The point where I was testing those vias - the first one that appeared be OK, wasn't - it only measured a short when the probe was pushed deep into the via. That's why you spot me retesting that same via (instead of the other one). There were in total 3 bad vias. I also forgot to cover the easy way to fix them:- Clean with vinegar, push a very small PCB drill bit through the hole to clean it out, then feed a piece of kynar through the hole and solder it on both sides of the PCB, cut off the excess and it looks just like a normal via. At the point I dealt with the clock issues - I forgot to mention the first thing I did was swap the crystal (you can tell if you look at the can - its a brand new crystal I fitted) - but that still made no difference. I am sure it was the trim cap being dirty from corrosion. Seen that same exact cause on two A500 RAM expansions recently.
@janhofmeier94275 жыл бұрын
The corrosion (or my cleaning) on my A2000 also killed the trimmer cap. It only measured short. Replacing it fixed the clock.

I've really enjoyed watching this and intend to go and find the earlier 2000 vid to watch as well. I got an A2000 earlier this year which I'd intended to fix up and try out but, as theses things go, it got set in a corner of my storage area while I tended to other matter. I stopped watching this vid as soon as I saw the varta battery part and immediately went and opened up my 2000 and cut off it's battery. Just in time too as it had just started to leak at one side. I wiped the area down with vinegar though it didn't look like it got to the actual board, scrubbed and cleaned it with IPA. Whew!! Then I watched the rest of the vid. Stay Strong!

Being made redundant.. hmm, I know what that's like I've had to cope with it 3 times recently in a 13 month period.. it affects you in many many ways and can make you feel utterly worthless. The A2000 is my absolute favorite Amiga hands down! To put it in perspective when it came out it just blew my mind at all the things it could do. All I knew is if I wanted to run Amiga stuff it was obviously there but kick it up a notch and you could add a Bridgeboard and run PC stuff or an Emplant to run MAC stuff and do it all in one platform making that Big Box worth every penny. I bought the one I still have an use today back in 1990 or 1991 it can with an AMAX II with MAC System 7 installed with a 7 port serial card and 8mb RAM. I used that A2000HD to run my BBS running C-Net Amiga Pro and had it answering several phone lines. Of course the Internet took over and I took my BBS down in 1997 after being online for 10 yrs. The A2000HD replaced my A1000 and A500 but for one reason or another I never acquired a Bridgeboard which for me was an attraction. Most of my friends had PC's at the time and would comment about how powerful their systems were compared to my Amiga 2000HD and then they would often scratch their heads wondering how the A2000 could do things their PC's could not. When Win95 came out a friend called me and said now his PC could do things my Amiga could and I told him its about time cuz the Amiga came out in 1985 and the PC took all that time to catch up yet required a lot of power to achieve what the Amiga could do effortlessly. I own other Amiga's, A500, A600, A1200, A2000HD and an A4000. I love them all but none of them have had the impact the A2000 did for me because I was there when it first came out and saw its potential. The first Amiga I ever saw was the A1000 and the first thing I ever saw it run was Battle Chess and while I am not into games what I saw that day blew my mind and because of that experience its one of my favorite games. The first time I ever experienced true sound from an Amiga was on an A500 running the game It Came From The Dessert and while I do not like the game I do love the intro so when I actually run that the Control Amiga Amiga keys get hit a lot. Like I said I am not much into games but when I do play them I do it on either my A1200 or A600 both of which have accelerators in them.

The schematics you were looking at, were probably for the Amiga 2000 A from Braunschweig in Germany which was based on the Amiga 1000. Your Amiga 2000 is the "Cost Reduced" Version, also called B2000, based on the A500. The B2000 integrated many of the discrete logic and PALs into Gary and FAT Agnus (from the A500) and Buster. The higher Integration allowed them to reduce the mainboard from 4 to 2 Layers where much of the cost saving comes from. Also the original A2000 from BSW had only 512KB Memory, as the old "thin" Agnus couldn't handle more, not even as slow RAM, but it had a 512KB Expansion in the CPU Slot, wich is in theory true fast RAM (but mapps at C0000), as it isn't controlled by Agnus. But in my Benchmarks the Fast RAM of the A2000 wasn't really faster than the Slow RAM of the B2000 and Zorro Expansions were much faster, but I didn't stress the Custom Chips in the tests. I Also built a replacement for this CPU Slot Memory Expansion based on SRAM, with no wait states and it was even slightly faster, than the Zorro DRAM expansions.
@GadgetUK1645 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info there! Ah, so there is an earlier board that uses them! Sounds like the original A2000 is rare?
@janhofmeier94275 жыл бұрын
@@GadgetUK164 I think there not that much A2000 produced before they switched to the B2000. But I don't think they are *that* rare. I got mine many years ago without knowing it was a A2000 and it went to storage because it didn't work because auf battery damage and I didn't know how to fix it. I finally fixed it a few month ago by mainly just removing the corrosion. All traces beside the ones connecting the rtc to the battery were fine, just the CPU sockel has some issues (it's one with the round holes and the corrosion made some of them to big) at the moment I have just stuck another sockel between the old and the CPU but maybe I will change the socket someday. But I think I at leas removed all of the corrison with the fiber glas pen so it shouldn't get worse. I also have one of the early A2088 bridgeboards (also ot it by "accident" with BSW (Braunschweig) printed on it. I got fammiliar with the B2000 schematics, when I fixed the B2000, wich I ot together with the A2000 but had far worse battery damage and needed lots of traces to be repaired.
@janhofmeier94275 жыл бұрын
@@GadgetUK164 But the only reason someone would want a A2000 instead a B2000 is for the collection. From the technical point of few the B2000 is superior in any way except that the C00000 RAM in theory could be faster on the A2000. Also there were 2 common revisions of the B2000. The Rev 4.x had an old FAT Agnus and hat therefore 512K Chip and 512K Slow ram and the Rev6 had all of it's 1MB of onboard memory as chip ram as it came with the newer Agnus. Also the Rev 6 used bigger RAM chips (and therefore less of them). The Rev 5 had the big ram chips but still the old Agnus. But its very very rare as almost none of them were produced because the better Agnus was availible before the bigger RAM chips becme cheaper as the small ones.

i had ideas like taking the raspberry pi from the gpio to the amigas hd connector on the 1200, but a program needs to be wrote i think. just to make the raspberry pi appear as a "virtual" drive to the 1200, but whats going to happen in the program is that workbench and all that goes along with it, like the sd card on the pi, are now going to communicate with the 1200 through that slot. the other idea was, modify uae from the software emulation in the programming to read and write through the hardware address either on the board the ec020 or the expansion slot, 68030 or higher. everything we need to run the amiga is in the uae interface. maybe a self booting option to get the user in on the configuration they chose. the point also is we wouldnt have to worry about hardware roms because we can just use the software rom in uae. now what about conflicts? table and bridge, in software "wrap" the programming in aue might actually conflict with the hardware on the board, unless its properly tabled over. basically.... i dont want to spend 500 fucking dollars on a vampire 1200. theres 4gb of memory on the pi 4. also, id like to see something like instead of "chip memory" board memory instead of graphics memory as well. and fast mem as the high mem region. what about board memory, 2mb, extended memory (which would still function fast mem) which isnt being used at all, literally, 128 MB on a fucking accelerator is useless. and the the OS doesnt even use an FPU to help computate the system around the board. its all rom through software bucking(banking)(bank switching) its SLOW AS Fuck :) excuse my language some. and the PI's mem as extended mem. it could all accumulate into fast mem, but the system has to suport it. what i am hoping ofr is someone writes a kernal and flashes it on a bridged rom for the high rom(bottom) low rom(top) in orientation on the board. the kernal could support all those features and we could actually modernize the amiga in step and use the advanced graphical capabilities of the pi and the sound, off of the pi including, get this: MODERN WEB BROWSING...and.. game support :) the overall idea, keep the amiga functioning the same, drop a pi on it and make it work synonymous with the amiga. the source code for UAE off of their site. github.com/tonioni/WinUAE its for winuae, but how difficult is it to just write over for linux? what would be really sweet is bypassing linux all together, or even writing its kernel over to a solid winuae boot, or desktop. maybe someone would think that was a neat idea and drop a configuration utility on the desktop to switch between computers, or something. what would be even neater is a clean integration into say.... linux. allow linux and winuae to function all from AmigaOS desktop AmigaOS was based off Unix anyways, practically similar id say "hey! look at me" but im not the programmer of choice for any of this really which is sad, however i hope i helped in some way shape or form i know its not much thanks for listening

Firstly, thank you for holding on. I have always liked your videos a lot, though I barely give a thumbs up, not only to you, but to anyone. The white powder you found on the PCB, after drying off, is probably a salt, coming from the reaction of the vinegar with the alkaline battery juice. And right there is a point I would like to make: One thing that has always annoyed me a bit about your method of treating battery corrosion, is that after treating the PCB with vinegar are you rinse it off with IPA. Salts in general may be somewhat soluble in IPA but not that much. Most salts are very soluble in water, though. So instead of rinsing the PCB with IPA, you should rinse it with distilled or deionised water. After that, rinse it with IPA thoroughly, in order to get all the water off. Just recently I restored an A500+ with the usual battery damage. The board was very, very dirty, so my first step was to wash the whole PCB in regular tap water, after removing all the socketed chips. Then I treated the battery leakage with some vinegar and washed the PCB with tap water, again. Next I immersed the whole PCB in distilled water for a couple of minutes, moving it around. This should remove every trace of salts, even below the soldered chips. Then I immersed the whole PCB in IPA, again moving it around a bit. The IPA should now pick up all remaining water. Last step was to put out the PCB into the sun for drying. The IPA will evaporate quickly, even if it is mixed with some water. The water will not stay behind. If there is no sun available, a hairdryer might do the trick as well. After this treatment the PCB looked almost brand-new, except for the parts who have the corrosion.

It's most likely exactly what happened to mine in this video! ie. you get a bad via due to the corrosion. You should probably clean up each of the vias and test connectivity from the top side of the PCB to the bottom on each via around the area of the battery. If one doesnt join, unblock it and feed a piece of fine wire through the via and solder on each side. If you're lucky it may spring to life!

Thanks, yes - I have seen that in the past with bad IPA, but in this case its not the IPA! Having removed that white chalky stuff I can clean with the same IPA and nothing is left there. It was somekind of salt or something left on the board that the IPA wasn't disolving.

I need to find time to pull my Amiga 2000HD out of the box its been in for the last 30 some years and check out what state it is in and get it working again. Where did you get the diagnostic ROM? That might be something I would find useful in testing my machine. BTW, What is kynar? I would probably just use some small piece of wire and solder it in place on both sides of the board to repair a via.
@GadgetUK1645 жыл бұрын
Diag ROM is free to download! Logika diagnostic ROM is part of Amiga Forever - if you search the net there are downloads of that too!
@kevincozens68375 жыл бұрын
@@GadgetUK164 Thank you for that information. That is a bit surprising but good to know. Knowing the size of the ROM chip used in the A2000 I don't have any EPROM chips of that size, nor do I have an EPROM programmer that can accommodate a device with that many pins.
@GadgetUK1645 жыл бұрын
You can buy Diag ROM EPROMs on eBay!

Shame that nobody has made a PC board, with a more modern cpu on it, add one to a vampire and you would have a kick ass Amiga. The cable ties on the PSU wires are factory. My 2000 came like that from the factory.

The A1500 was a 2x Floppy, no HDD version made to compete with the Ceckmate A1500 trying to squash that.
@GadgetUK1645 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I think on reflection I had a 1500 - if you look at the photo you can see the badge that seems to resemble the 1500. It's that long ago I had forgotten it had 2 drives too.

I wish I knew what to try next on fixing my 2000 with a black screen. Plugged a USB stick into the Gotek and the. BOOM. All the custom chips I've tested work in my Amiga 500 though, so I'm a bit at a loss as to what I blew up... I miss having the extra ram and the hard drive. 😡
@GadgetUK1645 жыл бұрын
Have you tried swapping around the CIA chips? Also check for corrosion around the CPU area. The other thing you could try is running the latest DiagROM instead of Kickstart ROM, or Logika if you can get it.
@KTDFox5 жыл бұрын
GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods yup, have swapped the cias around, and tried the cias from my 500 with no luck. Same with the Gary, cpu, Paula, Denise and kickstarts, they all work in my 500 too. Only part I haven’t swapped between the two is the agnus because it won’t come out of the socket in my 500. :( Definitely need a diagrom chip to see if I can get anything beyond just a black screen.

I have a 2000HD and this video made me (reminded me to) check it. I last powered it up about a year ago and it worked. But the battery has leaked. It appears to be entirely superficial. But what I wanted to ask you was that I mixed some baking soda water and dipped q-tips in the baking soda water and cleaned up the area around the battery. I let it dry without rinsing it off. Will the baking soda water cleaning solution neutralize the battery fluid? I thought I heard you say it wasn't acid, but instead was a base that needed vinegar. Will this stuff work? I don't happen to have any vinegar at the moment. Also, what about rinsing it down? I left it un-rinsed in case there was any further leakage or something. Is it a mistake to leave it on there? Any help you could off would be appreciated.
@GadgetUK1645 жыл бұрын
The batteries on these tend to be Alkaline - we use white vinegar (acetic acid) to help neutralise it. The obvious point here is ideally you would need to get an accurate balance between the PH of the acid and the PH of the alkaline - which is near impossible. But the acid helps with clean up etc. After leaving that to soak for 20 mins or something I would wash it off with a few rinses of IPA, distilled water, and finally IPA. Maybe blow dry the board to make sure its nice and dry before powering back up.
@christo9305 жыл бұрын
OK. I do have some distilled water to rinse it. I have IPA in .90 .70 (but it has wintergreen in it) and .50 Any advice on which one to use? I greatly appreciate your help.
@tommyovesen5 жыл бұрын
I think you micro-manage the cleaning. Use lots of IPA and then rinse in shower and dry

Was it possible to put PC boards in the PC-slots and use these natively in the Amiga side?
@GadgetUK1645 жыл бұрын
Not that I am aware, although you could put a PC HDD in and the Amiga could use that, as well as the PC using it too. I think some people did that to avoid the cost of Amiga SCSI drives vs PC IDE drives etc.

I have an old A2000 put to storage 10 years ago. It was facing the same problem so I removed the Varta battery, and replaced with a coin battery and diode. Was working both before and after. However, I only cleaned the board with alcohol, not vinager. I didnt know better. Do you think it's ruined by now? :-(
@GadgetUK1645 жыл бұрын
IPA is still a good thing to do - it just doesn't remove all of the alkaline normally. You could just have another light clean, this time with white vinegar first, then rinse off with distilled water, followed by IPA (I just rinse with IPA, but as other have said - distilled water first helps remove an salts).
@daw75635 жыл бұрын
Okay, thanks. I have to dig it out of storage and do it then :--) I hope it's not too late.
