Òrain Luaidh Gàidhlig ann an Innse Gall (1941) [Le làn fhaclan agus eadar-theangachadh]
This video was filmed in 1941 by the English cinematographer Jack Cardiff, probably on the island of Lewis and Harris. It was preserved by the British Council; you can see the original here: film.britishco...
The film was enhanced by the KZbinr glamourdaze: • Women of The Outer Heb...
I used glamourdaze's enhanced version, adding lyrics, information about waulking songs, a transcription of both songs, and improving the audio quality of the original. As a result of glamourdaze restoring the video, the video and audio were out of sync in several places; I mostly corrected this.
Here is a full version of the first song www.tobarandua...

I literally exist because of a waulking song! When my dad first met my mom, he played Folkways Music of the Hebribes for her as a test to see if they really would be compatible. She didn't run out screaming so here I am. I still have the record. Great to see this film of it actually being done and hear the songs again.

Why is this not the first thing that shows up when you search "traditional Scottish music" or "scottish folk songs"? KZbin likes to push the cinematic Celtic woman type of music, but this is what I have been looking for!

Waulking songs are preculiar to the highlands and the outlying islands where the women "walked the wool" to soften it. It is not unusual that such a remote location hosting such an obscure tradition would be overlooked; much as the American music from the Appalachians and the Ozarks was overlooked until the mid-20th Century.

What beatiful pure souls. Look at the exuding happiness and contentment singing tunes like ages of ancestry used to. The communal merriment, the guiding and pastoral elder bewatching them, the primordial vibrance of chants uplifting their modest work into revelatory art of eternal core-humanity. We gained so few and yet lost so much. God bless from Teutonia.

The near-most woman on the left side of the table is my absolute doppelganger, though, like, I am her and she is me and it's making me really emotional about my Scottish heritage because my family came from the Inner Hebrides and there's my face in a video from the Outer Hebrides eighty years ago T_T

The woman in the beginning of this clip who is standing alone and later seen at the far-most right hand seat who gets up to wring the cloth and is later slapping the fabric is a doppelganger of my Cousin Susie!!! I sent this to her and her mother and they nearly fainted with the resemblance. This is precious and amazing.

It's been driving me nuts that the first waulking song sounded so familiar, then I realized -- Enya recorded it as "Ebudae": kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKSQpZmin7GUfMU Lovely to hear the original in its original context!
