This was my first time sparring with Phil Engeroff. He's a pro muay thai fighter with lots of ring experience in Thailand. It's great moving with someone new who doesn't have an ego and can challenge me without sparring to create damage.
Find good sparring partners. They make all the difference.

Great video. What the average Joe doesn't understand is that you guys make it look so easy with the good form etc., but it take years to get to that point. Even being able to maintain an upright position for extended time while remaining near the pocket is SO hard! Very nice and thank you for sharing. Gives me a goal...

Such a high standard of sparring. A high technical level, moderate intensity, and high volume. This is exactly how you spar without serious injury or brain damage risks whilst still actually improving your fight skills in a practical way.

great, heres the thing though.. You talked about the russians sparring too hard... if you have someone like that, what do you do? Do you tell them to chill out? do you try to match them and fall in to their trap? Or do you just say, ok thats enough, spar with someone else!

Great stuff. Strong teeps. Excellent sparring partner. One way to force more head or just body movement might be to target the back leg. The close-in Dutch shell is great with the big gloves but... Plus in and out jabs with the smaller gloves do a lot of work.

Hi Gabriel. In regards to the first sweep. How did you execute the timing so well? Was the kick telegraphed to you? Do you preemptively throw your own kick with the goal of landing a low kick or getting the sweep? Or was it purely good reaction skills through drilling? Keep the great content coming. thank you

I need a sparring partner like this. I was sparring at the gym I go to and one of the guys rocked me kind of good with a hook to the head. Had to take a sec to recover. I'm a 41 year old beginner and he's a late teen who also does Jiu Jitsu. Yeahhhhhh. 😫 The last few weeks have been a bit brutal because there are two people training for a competition.

What I found that works is to constantly try to get to the outside of your opponent's lead leg, that will put your opponent in an awkward position to hit you. If you're on your opponent's outside, and he's on your inside you are in a much more advantageous position, both for defense and offense.

Head gear doesn't reduce brain trauma. The studies are conclusive on that. They protect from bumps and bruises but the head still gets jarred the same. That's why headgear is out of the Olympics. Plus you get hit more with a headgear on. I may spar some karate guys. I'll have to see.
