Here is a quick tutorial of how I build my own gabion walls from standard concrete remesh and galvanized wire. They are simple to build and can be filled with most types of large stones, rock, or concrete chunks. These are commonly available materials and often can be found free on craigslist. As always, thanks for watching:)

I've used concrete mesh for projects, you can leave on the tag end of the mesh when you cut it and then bend it around the piece to be connected. Get a piece of small pipe to make the bend and you can avoid the wire failing.

I'm burying a shipping container; and this Gabion will keep the sides from imploding during the back-filling. This Gabion will also minimize metal corroding over the years. Thank you for showing how to build my own Gabion Wall. With as much as I will need, buying the Gabion Baskets would be very costly.

Are these light wire fencing strong enough to hold the sort of stone you're talking about, holding back earth next to a shipping container? I'd see this as more a visual thing rather than structural.

@@thesanfranciscoseahorse473 Gabion walls stop cars, they've been used around mosques and temples for that reason. Not sure if that's the type of strength that relates to structure like that, but they're definitely not nothing

I have been racking my brain on what kind of fence to build for my front yard. This piqued my interest as I have loads of rocks all around here on the Navajo Nation. When I seen you filling the interior with broken pieces of concrete, I was sold! I have a pile of broken concrete that has been sitting in at the edge of my home site for almost a decade. I always thought, "How can I get rid of all this? Or how can I build something with it?" Talk about killing two birds with one stone. I will get on this soon. Thanks!

just a thought, build Gabion walls below your leader pipes with decorative stone on the exterior, line it with a tarp or some billboard cloth, then fill it with the same material used for bio-filters (sand, gravel and activated charcoal). then you could directly filter your water straight off the roof, and pipe it into your storage tanks..., filtered water with a beautiful touch.

Ha Ha. I love all the negative comments below. I live in Scottsdale, Arizona and these are all over. Have been for years. With our blistering heat (120 last June) to our crazy dust storms and torrential monsoon rains, these hold up great! They are galvanized! They will outlast me! And you really have to see them in person to appreciate their appeal. Totally goes with the Southwest environment. To be fair ( maybe because of the labor involved ) they are usually found in the high-end shopping centers and multi million dollar homes. You probably would be surprised at how many of your favorite athletes that live out here or have a second home here, have these on their property.

billder999 New Zealand has installed a lot of gabion retaining walls that are very attractive (particularly around Queenstown) - both functional and aesthetic with some amazing workmanship. The cross ties shown in the video need to be tight (twisting in the middle with pliers is of no use because.when the rock shifts, it will create pressure that will stretch the wire and you'll eventually end up with side panel bulges). Also, suggest you double twist wire at edges every 6-9"" for additional strength.

Nice job. When I use that kind of stiff mesh, I only cut one end of the edge piece and use the other as a tie to connect it to the next piece. Hard to bend but they stay put. I also thought about hog ties when you were using small pieces of wire to connect the two mesh pieces. When I saw you put a Z bend in the cross wire to stiffen it up, I concluded that you have fencing experience. Thanks.

I've seen these baskets used to control and direct rainwater runoff around roadworks, especially where the batters of the road are reasonably high. I got the impression that the advantage they have over lining spoon drains or vee drains with rocks is that the running water can't wash away the smaller material under the rocks and eventually wash out and erode the drain. Instead any silt and small material carried down with the water settles into and around the rocks in the baskets and locks it even more firmly together. The only real difference between the one you built and the ones I have seen was the mesh used, which was like very heavy duty galvanized chicken wire. It's a little labor intensive in the beginning but sure saves a lot of repair work further on down the track

Everyone asking about the useful life of the wire: Depends a bit on climate, dry climate being better for exposed metals than wet climate. Just to give an idea though, on my farm in KS, a much wetter climate than AZ but pretty dry still, I have seen wire fence that was balled up and thrown away into a ditch as erosion control. It gets covered in dirt and grass and stays wet a lot more than any wire in a gabion basket ever will, and that wire is going strong after 100 years. Corrugated sheet metal can last upwards of 80 years, and that's rusty thin stuff. I've dug up old culvert pipes that are still good after 80+ years underground with zero galvanization. Wire tends to last a really long time, even if buried and kept wet. I'd project the life of a gabion basket like this in AZ to be 500+ years easy. The wire isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

One thing I would like to point out though, as far as the wire is concerned. Don't use a single strand of wire. Cut a double length off, fold it in half, wrap the loop around a peg and twist the wire until it's a single piece, thus creating a stronger strand. M3RC

Part of my "county" road is actually privately maintained. One of its shoulders is quite steep. My neighbors and I had been trucking in SB2, or road base, to keep replacing that which was washing down into the ravine. SB2 is a mix of limestone, from about 2" in diameter to fines that can be dust-like. Since this part of the road was never engineered for proper drainage, the runoff rain goes across the road, diagonally, until it reaches a low spot that feeds into a ravine, instead of parallel to the road in a culvert. This diagonal runoff eventually erodes a ditch in the middle of the road which takes the shoulder with it as it finds its way to the ravine. I used a store bought gabion as bulwark against this shoulder erosion and it has worked very well. But they only come in increments of cubic yards, 3' X 3' X 3'. I need more irregular sizes for my particular situation, so homesteadonomics idea should work well for me. The only thing I will do differently is to ad some landscaping cloth on the bottom and the three sides that do not face the road. This can be propped up by the rocks as they rise in the gabion. This cloth will trap the fines and smaller rocks entering on the side that faces the road so that, eventually, the gabion will become a virtual solid block that still lets water flow through it. This will greatly decrease the amount of SB2 that is entering the ravine and cut our replacement costs. SB2 is great stuff if a road is engineered for proper drainage. After it packs down by gravity and traverse, it is almost like concrete.

So I did a little research on these Gabion Walls and found they've been used for many years and are the inspiration for the military's Hesco Barriers; difference is they have a cloth bag inside and are filled w/dirt n sand from nearby. Hesco barriers will stop small arms all the way up to speeding cars n trucks. If you live where it's not so "brown" all year (ie: like in the desert) pack good soil around the rocks and sprinkle w/grass seed, then water and watch the grass grow. Now you have barrier like the Hedge Rows in France which could be better looking than rocks.

that would look great! if I lived in an area with more rain, then I'd definitely love to try something like that:)

You have some good ideas here, Joe. I've been toying with the idea of replacing a failed wood retaining wall with a gabion retaining wall, but the local building supply places can't spell "gabion" and have never heard of it, so getting suitable wire mesh is a problem, although they all seem to carry 4 x 4 inch concrete reinforcing mesh. For a stronger gabion box, I'd consider cutting the second piece of mesh OVERSIZE by one square on two edges, trimming off the edge wires, then wrapping or welding the protruding stubs to the edge wires of the outer panels, diagonally offset by half a square as you've done. That way, there wouldn't be unsupported corners as there are in your implementation, and less problem with stones falling out or extruding at the box edges. The overall cost increase for a project would be minimal. I think only the side panels would need to be doubled, while the tops, bottoms and ends could be left as single-ply, especially where ends abut another gabion box. Your suggestion of using concrete rubble in the middle of the basket, where it can't be seen, is a great idea, as used concrete is difficult to get rid of - most garbage pickup services prohibit putting it into one's waste cart - and there's a good chance one can get it from someone for free, with blessings.

***** Thanks for the great ideas Milosz! I'm going to have to use some of your suggestions for the next one:) I actually have a buddy that is doing this for a small retaining wall as well.... hopefully he'll be okay with me taking some video of it as another example of a gabion use. Probably the standard wall but with landscape cloth on the soil side of the wall. And I may end up doing a small retaining wall out of it as well... after the wife lets me play with a mini excavator for a weekend!!! Anyways, thanks for watching and the great suggestions! Joe

I was just wondering how long the concrete wire mesh will last when it's exposed to the weather. It seems to be well on the way to being a pile of rust when you purchase it at the big box stores. I think something that's galvanized would be a better choice of material that's going to be exposed to the weather. (It does work well for tomato cages though, if you don't mind getting rust on your clothes, hands and arms while tending to and picking the tomatoes.)

Brilliant - this is a cool idea. It's a lot of good protection for your property, but I have to think that the metal wire is pretty expensive.
