Had the Tech 7 n killed the soles with in 6 months on OEM ktm pegs, bought the SG12 and 13 months later the soles still look great. Btw, Alpinestars claims they will repair boots n replace soles but when I reached out to them and sent pics they told me to buy new boots even when I offered to pay for the repairs- so took their advice n got the SG12 a superior boot. Excellent for extreme enduro. Touch boots

Same experience! The tech 7’s are very comfortable but the soles were shot in six months. My cousin and I bought the tech 7’s roughly the same time with the same experience. We both feel it’s super comfortable but the longevity of the soles are pretty poor. Just switched to the SG 12’s.

@Sopphaue I have wide feet as well (2E to 4E depending on who is measuring). The Tech 7 is the most comfortable for wide feet. That is because the toe box is wider and it is the softest and least supportive and/or protective. That said, it's very comfortable and a great boot for the price. The SG-12 is fantastic for workmanship, support, protection and comfort. With the micro-adjusting straps, I had no problem getting the boot to fit my wide foot. Though I will add that its snug to start and takes a few hours of breaking in to get comfortable. This boot is at a completely different level than the Tech 7, but also costs about $100 more. I would add the Sidi Crossfire 3 SRS into the conversation. This boot is even more fantastic IMO than the SG-12. Again, because of the micro-adjusting straps, you can get this boot to fit a wide foot. It fits my foot like a glove and has spectacular comfort. No other boot that I've worn is as comfortable as this boot. Price is about $200 more than that Tech 7. Out of the box, the Tech 7 is by far the most comfortable for wide feet. If you are looking for great support, protection or durability though, I would consider the SG-12 or Crossfire 3 and deal with the initial discomfort during break-in.

I have been wearing Tech 7 boots for many years and liked them. Very comfortable, could feel the pegs and controls just fine, and could walk around almost like wearing regular shoes, but about 4 weeks ago I also got to feel a tree stump crush my left foot and break some metatarsals. Since I am off work now and will be for at least 3 months and have some time to kill while I am waiting to get the pins removed and cast off my foot, I am doing some boot shopping on line and have narrowed it down so far to the Gaerne SG-12. I still care about comfort, but really am most concerned about protection. All of my reading on line so far has been steering me toward the Gaerne. I contacted my cousin this morning because I value his opinion on these types of purchases and wanted to know what he thought about the Gaerne. His response was that he just bought the SG-12 boots 3 weeks ago and he really likes them. We are both near the age of 50 and both started riding when we were teen agers. This is my first (and hopefully last) major injury. I have to wonder if my foot would be less damaged if I'd been wearing a better boot. Going forward, when it comes to purchasing protective riding equipment, I will spend the extra money, because I'm worth it.

I know a lot of people try these boots on in the showroom and think the Tech 7s are better because they feel like a running shoe. Having owned both, there is a reason the SG-12s are more expensive, they are more comfortable on the bike and way more protective. I think people confuse the lack of protection on the Tech 7s as comfort, I mean a shoe is comfortable, but you wouldn't ride with one. My feet would always feel fatigued after a long day in the mountains with the Tech 7s.

The SG-12 is fantastic for workmanship, support, protection and comfort. With the micro-adjusting straps, you can customize it to fit to your foot. Though I will add that its snug/stiff to start and takes a few hours of breaking in to get comfortable. IMO, this boot sets the standard for a "premium level" mx boot. IMO, this boot is at a completely different level than the Tech 7, but also costs about $100 more. I would add the Sidi Crossfire 3 SRS into the conversation. This boot is even more fantastic IMO than the SG-12. Again, because of the micro-adjusting straps, you can customize the fit to your foot. It fits my foot like a glove and has spectacular comfort. No other boot that I've worn is as comfortable as this boot. For me it flexes better and is more comfortable than the SG-12. Price is about $200 more than that Tech 7. IMO, this is the boot that should most often be compared to the SG-12. It's tough to compare the Tech 7 to the SG-12 and/or Crossfire 3, because they simply are at different levels. The Gaerne and Sidi are built in Italy by craftsmen - not so for the Tech 7. IMO the Tech 7 is super comfy and lighter in weight, but is not going to match either the Gaerne or the Sidi for durability, protection or long-term comfort. But there is a significant price difference too. Because of the durability, I think you will get a better long-term value from the SG-12 or Crossfire 3, plus have a better boot along the way. I would expect the Tech 7 to last 1 or 2 years. The SG-12 or Crossfire 3 should last 3-5 years, possibly even longer if you take care of it. BTW, I'm not a bootie fan so the Tech 10 never even got in the race. I've never tried the Fox Instinct.

Nice video! Just wish it was out before I bought my Tech 7s a while ago. You touched on everything that I like and dislike about the Tech 7. Likes: Very comfortable, the first ride they felt broken in, offers great support, excellent boot for the price. Dislikes: I have a wider calf so I can't sport my knee protection as comfortably. The buckles are tough to lock, even out of the box, and they pop loose from time to time. Probably has to do with the knee brace and not being able to tighten it as much. Overall I really like the Tech 7s though and don't regret buying them. It was a good buy but I will try out the SG next time.

Ive got a pair of the Tech 7's, and have ridden with them religiously for the past 2 seasons. They were perfectly comfortable right out of the box, basically no break in. And they are holding up really well, still look almost new. I did go head on with a razer 1000 turbo 2 weekends ago, and my ankle is still pretty wrecked. Protection is there, but could be a little better. Still, a great boot.

Honestly your ignition and clutch covers can be replace and fixed and maybe even touched up, but toes, ankles and feet don’t always heal correctly, also just take the steel toes off, and your covers won’t get stuffed up, plus it helps keep your feet not getting caught on the brake pedal and making accidental shifts, I’ve had a pair of tech sevens, they don’t last and don’t protect your feet or toes, I now wear sg12’s best switch I’ve ever made, yeah you don’t feel your controls as much, but you’ll get used it, and you get so much more protection and last a lot longer.

On my second pair of S12 and super happy for the quality and they just feels so secure. But not very watertight. Therefor I also have a pair of TCX Comp Evo 2 Michelin who are softer (they don't feel so secure) and can hold some water outside. In a "competition" I just won a pair of Tech 7 Enduro. I don't need 3 pairs of boots, but couldn't change them in some other riding gear. With a membrane inside I guess they will be used for winter conditions and hope they will hold my feet warm and dry.

I purchased the Tech 7s and have to say that I love the comfort of the boot. My one and only complaint would be that if you have big calves, this boot presents a little bit of a challenge trying to get the velcro to line up and secure fully and that is without knee braces. I definitely think the design of this boot could stand some improvement in fit and adjustability at the top.

Made in Italy vs made in Thailand, SG12 last brand not model brand made in Italy by Italian artisans, vs a name made in a sweat shop out of Asia! No contest, Alpine stars you pay for a name, yes they maybe comfortable, if you want to keep throwing money and supporting companies that rip you off and still charge a premium go ahead, I’ll support a real company and there people, even if it costs more, I don’t mind a break in period that’s always has proved my boots are genuine and last and they always have. Pay for a name or pay for quality and actual true value, any intelligent person it’s an easy decision, dumb people chase a name brand and support corporate greed, it’s that simple. SG12 will continue to be my go too boots.

Where you were pressing with your thumbs at about 5:27 is right where riders get metatarsal breaks. So some stiffness there is good. (Not suggesting that for riding, just a reason to like the Gaerne.)

Got some whiskey throttle and went off the back of the bike but I have no idea that I broke my foot for about 10 minutes. So I'm not sure what happened to cause the breaks. Now I want to know so I can try to do something about it. I've been thinking I might need new boots. I was hoping you could tell me how a foot breaks like mine in these boots!! @@alienxyt I don’t know of any motorcycle boots that will protect you from a top down (top of the foot) crush. The sole stiffness is to protect you if your foot is laying sideways and someone runs over it (and of course to make it easier to stand on pegs and prevent hyper flexing.) The biggest strongest toe cup you can find would be good. My guess is something like the frame smashed into your foot from the top.

@@alienxyt I am no expert. Apparently a twist or sudden turn while the foot is pressing down can cause it as well. I did break my foot one time due to twisting while logging, but at that time I was not very aware of what metatarsals even were. (I slipped on some ice while moving a tree.). Nice video ! Great review, quite informative... Yet there is something that was not mentioned in the video and that is still important and relevant to some people ( and I am one of those). That is the range of available sizes for each of those boots. I've checked on Gaerne and Alpinestars websites as I was curious. The SG12 goes from size 7 to 13 or 14 depending on the edition. The Tech 7 offers 3 to 4 more sizes as it goes from 5 to 16. That's a big plus for me and definitely worth noticing ! I'm 6.4ft tall and wear boots and shoes in size 15, which means the SG12 would not be an option for me. So if you're a kid or a tall guy like myself, then the best - and arguably the only possible - choice between those two boots might have to be the Tech 7.

Caveat for new riders buying their first MX boot: calling either of these "comfortable" is only relative to MX boots. In absolute terms, all MX boots with an acceptable level of protection are horrendously uncomfortable. Compared to anything you've worn before, they'll be heavy, hard to walk in, seemingly impossible to find the gear shift in, and uncomfortable to the point of pain. All of this gets better as you break them in and acclimatize to them, and the protection level is absolutely worth it, but it'll be easier if you go into this with the right expectation. You'll read a lot of comments saying the tech7s are "light" and "comfortable", but...no, they're really not. Another hot tip: these boots are necessarily very rigid. If your feet are even slightly outside whatever the manufacturer thinks "normal" is, they will not fit. Ever. You can ride in pain, or skimp on protection, or...get as close to a fit as you can, then take the boots to a ski boot fitter. There are no MX boot fitters in most MX shops, because the MX industry glorifies pain. Skiers like to be comfortable, and they have similarly rigid boots. Nobody expects to buy a top ski boot and wear it off the shelf, if you think about it for a minute the idea is laughable. So talk to those guys and have a happier life.

I've had Alpinestars, Fox, even AXO but my SG12s are the best for protection, durability and quality. Remember when all boots had the stitched-on sole? Alpinestars were better 20 years ago, in my opinion.

I do agree 100%. Had Tech2/4/7/8. Best quality was Tech2/4. Tech 7 was more comfy and Tech 8 start to fall apart one day... after that I switched to SIDI SRS2. Really like them! Next boot you can see in this video on the very left side!

I have really wide feet and high arch. I tried all Gaerne SGs and didn't even considered Alpinestars Tech-7 or 10, because they looked much narrower and I like the high quality of the Gaerne boots. Just when I wanted to give up, I gave the Tech-7 a shot, and voila: perfect fit for me. Enjoying them since 3 years, no problems at all. They tend to squeak when walking, but hey...

Hi everyone. As a beginner motorcyclist, I am trying to find a balance between not compromising on solid gear to ensure I have a safe foundation on the road, and not going overboard by buying things I won't need. I want a Honda Rebel 500 as my first bike, so nothing rebellious here. I guess I would have an urban style, but at the same time, safety is my priority over style and everything else. I understand these are very high-quality and high-performance boots. Is this what is needed for all riding styles for optimal safety, or is this more for motorcyclists who actually go off-road or are 'extreme' riders? All tips and knowledge are welcome!

If you only ride MX, SX, or like flat track stuff I'd run Tech 7. If you are offroad I would run the SG12 or another replaceable sole steel capped boot. I would stay away from Tech 7 in offroad riding/racing if you like having all your toes.

Great video. I decided to go with the SG12's out of these two for durability and protection. I just got them and have been wearing them around the house to see if I like them. I normally wear 11 1/2 so got an 11. The fit is great for my foot/toes, but the memory foam is super uncomfortable and there is lots of pressure around the insides of my ankles/just above the ankle bone. I know there is great support in there, but this just feels a bit painful like someone is pushing their thumb into my leg. Does this go away once they break in? I'd hate to keep them only to find it doesn't get more comfortable. I can't really imagine wearing these all day as is.

David, I don't know if that would go away or not. sounds like you've got a pretty good pressure point. I can wear my SG12s all day with no issues. I would use our fit guarantee rather than regret it later on. The Tech 7 are very comfortable. - Chase

I went from Sidi SRS2's (very hard to buckle with large calves even with the additional adjustments) to Gaerne SG12. My fat calves made it too hard to fit in the Sidi's but my new Sg12's have too much space above my toes and had to adjust my shifter up a notch to fit. Harder to shift gears with the SG-12's (too tall in toe box area). The SG12's have super supportive feel from ankle on up. Tried on the Tech 7's but the size 10 have too small an opening for my calves and the size 11's were too big in the foot area. The SG12 in 10.5 size fit well but thinking I should have tried the new Sidi to see if the calf area is bigger. My old AXO RC5's fit better than any of them! Too bad AXO has disappeared. And who wants to spend $600 on the Tech 10's anyway. The SG12's were too much as it is. Tried on the new Leatt 5.5's. Leatts are very thick all the way around and seem a bit too Chinese in quality like the Fox Instinct.

10:04 wrong. that is not a glide/pivot point. That's actually just a glide/stopper that moves in its own groove. the pivot point on the side shown here is actually located under the plastics of the second buckle right above that logo plate with the screw in it which you mistakenly referred to as a glide/pivot point. Fact check me. Unbuckle it and lift that dirt-colored plastic, you'll see the actual pivot point.

I must have gotten a weird cut on the SG 12. After a full season in them they still squeeze the inside of my left foot. However, the hinges have popped out and get hooked on the plastic side panels on my bike. It always happens at the worst time.
