The Libyan leader paraded on the world stage with a style so unique and unpredictable that the words "maverick" or "eccentric" scarcely did him justice. His rule saw him go from revolutionary hero to international pariah, to valued strategic partner and back to pariah again.

I'm not a fan of any dictator but colonel Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein etc are needed in countries that are fractured by tribal or religious differences amongst the population. I know they can be extremely tough on the few in their respective countries but I genuinely believe it's for the greater good of the many. I'm from a democratic country myself but America and Europe have yet to learn that one size does not fit all for some parts of the world. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nope. Look at Tunisia as an example or even places such as Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Democracy is possible, it's just that the people in charge of their own nations find it easier to divide and consolidate their power under delusional rhetorics and motives out of laziness and greed, which is a human compulsion that requires sound mind and discipline to defeat and conquer over as an individual. Gaddafi and Hussein were sociopaths who claimed that they were exercising "order and stability" to rationalise their brutality. Gaddafi in particular was known for cowardly shifting the blame onto NATO to cover up and compensate for his own pathetic behaviour.

Hi there! I have a request/some constructive criticism for this channel: would it be possible for you to write out your captions instead of relying on the auto-generated captions? I'm hard of hearing (gradually losing more hearing with time) and I now rely completely on captions. I couldn't hear it but I'm guessing the narrator has a thick accent of some kind because the auto-generated captions don't make much sense. The captions go off of what they "hear", so when the narrator pronounces a word or name in a way that makes it sound like a completely different word or name, it throws the captions way off and sometimes entire sentences come out reading like jumbled up nonsense. lol I had to keep stopping the video every several seconds to refer to Wikipedia/other sources in order to figure out if the narrator had actually said what it *looked like* they said, or to look up what the names of people/places/etc. actually were (because I couldn't trust the way that the auto-generated captions had spelled them). I was only able to make it through the first 12 minutes before giving up in frustration. So while you might have some really good content on your channel, I (and many, *many* other people out there who are deaf or hard of hearing) won't get to enjoy it because it isn't accessible (at least not in its current form).

It is on US Special Forces manuals, one way to take a regime down is the "Traditional Strategy" where they explore ethinic, linguistic and other kinds of differences to divide a nation and manipulate the selected group of people to organize and assault the targeted govenment in multiple ways on a long term operation, both pragmatic and direct. Want to say that I love the channel-- nice to have a balanced African history channel and this video lays it out.... he like so many things was not a black & white entity but a mix. He did many good things for the Libyan nation undeniably and for a while the quality of life there was significantly better for the average person. Additionally Western minds don't get it a lot of the time but the actual individual cultures and issues of some nations require strong man politics to reign in chaos and Libya is far worse off post Western intervention. Gaddafi was an opportunist and a sociopath who had no allies in his own mind. The people who bonded with them were never really bonds, but stepping stones for his own perception of his personal reputation and public persona. His image changed because of his evident narcissism. Gaddafi,was a very rare figure in world history. A military figure who staged a coup,not to usher in a right wing government,but a progressive one. At first,he was about liberating his people from past colonial rule and becoming a leader of a movement to do the same throughout the world. He attempted to bring in the economic anti exploitation policies of the Islamic world,such as no charging interest for borrowing money,etc while at the same time bringing in the freedoms socially such as the rights of worman from the capitalist West. That's a very hard thing to do. Further made difficult,by due to the world geopolitics needing to survive,to at first ally with the Soviet Union hostile for the most part to any religion. As the years went by he outlined a new world vision to live by called the green book. Basically putting people in small groups in power instead of a central focus of all powerful authority. Due to his early policies and oil revenue thereafter,he was able to bring great prosperity and freedoms to his people. And was on the verge,as North Korea became,a nuclear power that would have ensured his regimes probably unlimited survival. But,as the years went by with absolute power,as it always does,even in the best intentioned it warped his thinking. Almost no criticism of the regime was allowed. And he such as the airplane bombing,began to kill innocent people,even children,in pursuit of his vision,of how the world should be. Which is always the begining of the end. Also due to the failures of the Soviet System,he began to reject them,and looked to instead move to the west. He felt,he had advanced enough with his policies in his country and the world situation had changed so much,no more actual physical colonialism,that he could accomplish this. Oil being lower at that time,western sanctions had began to cripple his nation and with the Soviet pipeline now ended and after 1991 for good,he worked out an arrangement with the west. Give up his almost successful nuclear program and let in western trade,oil production and lower prices for western nations, etc again,and the sanctions and his isolation from the western world economy would end. And in case he needed a sanctuary in the end,it would be offered to him,or it was assumed by him. But once his nuclear program was dismantled,he was living on borrowed time. His overall program could never allow for full western reintegration into Libya,to exploit it's resources both in minerals,oil and people. And his refusal to stop his suppression of his people politically, and increasing isolation from his people,due to his aging,etc,eventually made all it took was a spark to bring him down. His fatal mistake,was believing those in the western world,he had gotten promises from,would uphold their word to him. When a few radical militants,some from radical islamic groups,some from wishing a conventional capitalist system,some wanting true freedom to speak their minds to go ong with economic prosperity,rebelled,the west instead of bailing out Gaddafi,both supported his enemies and tightened the screws once more on him. So economically the nation went into a tailspin. And politically and militarily it went into a full fledged civil war. In the end they saw more future value with him gone,then still in power and didn't even care enough,no future geopolitical reasons,or so they thought,to even gauranty his safety. Totally blind by now to his people,thinking he was still loved by them,aged and a broken man,he was basically dug up from a sewer beaten to a living pulp,paraded around spit at humiliated and then finally done away with. But his downfall the way it happened did have fatal geopolitical consequences,because it showed a leader like in North Korea,the only way to ensure survival,no matter what promises are made,is to have nuclear weapons,and be able to use them. Thus endangering all of humanity,for no one knows how many more years,perhaps forever. Libya in turn with the fall of Gaddafi,did not become stronger or more free. But simply turn apart with parts falling into fanatical Islamic control,worman losing their hard fought rights,the nations resources on again being excited by outside powers for a few local warlords benefit and death and destruction,to the average person. Truly sad. And a lesson a vital one for all of us wishing to change the world for the better.

Africa is a resource rich continent but it is within western interest to keep Africa poor, divided and unstable to get those resources as cheaply as possible, if you have a stable government in control of the entire country you have to deal with them to get access to any of their resources in the country and follow environmental laws etc but if you can deal with a few warlords cheaper in the resource rich zones then you can strip a country for 1000s of pounds as opposed to millions.

Not true ! A very important point is ignored - Gaddafi wanted to introduce a gold-backed African currency to protect Libya against dollar inflation. That leads to war with the US every time. It's no surprise that BRICS are going to do the same - hence war with Russia and later China.
