Peter finishes raising the purlins and the gable ends, continuing to use a ramp and ropes to raise the logs. He then notches the purlins and installs the rafter, leaving space for the chimney.

I suspect, if you looked closely at the cabin built in the 1840s which you mentioned, you'd find shims between the log rafters and the sawn boards secured to their tops. The technique is still used sometimes today with warped or misshaped trusses to flatten and even out a roof surface which, as you said, would relieve stress on the sheathing or strapping as the case may be. Cabin's looking great! I'm impressed with your working through the winter like this. Good job.

Just found your channel, it's amazing! Just subscribed. I'm doing something similar on my channel, building a log cabin with only hand tools, although I have some more modern tools. I'm in the early stages of harvesting logs. I'm learning a lot from your channel and will definitely be incorporating a lot of the things I've learned here into my build. Keep it up! Also where you located? The accent leaves me to believe southern Ontario. I'm nearby in Quebec

Glass would have been rare and expensive of the frontier and more common in communities. I’m taking a few liberties to make it a usable cabin when completed.
@shawno3681
@shawno3681 3 жыл бұрын
How seasoned are those logs? If they are still green, then do you have to plan for them to shrink and thus the cabin to settle? And if you have glass windows, would that create pressure on them? (I do see the window boxes, so maybe that protects windows).

Sink is reckoned at about 3cm a meter for (fresh)pine and spruce on full line-scribed houses. Maybe Cedar is dissimilar. The door frame will hold up the gable wall when the corners sink down.
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape 3 жыл бұрын
The logs are green as grass, but cedar doesn’t shrink quite as much as other woods. I have allowed a gap over window and door frames for shrinkage.

@@TheWoodlandEscape I figured it was around that size. It's very nice. I sure love the fireplace too. For years I've wanted to build one for myself with a Rumford fireplace. I just my house this week. I am planning to move back home and find a piece of land, with the little money I'm making off the sale, and build one. I don't like to work in the winter. If I live in a cabin with no bills to pay, I should be able to only work in the summer. I'm in NB. A few years ago the northern part of Ontario had land going for quite cheap where they were no roads but now it's kinda expensive. I wouldn't mind going to BC but again the prices are expensive. So back home it will be.

I found these videos and started sharing them in my garden/homesteading group but the farther I got in them the more I wish I had not started sharing because you spend far too little time showing, explaining, how, what and why you are doing certain things. Nobody could follow these videos and erect their own cabin. Yes someone with carpentry skills could figure out a way to solve such and such a problem but for example you did not really show here how you actually put up the rafters one scene there were none then then next shot nearly everyone was in place just like when you put the logs above the windows and door. you briefly tried to explain but then there is not one video showing the result until you finished. You did not show one single example of putting the logs between the door and windows I am assuming you drilled and pegged but you told nobody just showed it finished, You did not show how you notched the logs, you spent more time showing you going from one side to the other moving your ladder. Very disappointed in the quality of these videos for helping the novice to erect their own cabin

Thanks for your feedback Charles. I am far from an instructor, simply attempting to show life in the 18th century. I will make an effort to show more detail, but this is not intended to be a how to series.
