Come visit us here in Texas USA, it's only 42 here today Celcius. I think you can get that little digger to dig that no problem. Just be smart about it. You may have to make it so you can drive it down in the hole your digging and drive out when done to go that depth. If you run into huge rocks It may not do it.

It’ll do it! I just dug a hole for pretty much the same size tank (septic tank) with my same size mini digger/excavator. It’s how I came across your videos, looking into these mini excavators. Took a lot longer to do than I thought it would. Took a month working weekends and evenings. Had to dig a meter deep hole and then drive down into hole and dig the other meter deep. We have sticky clay here! Every scoop I would have to hop off the machine and shovel/pry out the clay from the bucket. It makes for a huge pile of dirt!! Much more so than the hole it came out of! So tired of digging 😞

Hi Ian and Julie. There are many small steps needed to do a project. I'm not sure how your ground is. Maybe if you dug a few sample holes. If it's not to rocky or has a lot of clay I'm sure your mini digger should do the job. Just be safe my friends.

Well done, keep on going. A very simplistic thought, using your digger, dig a small trench wide enough for it to fit, then dig your required depth, although you may probably need to move earth twice before refilling your access / re hire larger digger to expediate time constraints. Keep the blog going, many thanks.

Just remember you need to step back the sides for safety as you go down, usually about 1:1 (half metre down, half metre back).........oh, and don't pile the spoil too close to the edge of the hole. Most of the spoil isn't going back in the hole, so get rid of it as your digging. A little dumper would be handy.

@@HomesteadingUncontained each country has its laws. Guess it is good that at least you are aware of them. So, pay up for a professional to come and do it or you plow on with the mini digger. You are good at it now, hope it works out for you two.

I've got the same size Chigger and its max digging depth is 1.55m, or about 1.60m with a quick hitch fitted. If you were digging a hole in flat ground you wouldn't be able to dig deep enough to bury your tank. Since you're on sloping ground you stand a chance of getting enough depth by digging in from the low side. The hardest thing with burying a water tank is ballasting it with enough water to stop it popping up and floating when you pour the concrete. When a friend installed a large tank he filled 6 IBCs with water and very quickly emptied them into the water tank as the concrete was poured around it. I'm looking forward to the next stage 👍 Also, Julie. You did a great job in getting rid of that red mite in your coop. Did you add some Diatomaceous Earth to your girl's dust bath and a little bit in their feed?

I think your digger will do it, it will just take longer, with the increased risk of rain collapsing the hole. And because I care about you, I'll just say never go into an unsupported hole that's higher than your waist. Soil is heavy.

I had a horse Farm and and thought of going off grid but not totally off grid and bought a piece of land a year later I found out I had cancer at 61 so you never know what going to happen the next day so I had to forget about going off grid.and I had no symptoms that I had colon cancer until I had a screening then I’m cancer free but the chemotherapy messed up my whole body so now my legs and feet are all numb and I don’t have much energy so my point is you never know what’s gonna happen to your health from day to day. I feel like I got rob of my retirement years.

What was your reason for going off the grid, and going off grid is great if your young and healthy but if any thing happens to your health your in trouble. That’s something I would do if I was in my 20. But at 63 no way I could do it.

For us going off grid means not connected to main services - so we will still have a normal house and lifestyle (other than growing and raising as much food as we can). As long as we can keep our energy bills to zero, we will have succeeded😀

Hi Ian an Julie I have 25 acres in Highlands of Scotland and when I was installing my huge water collection tanks I have a mini digger a bit bigger than your but what I did was I hired a 15 ton digger from a plant hire for the week it wasn't to expensive and it did the job in less than a day as it had the weight an power as the soil was very hard compacted it would have taken me days to try with mini digger and remember you could come across boulders that mini digger can't handle. Also remember when in doing groud for your work shop garage you got a French guy with a big digger and he dug out your area in a few hours . Trust me Ian get big digger or get a local farmer that has a jcb. Being Ex navel militery must have been driving you nuts everything everywhere before you tidied up with shelfing as I know my self being ex RAF I like order and everything in its place. Ian get bigger digger it will save on time energy and be efficient especially if you have big boulders good luck

Rocks.....a pain to dig out?? hard on machines....heavy work by hand......But look at it from my point of view.....I like gabions.....especially because they are good homes for snakes and lizards..Now here....they are not financially viable...unless you are very well off. (Concrete walls - even with a lot of re-bar is cheaper....wood for 'shuttering' is dirt cheap here (can be used over and over and then burned in the central heating, so not wasted. Weather?? same here in eastern Poland high 20's C outside.
