Thank you, R! One of the downsides of beautiful pens like these is that my fear of damaging them in some way prevents me from getting as much use as I would a "normal" pen. 😀

@gadgetstop321 Do you have what call a "beater" pen? I have one. It's not an expensive pen and is a daily driver. Yet, it's a good everyday user.

I started collecting fountain pens just about five weeks ago, and so I’m catching up with what everyone has to say. This is addictive! I’ve already purchased several-most not anything terribly expensive. Even though I’m brand new at this, I was happy to see I have two of the pens you have. My first pen was a Ritma in a broad nib, which I love. My latest pen is a Kaweco Sport, but I got it in bronze double broad, and it is BEAUTIFUL! The ink I got for it is Jacques Herbin Lie de The and it looks positively GOLDEN coming out of that pen. You have given me many ideas for future pens and, in the nearer future, lovely inks.

Welcome to the community of fountain pen enthusiasts, KJ! It sounds like you're off to a great start with your collection. The Ritma is such a fun pen. It was my first pen with a magnetic cap. And your Bronze Kaweco Sport sounds absolutely awesome!

You have chosen a wonderful collection on inks and pens. I’ve never had an issue with a Pilot Metropolitan, and when I read in the comments that yours developed a crack I thought that’s ok for a pen that’s going to school because it’s so affordable to repurchase. I do think I would trust the metal body more than a plastic one for that use, unless you would get a Schon indestructible pen!

Oh, and yes to what you were saying about the Pilot Medium pulling ink a bit! I feel that my opaque Medium Prera does that but I didn’t realize it until you started describing it so well, and suddenly I understood exactly what you meant! Sorry about the multiple comments - the video has gotten me mulling over my passionate love of notebooks and pens, I guess. Have a lovely evening, Cathy. (P.S. I know that you were thinking about Herbin’s Cacao du Brésil in another video and I can wholeheartedly encourage you to try it. I have it in a wet Medium writer and absolutely love it for drawing as well as for lettering small headers in my notebooks and planners. I haven’t used it for regular writing in a thinner nib so I can’t speak to its performance on that level, but it’s magical for creativity. I hope that helps in return for all the information you share with us.)

Oooh I was so excited to see this video come up! Our taste in nibs is different (F vs B) and I love seeing what gets other folks excited within their collections. Thank you so much for the mention! Your videos have inspired what I'm planning to do with ink this month! 😃

Thanks, Maria! You sound like my sister. She likes broad and stub nibs and gets a kick out of the fact that our tastes in nibs are completely opposite. And I agree with what you said about getting other people's perspectives about what they like, even if it's different from yours - you can still learn a lot. 😀

A beautiful stable of pens, that. Currently I am enamoured with my two flex pens. In actual reality, a flex pen and maybe a super stub pretty much cover my needs, so the ten pens I would replace are my Waterman 52V and my Pilot Parallel 6.0. I enjoy hearing your opinions and experiences. I hope you film a 10 pens you wouldn't replace video as well.

I don't own any flex pens, but I'm trying to work on my cursive handwriting, so maybe someday. Wow, a 6.0 Parallel! I consider my 1.5 stub too wide for anything except playing with ink. And, I am planning on making a video about the 10 pens I wouldn't replace. It turns out that one of the pens on this video might end up on that video as well. 😀

That's good to hear, Janice. I was beginning to question my own sanity! I've only had trouble with my Metropolitan one other time, and I chalked that up to the ink not being suited for it. This time had me perplexed because it had been writing beautifully all week. Now it's developed another problem - my section has begun leaking ink at one of the seams. I'm guessing that must have something to do with the drying out issue.

Getting a new fountain pen is a lot of fun, but in my opinion, it’s a whole lot funner to experience the journey of what ink goes best with that particular pen! My pilot E95S is one of my biggest surprises on how much I’ve loved it. It’s inked with Iroshizuki Ku-jaku. It’s what a fine SHOULD be in my opinion. 😊

Your selections have reinforced my “wish list” status of the Pilot E95s and surprised me with the unexpected addition the Visconti Mirage Mythos. My own repurchase list includes the Kaweco AL Sport in raw aluminum (I have several AL Sports, but this was my first pen of any kind in my fountain pen collection), Kaweco Liliput Brass Wave, Pilot Vanishing Point in blue carbonesque with gold stub nib, Pilot Decimo, Diplomat Aero Stripes, Lamy Studio in Aquamarine (swapped the chrome section for a black rubberized section), Majohn/Moonman A1 (VP knockoff), TWSBI Mini AL, and my Traveler’s Company Brass fountain pen.

I know what you mean, Paul. When they're writing, they're great. Yesterday I noticed that my Metropolitan was leaking ink from one of the seams in the section. I'm guessing that must have something to do with it drying out. The only other time I've had trouble with it not wanting to write was when I tried to use Herbin Bleu Plenitude. I've never had trouble with my Prera drying out, but it did write a little drier than I prefer when I tried to use Herbin Lierre Sauvage. I haven't really used as wide of a variety of inks in these pens as I have in those with gold nibs. Maybe they're more temperamental than I've given them credit for.

Had some issues with the Metro when I first got it, but after admittedly over-flexing the nib, up and down, I've had excellent results no matter what ink I use; even leaving it unused for over a week. That said, I've had terrible dry out from the TWSBI Eco, even after a couple mins of un-use (from what I've seen, most folks have a really good experience with the Eco), go figure. Thanks for the rundown, from a fellow fine-nib fan

You're welcome, Furious! The 2nd most expensive pen in my collection (a Bexley Sleeve Filler) has the same issue as your TWSBI Eco. I've worked on the nib myself, and it's better, but still dries out enough that it's not enjoyable to use. I guess even with TWSBI and Pilot's reputations for consistent performance, we'll still come across a dud occasionally. 😀

What pens would I not repurchase? I don't tend to purchase the same pen twice, even for a different nib. What about pens that I can't repurchase again because they not in production or the company is out of business? That being said my OMAS pens. I don't even know if I want to pass them down. I want to take them with me. My ghost can write with them. As soon as I learn how to pick them up and use them like Patricky Swayze in 'Ghost'

Thanks for the great information and descriptions; I also enjoyed being introduced to some new inks! I’m eyeing both the Pilot Custom 74 and the Platinum 3775 as my first gold nib pen with the aim of it becoming ‘the’ precious writer, but I haven’t decided on which one to get yet and I see both made your list so that’s not much help. 😂 I did just so happen to find a place to try the 3775 yesterday (only in Medium, though) and it was divine so I’m now leaning towards that one (especially given that stunning nib). It’s also funny that another pen I really wanted to get, the Ambition, made your list, too. I fell in love with the White Sand version a few months back but have since stopped thinking about it after reading some reviews saying the cap comes loose and wobbles after a time. May I ask how long you have had yours and if it gives you any issue? Watching this video makes me wish I had the 3776 in my hands right now.

But if I were forced to narrow it down to just ten pens, the ones that instantly spring to mind are the following: Aurora 88, Aurora Optima, Aurora Internazionale, Aurora Hastil, Aurora Talentum, Sailor King of Pens, Pilot Justus 95, Montegrappa Miya 450, Visconti Divina Elegance, Stipula Etruria Alter Ego.

I do still use the 78G. The demonstrator version is my favorite. But I worry about the fragility of the plastic, so I use the Metropolitan when I feel like I need something a little more durable. However, I just discovered that my Metropolitan has a crack in one of the seams of the section and has started leaking ink. 🙃

I'm new to fountain pens so most of my collection are under $100. I have: - Pilot Prera (CM) (I hate this nib ngl it was so scratchy it tore up the paper so I had to do a lot of tuning on it which was annoying, should've bought it in a fine) - Pilot Petit1 (F) - Pilot Kakuno (EF) - Jinhao X750 (M) - Noodler's Charlie (F) (tbh I don't really use this pen, I got it for free and its just really not my favorite at all) -TWSBI Eco (B) - Pelikan m205 (F & B) (I have 2) - Sailor Compass (F) I also purchased another Pelikan m205 in EF and a Caran D'Ache 849 in F I believe that I haven't received yet that I'm excited to use. Out of the ones I have I find that I surprisingly so use my Kakuno, Jinhao and my TWSBI the most so I'd certainly replace those if they got lost or damaged and it wouldn't be expensive either since they're cheap pens. My Pelikan's are beautiful and are really nice (hence why I have 3) and I'd probably replace those too if I had to despite the price tag. I have a second TWSBI Eco on my wishlist in another nib size, and a Sailor 1911 with a gold nib, not sure exactly which one yet but once I have the funds I want a Sailor to be my first gold nib pen since I like the brand so far. Either them or possibly a Pilot since I find I like those a lot too. Anyways, nice video!

Thanks, Liv! It sounds like Pilot steel stub nibs are prone to issues. The CM nib that came on my Metropolitan was a little scratchy at first, but I was able to fix it with a few passes over some micro-mesh. However, my 78G with a B nib (it's a stub nib with no tipping) was dry and scratchy and even after tuning, it's not a good writer. I have one TWSBI - it's the special edition blue mini. It's a beautiful pen and it writes well, but the aluminum section is slightly slippery in my hand, so I haven't been using it lately. I probably need to try a mini with a plastic section or a 580 ALR. I'm curious to hear what you think about the Pelikan m205 EF. That is a pen that has always tempted me.
