Car falls into manhole - EDSA

While on the way to their operation area, the MMDA team of Bong Nebrija came across a car that was stuck in a manhole.
They worked quickly to free the vehicle and clear the road.
According to one of the passengers, no one was injured.
As shown in the video, a barrier was temporarily placed over the manhole, but was later replaced by a temporary steel plate.
Since this video was shot, the steel plate has already been removed and the manhole has been covered.

The driver of the vehicle should sue the government for any damages/injuries he/she got from the accident. This was fortunate because the traffic was slow moving but imagine if that man hole cover gave way if the vehicles were running faster, it might have cause a multi vehicle crash and would had been fatal. There should be someone to take responsibilty for this incident.

laws and penalties should be changed so people would not want to use the bus lane. if you get in an accident and get hit by a bus while on the bus lane, the MC/car should pay for injuries caused by the accident and/or damages done to the bus.

It's called "Duty of Care". This ruling is not heard of much in the Philippines. The insurance pays the owner of the car and in turn the insurance sues the Government.

Although if you check the facebook page of the MMDA, you can see that they often post about requests they've made to the DPWH, along with ongoing and completed roadworks of the DPWH. There was a similar incident on EDSA before, but it involved a manhole cover owned by a telco. From what I remember, it was the telco that took responsibility. Based on old photos I was able to find, I don't think this manhole cover is owned by a telco.

Or they can also ramp up the fines to correspond to the owners/driver's income or the cost of the vehicle whichever is higher. So the more expensive your vehicle is the higher your fine will be. Cause let's face it, you're driving a 3 million vehicle, what's a 5thousand fine to you? But if thT fine is 3% of the value of the vehicle, then unless you love shelling out Php90,000 daily, I'm sure you'll avoid the bus lane like a plague. Hear that LTO and LTFRB?

Aside from heavier penalties, they should consider padding the base penalty cost depending on the vehicle cost(?). Finland does impose higher penalty amount depending on one's income.

Why they don’t implement camera system captures the whole bus lane for any violators and gets fined upon their renewal? Instead deploying dozens of enforcers which can cause more traffic? In Dubai and Singapore you rarely see any enforcers or police. You just got notified via sms regarding your violation and fines.

Reminds me of the time you fell in a hole this past decade, 1 time during a road clearing near a tree and 1 along side the beach cleaning in 2019.

lol good memory. Falling into the sewer at the beach was definitely the worst. I wasn't able to walk for like a week, but the x-ray was pretty much clear. Unfortunately the deep cut on my shin got infected. I guess that's why it was so painful. I still have a big scar and indentation there. That's part of the reason why I started carrying a first-aid kit, back when Bong was assigned to EDSA. I really learned my lesson about how important it is to clean wounds. I kept seeing riders that had minor accidents - mostly with cuts on their feet, knees, elbows and hands. So I wanted to be able to at least try and help them avoid an infection which could cost them a lot more in the long run, maybe even forcing them to skip work.

There are smartphones with optical zoom, like the Sony Xperia 1 V. Those plastic barriers were only there for a very brief time, while waiting for the TEC guys to come and put down a metal plate (shown at the end of the video). But even that metal plate was swapped out for a more permanent repair (pinned comment). Even.if many manholes are privately owned, maybe it's better if the DPWH inspect all of them and then force the utility companies to ensure they're well maintained.

In all my years of life I have never seen a manhole lid failure! I surely hope the company/city responsible for that section of road are made to pay for any damages or alignment. And then to use a flimsy plastic barrier...geesh, some of the things I see living in this country!

The plastic barrier is only temporary while waiting for the right department to come and cover it properly. That's what you saw at the end of the video, when they arrived to install the steel plate. But since this video was shot, the steel plate was already removed and the manhole was covered.

I dont blame the riders on the bus lane. This road-or traffic in general- is a nightmare all the time. From what I’ve seen/witnessed, it’s not certain time of the day, it’s all-the-time, a systematic issue. How can one do anything unless he/she leaves hours prior to just to make time? Additionally, my driver told me 3000 pesos fine for violation and that’s it(he said he has multiple violation so im sure it’s less). There are no license point deduction or any type of further consequences. With penalties like that, no wonder people don’t follow the law. I kid you not, we experienced a CRAZY traffic driving a road by an affluent neighborhood (according to my driver). After 2 hours in traffic to drive a mile, we finally realized what was happening. A gate SECURITY person for the said affluent neighborhood was STOPPING the whole traffic so that the cars from his neighborhood can come and go as they please. I was blowing a gasket, but I was told this was normal. If anyone in an uniform can control traffic without any contest from drivers, no wonder the roads are jammed all throughout the day. Shame.

The new penalties that are coming into effect will actually result in suspension of license and then revocation of license, for repeat violators. And instead of being P1000 for the first apprehension, it's going up to P5000. As for EDSA, the daily volume of vehicles is around 420,000 - far beyond what it was designed to handle. So yes, during rush hour you're really going to experience congestion, and you do have to allow for extra time, or leave much earlier. They do take steps to try and decongest the highway, by manning the splits, pulling the traffic, clearing the alliterative routes etc etc. But one of the most effect ways to reduce the volume of vehicles on the road, is to improve public transport - with projects like the EDSA busway. Those buses can move hundreds of thousands of commuters, while only occupying a single lane. Not only that, but they're being moved faster than ever before. As public transport continues to improve, less people will be reliant on their own vehicles, and congestion will be reduced further.

according to google: "You'd have to rotate the cover exactly the right way. Therefore, many manhole covers are round so they don't need to be rotated. There are no corners to deal with. Also, a round manhole cover won't fall into a hole because it was rotated the wrong way, so it's safer."

I don't get these people who kept on repeating the violations. LTO have demerit points system. The more violation you have the more the demerit points you take. And the more demerit points you have it will be harder for you to renew your license.
