Gabion Retaining Walls are INEXPENSIVE & SUPER COOL!
Hey everybody, Micah, the Outdoor Living Guy - here with another Tuesday Tip for you. This one is on Gabion Walls and why to put a Gabion Wall into your Outdoor Space. Well, there's a lot to it - we're gonna talk all about it in this video so enjoy.
Gabion Walls
First, they are inexpensive, they look cool, and they are not traditional as far as walls are concerned. You see different walls in different neighborhoods and some of them look pretty ugly and worse, they don't hold up long term and need to be replaced. The ones here, Gabion Walls are the best of both worlds.
They look nice, a little bit sleek, they're not the norm and they add a little bit of a contemporary look to your landscape. Sometimes, with a very traditional house and a very traditional landscape, adding a modern feel adds to the overall landscape aesthetic. They showcase the rest of the space while blending in.
Benefits of the Gabion Walls
The name Gabion is obtained from the Italian word for cage. It is usually a wire container filled with rocks or concrete. They can form structures used to stabilize against erosion or in the case of this landscape design, mirror and blend old quarry rock walls with new gabion rock walls.
Fun Bench in the Middle
A fun detail here in this gabion wall - a built in bench. This really cool bench adds interest and a destination. A reason to head outside, pick out a seat - watch the kids play in the lawn. We love this detail. There is another bench built into the old quarry rock wall up higher on the trail to the house.
We hope you can see this gabion wall video gives you the ability to add ‘wall space’ to your landscape design. So, our Tuesday Tip on Gabion Walls in Wire - highly recommends why you should consider them for your backyard enjoyment.
It’s a Wrap!
We love creating outdoor spaces and we would love to help you design your landscape. Complimentary Consultation? You got it! We are happy to answer questions or give advice. Have you seen the latest 2020 landscapes in our Portfolio? See the before and after photos in each one.

It would have helped to see more detail on how they are built and the strength factor. They work as a retaining wall. Explain that more.

Go online and look up the engineering behind gabion construction and placement. Unless you are building a tall retaining wall with gabions the engineering using them is very simple.

I need a long gabion wall (> 200 feet). My main worry is that a long stretch will look unappealing. The bench shown in the video is a good suggestion.

Aside from asthetics, what are the benefits of building this type of wall? can they be used for actual retention of soil if there's an erosion problem or is it just a light duty kind of solution?

gabion wall's lifespan depends on the type of wire used and the amount of salt spray it is exposed to. Something that is very coastal tends to rust out like any metal quicker. The further inland you go the longer they last but 100 years is the typical

looks are poor compared to dry wall and its life is as long as the wires that hold it ie. 20 or 30 years max. Dry walls last forever if built properly.

We agree but this worked for this property. The original owner had a rock quarry and during the depression to help his employees feed their families, he paid them to build the walls you see in this video. When we were asked to design the space, we used gabion walls to mimic the earlier walls for cohesion. Thank you for your comment!

It’s hideous and cheap looking taking away from the natural beauty of natural dry laid stone masonry. The cages will rust over time and the fact that the rocks are just pored into the cage shows it has no actual structural integrity the cage holds everything in place once the cage is compromised with will take about 10 years the structure will fail

Even worse, they used round river rock instead of something that would lock better together like angular rock, so once that steel rusts, they’ll tumble out like soccer balls!

Spend 20% more for stainless steel cages and they will last at least fifty years and look beautiful. Then using river rock to fill the gabion cages is not a concern. Large riprap is usually used to decrease the turbulence of water flowing through the gabion especially if you have a gabion mattress on slopes.
@tanyawales5445
@tanyawales5445 2 жыл бұрын
@@tjhughes7740 You line the back and under the base of the gabion cage with porous landscape fabric before filling it with rocks so water can flow through it but not soil. That prevents erosion and slows down the runoff speed of water during rain events. Putting a 3" compacted crushed rock base where the gabion cage will be placed also helps with drainage and stability. Large boulders or riprap weighs a lot (1.2 - 1.7 tons/cubic yard and a steel cage also adds stability. The force of gravity and internal friction provides stability to the filled gabion cage. Most gabion cages are 3' - 4' tall and do not require anchoring or piers. This is very old technoilogy 7,000 years old dating back to when the Egyptians made gabions using reed baskets filled with rock to prevent erosion and flash flooding.
