When the paper clip fix doesn't work...
A short video on using the same technique I showed in the previous video (on the Pocket PC), to get an XBOX 360 controller battery to charge. It would not charge at all - even after trying the paper clip.

Thanks for the video. I could revive both my play & charge kits. Second kit took a bit longer to start charging, it was reading 0.9 V initially. I used my bench power supply set to 3 V and 300 mA current limit and gave it about 2 mins of charge until it was detected by the charger. It had to be well over 2 V to start charging for my kits.

Just experiencing this now 2020 after using my Xbox on and off for 3 years lol so bought a new battery but the new battery doing same things after 3 days of fighting with it. I changed the charge cable for a new non ms one and it appears to be charging now after a few attempts of plugging in in and out everytime it went green. (The battery is non ms as well but old one was ms battery) only thing I noticed now b4 my black Xbox controller used to continue to charge when I switched off the Xbox until full now it charges for maybe 5 minutes then switches off? But when I now switch Xbox back on its continuing to charge. As my 1st ms battery would usually take hours to fully charge when new.

+ve to +ve, -ve to -ve. Exactly the same with either batteries or a power supply. Just dont go above say a couple of volts and limit current if you can (maybe to 1A or less). If the battery gets hot - stop. These types of batteries can explode!

I ended up finding some old wires and taped them to the battery and then pressed them to the Xbox battery. It boosted the battery, but it still doesn't seem to be charging when I put it back in the controller and plug it in. But it's progress, it's been sitting for several years now, so it may not be revivable.

It's possible the charge circuit is faulty in the charge cable, or a fault in the controller, and finally - the battery might not be as new as it claims! Some old "new" batteries have discharged to a point they wont charge (without help), despite the fact it was sold as new.

Foe old lead acid batteries, you can also try to do a VERY brief reverse polarity 'shock' which helps break down the dendrites that form inside the battery. Give it a shock of 1-2 seconds 3-4 times and then do the same in the correct polarity. Like Gadget says take the needed safety precautions.

@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, no - put its probably the exact same kind of problem in that the batteries went too low and safety protection kicked in which stops the charger charging them... If you can work out which connection is the +ve and which is -ve, you could connect an AA battery up with -ve to -ve, +ve to +ve for a minute or so, then try charging it again. That may cause it to spring to life.

It could be the battery is dead, or the charge cable is faulty. It's also possible there's an issue with the controller. It's best to swap the cable with another to see if that makes a difference, and do the same with the battery pack and controller to work out where the issue is.

Hey mate =D You can just use a couple of AA batteries I guess, but maybe leave it connected for a few minutes once you are sure its not overheating. You could also get one of those cheap adjustable PSUs that have the different attachment fittings - normally they have a rotary switch to set 3v, 4.5v, 6v, 9v etc. Set it to 3v, and proceed cautiously!

I've an old netbook with a battery that suddenly won't take charge. It has multiple pins, like the controller battery you show; how does one determine the -'ve and +'ve terminals? Is it in spec sheets, or can it be found with a meter? Thanks. [Just remembered, a couple of Wii controller batteries are have the same problem.]
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 жыл бұрын
It should be easy in theory - what you do is remove the battery, put your meter on continuity - find a known ground point on the device (shielding is usually grounded - any connector with shielding will have a ground, eg. USB shielded edges). Test from that ground point on continuity to the battery terminals in the device - you will have a dead short somewhere there. Now you know which terminal is ground, on the battery, stick your -ve lead on that ground point on the battery, put the multimeter on the DC measurement setting and measure each of the other pins. If you're lucky one of them will have a low voltage, that's probably the +ve. But, to be sure, you could then so a similar thing on the netbook side. Power it up without battery - carefully measure the pins the same way you did the battery - the charge voltage will be on one pin there. Just be careful not to short anything out or you could blow a fuse, destroy the netbook or start a fire etc.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 жыл бұрын
And standard devices like Wii batteries and other laptop batteries may have a pin out if you search online. eg. batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_repair_a_laptop_battery
@MarkTheMorose
@MarkTheMorose 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I'm still alive! Handily, I have a second netbook of the same model, the battery for that still holds charge, and was a useful comparison. One pin on the (working) battery shows 10.42v, measured in the 20v range of the meter. On the dud battery, I had to put the range down to 200mv to show anything. Over in the netbook, one pin provides 2.57v, two pins provide 3.28, and one gives 0.32. The 0.32 corresponds to the pin in the (good) battery that shows a voltage. I note that this pin, and the ground, are slightly longer than the other pins.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 жыл бұрын
Ahha - yes, ground will typically have a longer pin and its feasible that the +ve does too.

So what is actually happening here? Is this down to a dead cell (no longer a continuous electron chain)? And is that battery lithium of NiMH or what? Presumably not Lead or Cadnium (as that wouldn't make sense). If it is a lithium and yet also electron chain problem, then that seems odd because you "shouldn't" have that happen in lithium. In cadnium yes, but not lithium. They can go dead, but it shouldn't be by that chemistry. What this leads me to assume (without actually bothering to RTFM
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 жыл бұрын
No idea on the cause and whether there's a problem with the chemistry or not. As far as I understand its more about the charge circuit - if there's too little or too much current drawn at the start it just fails to charge I think. It may even just be related to the voltage having dropped to very close to 0v - charger deems that unsafe to charge.
@DigitalMoonlight
@DigitalMoonlight 4 жыл бұрын
This is late but I thought I might as well reply. Inside are two ~2200 mAh NiMH AA batteries. Nothing custom, you can rebuild them with new NiMH AA batteries but it's a waste in my opinion since the charging circuitry is kinda crap. It's better to use a battery holder with regular rechargeables and recharge them on a charger with a separate channel per cell. My favourite to use is the eneloops kit, though bang for the buck IKEA charger with LADDA 2450s are great and cheap. I recommend the same setup for pretty much everything that can take AAs.
