FURTHER NOTES: The SG22 has been announced! They claim the same protection but slimmer, lighter, and more feel. They also claim 'Made in Italy craftsmanship' so lets hope it's still made in Italy. The front shin plate has air vents which could be useful in hot weather or wet conditions. Personally I won't be in a rush to buy it and will wait to hear long-term reports. But it sounds good... SIZING Always test the size before buying, they tend to run high e.g. If you’re size 13, the 12 may fit best. Most riders report the SG12 works well with wider feet. Narrow feet? Other brands might fit better. CATCHING ON FOOTPEGS? One of our guys says the plastic protection around the inside ankle can get hooked on the edge of his footpegs when he's putting his foot down or 'leg paddling'. He filed down the outer edge of his footpeg to reduce the occurrence. It finally happened to me just last month, doh. I've filed my pegs too. It doesn't seem to happen for most riders. WATERPROOF? Almost no boot claims to be waterproof, although you can be lucky! But a few owners are telling me Gaernes let in more water than other brands. Let us know if you found this is the case. One thing we don't like, a wide strip of material at the top of the boot absorbs water way too easily and makes the boot heavier in wet conditions far too quickly. ANKLE SUPPORT As mentioned, the ankle support is quite narrow, a bottle of water shoved in overnight can widen this. One owner tells me this is 'memory foam' and will eventually adapt to your ankle shape if you persist with a good run-in period. If you don't have enough room for your toes, remember boot cobbers can use a 'toe widener' tool to create more space... OVER 100 FREE ENDURO TRAINING VIDS English not your first language? Sizing is definitely on the tight side. I normally wear 10.5D but the Gaernes SG-12 and GX-4 both fit me like a glove in size 10. I haven't ridden them yet, only worn them around the showroom and at home. A couple of hours of wearing the SG12s at home is tight but still very comfortable, but I would have ankles that are on the narrow side with a pretty wide foot.

I've had my SG10s for about a decade and they're still going strong. They fit my wide foot comfortably and I can wear them all day long. Highly recommend them, and when it comes time to replace them I'll be checking out the Fastback as well as the SG10 and 12s.

I have a super wide foot. Bought the SG12 boots because everyone said how wide they were. They were still not wide enough for me. My solution was to put them on (which was literally painful) and use a heat gun on the tight spots. I'd heat that spot up to about 175-200 degrees Fahrenheit and then walk around and crouch down and so forth. After repeating this process for about a week... They now fit like they were custom made for me. Most comfortable and protective boots I've ever owned. The repeated heating doesn't seem to have negatively affected the plastic... But only time will tell.

Recently purchased the fastback enduro. Awesome protection and decent grip on the trails. I was riding a lot of steep chutes in and out of creeks, lots of mud and pushing the bike a lot. They seemed reasonably waterproof, I walked through ankle deep water to test them out. A massive step up from the fox off-road boots I had.

I just started dual sport riding 2 years ago. Started with Formas then went to Gaerne SG12 Enduros. I wanted max protection because so many injuries happen to ankles and lower legs and I’ve had reconstructive surgery on one lower leg and I don’t want it dorked up. I also wanted a good tread for grip on pegs and in dirt. I also have very high arches and the width of the SG12s gets me what I need there too. I’ve had a few minor spills and glad I had these on. They are not waterproof, which is a trade off for some folks; I’ve had to walk my DR650 through a couple deep swift streams and got my feet wet but that’s a small issue to me. Lastly, being new to dual sport, it took a little getting used to such stiff boots for gear changing and not being able to feel the shifter like soft boots. But again, that’s resolved with time. The protection and comfort are really incredible and as you say actually a good gear investment for longterm. Thanks for another great video!

My first motorcycle boots was cheap Gaerne GX-1, I bought them in September 2018 and a week later I got into an accident, car was turning from right side to the main road where he crashed into me. The impact of the car's bumper hit the frame of the motorcycle, the crash bar and the boots. So as result left hand scaphoid fracture, surgery, the rehabilitation process. My good old XL600V went to scrapyard. The boot was slightly torn, but luckily my leg wasn’t hurt at all! I've been riding in these boots for six years now and they still ok. Next I'm thinking about buying SG22, new old school limited series colour scheme look’s awesome. I just want to say thanks to Gaerne for excellent quality boots that saved my leg in that accident. Take care of yourself, dudes!

I’ve had my SG12’s for a few years now. For someone with wide feet that rides single track through rocks, logs etc. these boots have been awesome. The only thing I would say is they take some getting used to when they’re new because they are much stiffer then the average boot. I had some very mushy fox boots previous to my sg12’s and the difference was night and day for both stiffness and protection. Unless I hear quality is going downhill, it’s only sg12’s for me.

I owned one set of Sidi crossfire Ones for almost 10years - great boot, handed them down to two other riders (sons). Owned two sets of Sidi crossfire twos - great boots wore then out in the sole from kick start and foot pegs - again great boot. Bought the Sidi crossfire three. Immediately hurt my ankles particularity the right. There was some weidness with the hinge. Gave them away. Bought SG12 in my size - 46. Amazing boot - felt just right for first ride. Great for 6 months, But its been a really wet 2 years and they get soaked every week, after 6 months of getting soaked every weekend they stank like hell and they had shrunk about a size and were giving me a bunion on my little toe. Bought identical SG12 in size 47 last week. So I've bought 3 sets of $700-800 boots in the last 18 months but you only live once and I ride every weekend and SG12's are 100 percent best boot for protection and comfort . But you have to fan dry them after every ride or they will stink
@jamesal0

One other thing the Sidi crossfire two's ankle pivot pokes out a little and it can hook the foot peg tip when you're putting you foot down. resulting 0kmh crash. SG12 has small ramp on ankle to prevent this happening

I've had plenty of rides now with my SG12s now, James. It's a small niggling point but that material at the very top of the boot absorbs water really quickly. A few guys have pointed out in wet conditions it make the boots heavier a lot faster than other boots and I'd have to agree. Plenty of drying out when it happens to avoid the dreaded boot shrinkage!

Actually we've found it the other around in our group, James. The Sidi Crossfires never caught on the footpegs but the Gaernes do! I bought a used pair of Gaerne SG10 boots several years ago and they were great. They were much better than brand new Thor and Fox boots that weren't very protective and the Thor boots wore out very quickly. I decided to try a pair of Sidi Crossfire 3 boots because they are lighter and a bit more water resistant than the SG10s and the Crossfire 2 boots are too narrow for me. The Crossfire 3 boots don't fit over knee braces as well as the Gaerne boots and the rear of one of the soles started to come unglued. It got that fixed and still wear them sometimes. I got some new Forma Predator 2 boots a little over a year ago and although they fit well, they are garbage! One of the three screws holding the shin plate to the rest of the boot was stripped right out of the box and fell out when I first tried on the boots. I had to replace it with a rivet. One of the metal toe caps broke right away from a minor impact and the tiny screws feel out of the other one without hitting anything. Then this past weekend the front half ofthe right boot's sole completely separate from the rest of the boot and I don't even remember hitting anything. The stiching of the upper to the middle layer didn't lock into any other thread inside the way normal stiching does; it just poked through both layers and then came back out to the top each time. My SG10s that I bought used and then used for a few years are still in better shape that the fairly new Forma boots and in similar condition to the Sidi boots. I plan to buy a new pair of Gaerne SG12s or SG12s soon and stick with Gaerne unless someting changes with Gaerne or another brand. I was considering the Leatt boots but the made in China aspect is too much of a risk IMO. The Gaernes are a premium boot with a price too match but seem to be the best value compared to other boots that are almost as expensive but not as durable or protective.

I went with the Sidi Crossfire 3. A KZbin review of the SG12 and Crossfire's equated them in terms of quality and protection, however they pointed out the Gaerne boots retained a ton of water weight in the neoprene liner when crossing streams and the like. That one fact helped me decide between the two. After several rides in the Sidi's I'm quite satisfied with their quality, fit and finish. And yes, they shed water very well after going thru knee deep Appalachian streams in them. If I were in a drier climate, I'd go for the Gaerne because I like the extra support of the neoprene.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 2 жыл бұрын
Ha, I actually drowned my Gaernes for the first time yesterday! I drained the water out then had to do it again about 10 minutes later, maybe that was the retained water coming out of the liner? Seemed okay after that. I hope your Crossfires work out well, our rider survey seemed to show their quality has dropped over the past decade.... prior to that they were seen as the equivalent of Gaerne.

I'm running TCX Men's Comp Evo, Sidi Crossfire 2 and Gaerne SG12. The TCX are the most comfortable without much compromise in protection. The Gaerne's are stiff and don't provide much feel for technical terrain when I need to dab. Also, the memory foam in the ankle is way too tight. No amount of bottle stuffing has helped. I save those for faster tracks. But, they seem to provide good protection. The Crossfire 2s provide the most terrain feel. The TCX are a good compromise between the two.

I’ve had a pair of SG12’s for about 6 years. With constant abuse on and off the bike (ie blasting with a pressure washer, not cleaning for months at a time) they are literally as good as the day I bought them. All I can say is if you get these boots make sure you like them because they will probably be the last pair of boots you’ll buy!

Yep. If they fit well you'll probably never buy another brand I reckon. All I would add is make sure they fit well! Wear them in the shop. Support your local shop. Too many guys buy online trying to save money then complain when the SG12 doesn't fit their weird shaped feet well. 🤣

Gaerne SG-10's are what I have been wearing since I started riding in 2017. I've replaced a broken metal toe guard and a plastic buckle strap and buckle. The buckle due to an impact with a rock. I bought yhem because none of the brands the stores carried fit. I must have tried a half dozen different boots before reading that the Gaerne SG-10 fit wider feet better. My size 13 feet are not really that wide (E or EE) but they are nearly flat and require a high volume box - and I hate having my toes are squished. The piping is worn in a couple spots between the buckles but they are still in great shape. I've thought about upgrading to SG-12's but the 10's work for me and they fit. I will not change brands or model at this point and, although my boots will probably last another 5-10 years, I'm thinking about buying another pair just in case these get shipped off to Romania, Taiwan, or China. If I never use them, I could always resell them in 10 years and get my money back (less inflation).

I had a pair of SG10s. The ankle pivot on the inside edge bulges out and was awkward to grip the frame, ankle wanted to be either side of the frame and not where i wanted it. The rigidity of the boot was good for protection but interfered with operating foot controls. HEAVY, I've noticed that with age i often catch my feet on things in trying to step over and a heavy boot only makes that worse. So I sold them and bought some Alpinestar Techs. I know what I've done, comfort over protection. So far i haven't had a lower leg injury but it's a roll of the dice for sure. Currently contemplating my next boot purchase....

Do the Techs really have worse protection? I have Tech7s and it's hard to imagine anything more solid that's not welded onto your leg. Also heavy to the point they're hard to pick up with one hand. If you're saying the SGs are even more solid and heavier than that, I don't think I could live with them.

An important consideration when you are buying these boots!! After 3 years of riding with forma terrain evo and a devastating knee injury, I decided to invest to the best protection for my legs by buying custom cti braces and a pair of sg12 boots. After riding only 3 times with the new boots I tear and the acl on the other knee. Although there were multiple factors to that dramatic injury I believe one of them unfortunately are the boots. Although they offer excellent foot protection, they are so rigid that your ankle joint has almost no movement. As a result when you land from a crash your first point of shock absorption and control are not your ankles but your knees! After rehabbing for almost 1.5 year I started riding again but with a pair of new forma boots. Hinged like the sg12's but much more lightweight and flexible. I feel much more safe in them and of course I sold the sg12s. In conclusion, I believe such rigid boots are good if you are riding motocross were a hyperextended ankle during a jump can be avoided. However during enduro riding a lighter more flexible boot offers better overall protection especially on the knee joints. Just my own opinion (175cm, 65kg)
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 2 жыл бұрын
I switched from Sidi Crossfire and Forma Predator to the SG12 boots, Neoklis. I think the amount of ankle movement is similar on all these boots with the most protection... there is ankle movement but it's restricted to prevent hyper-extension or hypo-extension of the ankle. Yours is the first case I've heard where a knee injury may have occurred due to this limited ankle movement. I guess there are always those impacts big enough to cause an injury somewhere. E.g. A leg twist can easily injure a knee, even with knee braces. There's a knee brace that latches on to your boot to limit this, but it might just transfer the force upward and then you might break the neck of your femur bone.
@oellinaras1
@oellinaras1 2 жыл бұрын
I am now using forma terrain tx, not the predators, and the ankle mobility is not comparable at all. For example, if I tried to perform a simple double legged jump when wearing the sg12's I could barely flex my ankle to absorb the impact, whereas with the formas the flexion was much more natural. Who knows, might also have to do with the fact that my feet are smaller so the maximum flexion is limited. Anyways, different body types and sizes suit different equipment.

That ankle support does seem a bit weird.... I first looked at it and thought 'they must be kidding!' but it fitted well for me. I have the Gaerne Fastbacks with an enduro sole. If I could have found the sg12 enduro I probably would have bought them. I don’t do hard enduro, just gravel roads and some grass and dirt pastures. The fastback looks great and is by far the most protective boot I have ever owned, but I recognize the sg12 is tougher. I was wearing Alpinestars Corozals. The fastback is much more protective than the Corozal but also stiffer and not much use in walking. I bought the fastbacks because I had an off in some tall grass when I hit a hidden log. The bike (drz 400) landed on my left foot, the foot peg went right to my ankle. I wasn’t hurt because the Corozal has ankle pucks, but it occurred to me that an inch higher or lower would have been unpleasant. I have not had them long enough to comment on durability. Peg feel is fine.

I unfortunately got the bad orange boot referenced in the video. I found out only because of one of your previous videos. Even though it was well after the warranty when I contacted Gaerne US, I sent them pictures and my receipt and they gave me a full refund. The process took some time but I will buy from them again since they honored the warranty in letter and spirit of the agreement. Rare for any company nowadays. That said, I personally did not like the SG12’s overall because they are simply too stiff and too slick. I should have bought the enduro version, which is what I would have done if I had not already bought a pair of Leatt 5.5’s. Those have a great balance of flexibility and protection. They break in quickly. Oddly, the dye of the internal fabric stains my feet black, even though the lining is red, when the boots get soaked. I have talked to multiple guys who have this boot and none of them had this issue. I guess I have no luck when it comes to buying boots. To compare the two: The Gaerne buckles worked much better than the Leatts. I think that is because they were less flexible. I sprayed them with dry silicone and it helps. The Leatts are more comfortable, easier to walk in, and have better traction than the SG12’s. The soles of the 5.5’s, however, are not holding up as well. I have had to shoe glue the inside part of the toe box on my right boot twice. To me it not that big a deal and they still have plenty of life left in them after two years and lots of wet and nasty rides. I would recommend them as a lower cost option. My next boots will most likely be Gaerne’s just not the SG12’s.

Their parts availability is slim to say the least which could be because of Covid, but good luck in finding matching colors. I have a wide foot and these were absolutely the best fitting boots for my type of feet, I have zero complaints on comfort and fit. I do wish they were a little more waterproof but I guess no boots were really meant to be submerged. I’ve had my boots now for three years and the only two repairs I’ve had to make are the Velcro strap at the top fell apart and I managed to tear the instep strap which I replaced from their meager selection of parts. Would I recommend the Gaerne SG•12 to my friends and family? Absolutely because I feel they are top quality boots worth every penny spent. The only downside is that the SG-12 are quite "long" on the outside, so yo can catch on the levers when you are not riding on the balls of your feet. I have the cheapest gearne boots the gx-1 and I am really happy with them, I have only had them for half a year but they are very comfortable. I can't really compare them to anything since they are my first dirt bike boots but I would still recommend them

Love my sg12s that I bought online but they did not fit my wide feet and ankles well. I bought a toe spreader and shoved a can of peas in the boots and now they are as comfortable as my toucans. Awesome boot I just wish they had a vibram sole

@@crosstrainingenduro spreads the toe area out on the sides. Cobblers use them and you can take the boots and have them do it. I chose to do it myself and found one that would fit down and function in the deep boot. Ebay has a large selection. Many of the larger online stores offer easy exchanges for items that don't fit. In my neck of the woods I find local stores out of stock often as it seems they can't or choose not to keep as much stock to lower their overhead. Also if I need to special order an item I am stuck with it if it does not fit. Anyway the sd12s are the boot thanks ozzman!

I have loved gaerne boots for over 20 years the best thing i find is the hinge in the ankle that allows good brake control for wheelies super important , cant aggree on the life span as i wear a set out in twelve months yep i ride a lot like alot and stand up 90 % of the time and move my feet to the balls often but the soles dont last as long as the uppers still no other boot like them and there stupid expensive .

Yeah that price hurts! I was lucky to get $150 off as there was a sale at the local shop. What sort of footpegs are you using? Our group use the Fastway pegs with the smaller cleats which minimise sole wear. But even standard pegs don't seem to wear out Gaerne soles quickly.

I got my SG12 in 2013 and they look worn but are still in good shape. They fit from the first second. The best boots ever. Before the SG12 i had the Alpinestars Tech 8. These lasted about 12 month before everything falls apart. They were unconfortable from the first to the last day. To open the boots I needed a screwdriver because the fasteners were that tight. They ripped easily the flesh off my fingers, if i tried to open them like normal people do. Before the Tech8 I got Thor cheap shit. They didn´t last 6 month, before the "leather" broke everywhere.

I find it strange that Alpinestars are still seen as the best boot in the USA (not sure about Germany and other countries). They used to be a brilliant boot back in the days they were made in Italy. But our rider survey showed plenty of complaints about the quality.

I noticed this too but only on the rear brake side. I have to move my foot to be more mid-foot instead of on the ball for braking and this wore out the sole on the right boot.

Interesting! It's usually the gear shift side that wears much quicker... I use Fastway pegs with the short cleats which really cuts down on sole wear.

@@crosstrainingenduro my Beta has fastways, I flatten the teeth a bit. The TM had SAM pegs which are blunted on the tips. I believe my situation is rocking back and forth on the pegs. Like both of you were saying from shifting and braking. Here in California there is a place that will resole boots. I haven't took the time to send them to them. I just end up buying new boots.

The guys getting 10 - 20 years out of their boots must be riding side-saddle with their feet up. My SG12's are approaching 2 years and the stitching has come away on the velcro strap and I've replaced a toe cap already. Mind you, I was going through a pair of Formas every 12 months. If the Gaerne's last another year, they're still better value at twice the price of the Formas. I find the SG12 toe box a bit narrow, especially if I walk in them much. Local bike shops are hopeless up here, I'd need to order my boots 12 months in advance to avoid resorting to double pluggers.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that velcro strap has been mentioned as an issue by a few riders but it seemed to be on older boots. How old were your boots that this last had this happen? Toe caps definitely come off too as per the other brands, I figured that was a consumable item but when you pay this much for a boot maybe they should come up with something longer lasting!

@@crosstrainingenduro They're dated 06/2020, but I've averaged more than 8 hrs in them every week for 18 months and a lot of that is pushing through lantana, scrub and rock gardens. I also should've mentioned that I broke a few toes when I hit tree a few months back. I hit it that hard that if I was wearing a lesser boot I'm confident I would've lost my foot... the boot shows no sign of damage. I've seen a mates foot bones come out through the top of his Oneal boot from a much lesser impact.

Great video as always bro! I still can't wait for someone else to buy me some Gaerne SG12s so I can see what all the hype is about! 🤣 I'm all set with what I'm currently rocking, and a new pair of Icon StormHawks on the way - So I can check out their BOA-system.. Anyways.. Question for ya [and anyone else reading this] As for 'niche boots' - in this case TRIALS: Gaerne has the "Balance" boot, and a LOT of people really give em' some serious praise! When looking around, I saw that AlpineStars also offers a trials boot called the "Tech T". I can't seem to find ANY info it it though.. There are a few random posts, and a few videos - But the videos: Either ads, terrible, or, both-combined. Does anyone have any real-world-experience with the A-Stars Tech-T??? I absolutely LOVE the A-Star Belize boots that I used to use, but, I should have went up a size.. MINT, but just don't fit 'right'. As always, Keep up the GREAT work, and Thank You For Sharing!! 🤘🙂 Sam -

Unfortunately there's always a trade off between protection on one side, then flexibility and light weight on the other, Sam. I have ridden enduro with trials boots. Super comfy, but I was so aware they would provide almost zero protection in a crash... they'd only prevent skin grazes.

@@crosstrainingenduro Thank you Very Much for the detailed explanation, and yup, I'm completely with ya.. I'll definitely look into 2 different sets of boots then - when the time comes! The Belize should do the trick for the mild enduro stuff.. The Thor Blitz LS - For bopping around town, and then I'll have to pop back in here w/ my thoughts on the Icon StormHawks when they arrive. As for more protective boots.. I have YOU [and the guys] that have helped to solidify the reputation and quality of the SG10/12 models. BIG Thanks again!! Sam -

Purchased the SG12’s 4 or 5 months ago due to reviews on this channel and others. All of the reviews that say “they run a size large? If you’re a size 13, buy a 12” - true. “They’re great for flat wide footed fucks” - true. “They’re stiffer than some other high end boots but offer more protection for the dummies that will crash in the rocks and get their ankles smashed” - confirmed true as well. I’ve got 17 hours on them and am a very happy camper and will absolutely not be looking for a different boot.

This does get mentioned quite a bit riders coming from a road, dual sport or adv background. You can get less protective boots which will have more movement. But I do know that over time it becomes a non-issue. You can see the really riders still have incredible control of the rear brake when doing stunts or gold class hard enduro.

I live in the USA northeast, the most densely populated area of the country. There is no "local dealer" within 500 miles around who stocks Gaerne boots. Most dealers selection of boots is pathetic in general. Floor space is a premium. They can't turn the place into a shoe store. Let's say they stock Fox, Falco, Forma, Sidi, Gaerne, Dainese, and AlpineStar. Each brand, lets say has 6 models of boots on average. Times size um, let's say 7 through 13 with 1/2 sizes. They would have to stock 504 pairs of boots just to have 1 of each size in stock.
