Peter hangs his 18'th century reproduction tavern sign. He stealthily approaches a sandhill crane with her youngster. He introduces Luke Solms, the stone mason building the rumford chimney and firebox. Luke finishes the hearth and he and Peter discuss the bear hunt.
We see the breeding of the toads in the pond and the continuation of the hide tanning process. The hides have dried into rawhide. He mixes up deer brains to form the tanning solution, mushing the brains into warm water. He immerses the stiff rawhide in the solution working the hide until it has absorbed the solution and is soft and pliable. As he works the hide, he gives a wee bit of history on trade silver and touches on the competition between the Hudson Bay Company and the Northwest Trading Company. He discusses the labour intensive process of softening and stretching the hide. He demonstrates how to ring out the hides to remove as much moisture as possible before beginning the softening process.
