Great commentary about a like minded master. Agree with everything you said. And your work is truly within the Levitin sensibility Andy. Elevating the ordinary.

Wow. Andy, Thank you for introducing me to Levitans work! The ways he finds to amplify and explore the abstract visual aspects of the scene and his sense of composition and really his love for the subject guiding his process ..so it seems. Reminds me of jazz musicians (the great ones) who are not hiding behind a lot of notes but appreciate both the immediacy of the moment and the greater arc of the song ..whatever it would translate into visually..unity, simplicity, the power of tone relationships...

Dear Andy, Dear Andy, You've made my day! As a Russian who studied Russian art, I deeply admire artists like Levitan, Repin, and Serov. It's rare to hear such appreciation for Levitan in the West, so your kind words truly mean a lot. Great lecture!

Wonderful artist. I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of him. Well narrated by Andy. He really had terrific observational skills of his beloved Russia. Pity he left us too soon.

I love Levitan and I had never hear of him until 1985, when an uncle of mine who lived in Germany gave me a Russian book about him. He is really underestimated among the impressionists. Most of his works you present here are unknown to me. Thanks!

In Russia, by the way, Levitan is one of the most famous artists. Especially, thanks to the school course of Russian language, where there is a section on writing essays on the theme of nature and paintings of Russian artists are used as illustrations. Thus, his works "Golden Autumn", "Evening Bells" and others are familiar even to children.

He was a great artist and died way too young! An interesting thing I have noticed about his art and Tom Thomson is, they both have this way of painting that makes you feel you are not just looking at a painted scene, but looking at it through their eyes - like you are actually there. And, they both painted very ordinary things. Interestingly, the both died at 39 years old.
