Can we get real information sometimes? We stress alot, only reason they say we have a good system is because people treat other the same way and schools are free, no need to pay for school lunches and they get high education. If our school system is different it doesnt mean our life is full of happiness and joy. Life doesnt work that way. If someone thinks in making this up, go ahead complain but i can promise you you will meet alot of finnish people who agree with me. Internet talks about all the happiness they have and that isnt too big. People have to talk about the problems more and not hide them and make it look like we have it all perfect. Because such a change is expensive and difficult to implement. Their general educational success comes from the focused, engaged environment that has become in-school norms. If you look at your school, your learning environment, how easy do you think it would be to set that standard of behaviour and learning so that it is still economical and doesn’t take an absurd amount of resources and time. Myself, from a country with a good education system and a good school, can’t fathom such a change. It’s exactly like prison systems in most Scandinavian countries. High security US prisons would never be able to or find it extremely difficult to implement such a system. The overall prison culture, whether that be inmate or administrative, is not open to much change and changes that can be made are costly and often have uninspiring, unsubstantial improvements to re-incarceration rates.

@@RoopeKoivuluoma maybe to put things in a different perspective; A) 4 times a year we had a 2 week test period, with 2-3 tests per day at least, and then there were in-between tests as well. In one year it would be well over 100 tests B) homework time needed per class, per day was about 30 minutes, not including group assignments, essays and book reviews. That's a minimum of 3 hours of homework per day, if you don't dilly-dally. C) we had whatever time you needed to go from classroom to classroom, there was a 30 minute break on a 6 hour schoolday, 45 in total on an 8 hour schoolday. Finland? Attendance wasn't mandatory (our mentor/guide literally said 'of course! It is up to you, do you want to learn and pass, or do other things and fail.' Barely any homework Awesome teachers who know their subject, and teach it in a way you understand ( it was neither teacher nor student's mothertongue) There were a few tests, but in general, the teacher knew your understanding of the subject from what had happened in class. We had 5-15 minutes in between class too, unless we had to go to a different campus. There was a 45 minute lunch break, with... free food, like... wholesome, healthy hot meals. Over here, if you want to eat, you best bring it yourself, or pay WAY too much for a crappy sandwich or deep-fried snack. Oh, sorry, nearly forgot the vending machine 😂

You do get homework usually but its optional. Also I didn't know some schools make u wear uniforms until i saw about it on internet.. idk how common it is but in finland u can even go to school in pajama if u feel like it. Students' well being is usually the teachers most important value but the older angry teachers don't always think so. Also the food/lunch is free for students. U can choose in upper secoundary school from so many different courses of what you want to take. There is even a course for hiking in my school and a lot of other interesting things! My school also has a piano anyone is allowed to play in the lobby and we have a classroom deticated just for if you want to take a nap or study there. Im from Finland and this is mostly accurate, but it also depends a lot of the town/city. Usually smaller towns dont necessarily give as good education than bigger ones do, but generally it’s pretty good. About the recess, usually elementary gets, like he said, ~the 75mins of recess per day and middle school usually doesn’t get as much. The length of the day depends on the day, so every day is a different length, and homework usually depends on the teacher, but usually there is an option to do it in class. Also there is no dress codes or uniforms so you can wear whatever you want And Idk about any private schools, or at least any they would have an uniform, so almost all the schools are public and the lunch is always free. There is so much more to the Finnish school system. A lot of it stems from the teachers being EXTREMELY qualified and valued (compensation and respect). It is such a desired profession that even the training to be a teacher is extremely competitive. Better teachers, less stress for students, truly a winning situation.

Yeah, there is so much more to the U.S. school system sucking as well. Chiefly, that we have roughly 327 million more people. The STATE I live in has more kids in school than Finland has people. Being born in the Scandinavian countries is a blessing, free healthcare and free education. Taxes are a lot higher, but it works out when you don’t have to pay a shit ton of money on not dying Edit: so everyone has been saying the exact same thing “it isn’t free”, let me explain why we call it free healthcare. Even if it’s payed by tax we still pay a lot less than, let’s say, Americans for better quality healthcare. And it’s supposed to help those who couldn’t pay for it otherwise. As a teacher in Finland, I must say our system is great compared with many other but it is not perfect. Actually it is quite far from it. We peeked early 2000s with PISA but it has been downhill from the days. Yes, we do some things great, but especially stress related mental illness is growing among children, inclusion in schools doesn't work as planned and we are almost always short on staff in schools. The list goes on and on. Yes, we do things great but world changes. One main reason for our success is culture that values education and schools. We are living in global world that slowly but surely globalize the way of thinking. Culture is changing towards the western and global trends. Is it all good, I doubt.

I know that not everyone is going to have a great time, but I do hope that a larger portion has at least a better education than I do.

Education is not a mystery. The main thing Finland got right and other countries don't is this, and in this order: 1. Give teachers the best university education to become highly valued educational experts in their field (schools compete for them). 2. Give the experts (teachers) the autonomy to decide what to do and how to do it. 3. Provide continuous professional development. Everything else stems from that. They will know what's best for their students.

The thing Finland does that is so great in particular is valuing their teachers. Teachers are very qualified, get good salaries, and are respected in their society as extremely important workers. The Finnish government does spend a lot more on education than the US though.

@@yottabye Oh man, it's even worse in Greece. In 2014 by a survey from the U.K. research and analysis institution Economist Intelligence Unit, we were ranked as THE WORST education system in the entirety of Europe, and for good reasons; awful school buildings with only the bare minimum facilities (only classes, bathrooms, teacher offices, and depending on the school, possibly a court for sports too), teachers who have been in the system for years to the point that some are not even interested into teaching anymore, the teacher salaries are god awful, textbooks are outdated for over a decade, and the whole system is based around remembering stuff you will forget sooner or later, tests, exams, homework, all that shit. Same, no one should read this but I'll write it down anyways, school is ruining my life without a doubt. I'm currently in 8th grade, we have total of 4 units of exams for all subjects, then 3 other tests and if you get less than 60% you start over again, lastly the final exam which is based on the entire book of every subjects, including guides and other sources aside from board books. from preparing everything to extra tutioning in school and separate tutioning outside school. Then a whole bunch of assignments and home works and if you dont submit one you get punished with more work. Because I suck at math I have a separated teacher to focus on it as well, he takes exams on math and then exams from other tuitions. I get total of 2 hours a day free in 24 hours (which I'm currently in as I'm writing), sleep 5 hours and rest is academy. I'm extremely dumb academically which is why I'm more held down from my actual talents, such as drawing, singing, writing, language learning, experience new things or things I'm passionate about in general. If I ever got to experience the real day of light in Finland then I'd rather accomplish that.
