Shield Ligers are actually my favorite of the liger type zoids. Since its the first zoid piloted by Van in Chaotic Century, and is somewhat antithetical to what you'd expect an anime protagonist to use back then. It made extensive use of its energy shielding, its primary modes of attack are ranged weapons, the weapons themselves are relatively standard, and Van fought pretty dirty favoring guerilla tactics. At least compared to what other anime was on Cartoon Network at the time, which was mostly shonen. Chaotic Century on the other hand has themes and atmosphere of what you'd expect in a real robot anime like Mobile Suit Gundam.
@andrewowens44213 жыл бұрын
True, The Shield Liger is basically a standard tank in comparison to other, more extravagant, zoids. But the fact that it was used so effectively endeared it to my heart. You don't have to scream "main protagonist mech" in order to kick ass.
@DJWeapon83 жыл бұрын
@@andrewowens4421 exactly. Its a grunt mech for all intents and purposes.
@AirshipCanon23 жыл бұрын
@@DJWeapon8 It's more a high-end Grunt Mech though, closer to say Jegan than Guncannon or GM even. Nevertheless the Shield Liger is definitely a grunt mech-- you see entire columns of Republican Shield Ligers-- and their pilots aren't unskilled [Van has trouble activating the Shield of the Shield Liger early on, those grunt pilots do so in a synchronized fashion] Although, they're mostly used in the way Hollywood uses F-22s. As shit you would identify with, know is strong, and then watch get obliterated by the current major threat-- that mostly being Deathsaurer or Death Stinger's Charged Particle Cannon turning the entire column into molten metal and nothing else in one shot. Repeatedly. (Or fighting Raven and you get the off-screen screams as Raven makes mincemeat out of them in less than 3 minutes). Fun fact, if you pay attention to the side characters, the Blade Liger isn't necessarily uncommon, despite Van's Blade Liger being the only one shown on screen (until NCZ, where there's definitely multiple Blade Ligers). Van's of course is special since Zeke, but in theory, Zeke could make any Zoid special. Now stuff like Raven's Genosaur was full on Ace Mech (And Geno Breaker was truly one-of-a-kind in the anime-- all Zoids, even the big shit like Deathsaurer are "Mass Production" in Battle Story... fuck there's the Zarka Special Death Stinger kit- what's that? A kit for... of one of entire squadron of Death Stingers (Kit is one Zoid, there's an entire Zarka Squadron of them). Because you know, that's needed. Zi gets it: Mass Produce the Big Zam already.), and the fact that it was, was a relatively key point in Guardian Force, since "that's not just something you find lying around"-- the first major clue that Hiltz and his terrorist organization is a bit more well funded and outfitted than one might guess.
@elementxxrider2 жыл бұрын
@@AirshipCanon2 the irony is that while Gundam, Macross, Code Geass and more have this Trope of "The main character's ride is one of a kind", Zoids did something right in that sense: it made it with a logical sense. Think about it: what would ANY military in the world logically do if one of their newer units turns out to be more effective in combat than even that of their enemies: mass produce it. What did the Guylos empire did with the Geno Saurer to a degree it became a relatively common zoid in later zoid eras? Mass produce it because it was a REALLY good zoid. What did the Helic Republic did with the Blade Liger to a lesser extent given their lack of resources (but they still did it, that's what counts). Mass produce it and give it some extra equipment to boost it's performance! What did the Guylos Empire and the Helic Republic did with the Lightning Saix after it proved to be a good alternative to the already fast blade liger, which shows up more commonly at least once century later? Mass frickin produce it! Truthfully, the only 2 Zoids I can think of as one-of-a-kind, at least for a full on war period, are the following: the Geno Breaker and the Psycho Geno Saurer. Which brings back the point: why did the Brittania empire (in Code Geass) NOT mass produce the Gawain or Lancelot? No clue. Why did the Earth Federation decided to, instead of mass producing the RX-78 Gundam, tune it down and produce it as the RGM series or brought back from service rather old machines like the previous GM series? No clue. Zoids did another thing right: they highlighted the pilot's skills as a way to determine the true potential of a zoid. Raven and Van come as my primary example of this in 2 instances, going from less impressive to more impressive: 1.- an injured Van Flyheight piloted a captured Rev Raptor and was able to greatly decimate the enemy forces with the same machine most were piloting. 2.- A mentally unstable Raven massacred a republican base filled with Godos and other (greater) zoid types with a Godos. A frakking Godos. In Gundam terms it's like obliterating an Earth Federation base full of Jegans with a GM I In my honest opinion, although Gundam has set the basis for the boom of the Real Robot side of mechas... Zoids perfected it in Chaotic Century and Guardian Force. And they didn't got too off of the trope with New Century. Makes me sad that not many know of it as of late.
@WOLFxLORD Жыл бұрын
@@elementxxriderzoids is an ideal, and pretty unrealistic, scenario. Irl militaries operate more the way the federation in gundam does. Why didn't the federation mass produce its best, most armored and powerful mobile suit? Because it was expensive as fuck. So why bother mass producing that when an army of scaled down gms and disposable pilots were good enough to get the job done?

I love Zoids. I've built the base Liger Zero and just finished the Liger Zero Jager yesterday. I've still got the Schneider and Panzer to build. So a warning if you want to build the Jager, Schneider and Panzer they are just alternate armor variants of the Liger Zero (base) that are cannon in Zoids: New Century (if you haven't watched it). So you will be building the exact same under frame for all four versions, the only difference is the outer armor. Note: it's better to build each on their own inner frame, you can buy just the armor without a inner frame, but after building the Jager I was thankful that I didn't buy just the armor, I would not be bothered to switch out the armors for display.

finally a zoid review on your channel! they're awesome kits despite the age. some things, the "guns" you kept calling in the beginning are also boosters; it has two pilots bc i think they're supposed to be Van Flyheight and Fiona (but Fiona is not a pilot, she just tags along lol) but there is a Blade Liger AB Van Specification kit that comes with figures of Van, Fiona, the organoid Zeke, and a special Zoid Core that has Zeke fused in it, and they don't have accessories you can swap like gundams bc they're already on the unit. if anyone wants swappable features, you can get the base lige zero and the separate CAS/armors (Schneider, Jager, and Panzer -and there's also full kits for those) as for recommendations, the command wolf for the wolf type, berserk fury, actually get anything they're just amazing lol. and yes, you'll get what you paid for bc their awesome builds. the engineering is awesome, they're huge, and just fun to build. last thing, mecha if you're reading this. get the liger zero panzer and pair it with a full armor unicorn. missile/armory galore 👌 can't wait for the Jager review!

This is probably the best review for a Zoid I've ever seen, great job. Those fins on the shoulders are vents for the shield generator, the anime shows them opening up and venting steam when the shields are overloaded. With the runners, the Shield Liger was from 2006 and it's main body and legs come from that kit, the Blade Liger was released about a year later recycling some parts and the AB weapon set was released a year after that, first as a separate box and then as a combined set with what you have here and the anime accurate Van version (or "Bang" as they bizzarly call him on the box) which comes with small pre-painted in scale figures for Van, Fiona and their organoid Zeke. I've built 24 HMM Zoids so far and I've never needed to use glue on them but you can notice that Kotobukia really doesn't have the same kind of quality control and level of plastic injection engineering that Bandai has, which isn't a surprise as they're a vastly smaller company. The more recent designs are the best in terms of quality, I'd highly recommend getting the Gojulas, it's by far their best model and is the size, complexity (and cost) as a PG but is absolutely rock solid and looks amazing, especially if you can get one of the variants with the huge Gojulas Cannons.

I'm sure that with almost 800 comments someone has mentioned it, but just in case they haven't, this kit was actually released in February of this year, 2020. Interestingly it's the first one I've seen that actually recommends glue on any parts; the Blade Liger AB Bang Ver from 2009 had the exact same parts in the exact same place and did not recommend any glue. I guess as they started doing remakes they altered the instructions to add glue to parts that were prone to falling apart. I have the Gunsniper Linnon (Leena) Special and absolutely love it. No glue required there! Only complaint with that kit was that the instructions for the additional parts were just tacked onto the instructions for the base Gunsniper, which caused problems as some parts needed to be assembled before others.

Not Zoids related, but I’ve been building some Armored Core kits for a custom project, and I’m pretty impressed with them. There’s a lot of intricacy in their builds, and there’s metric fuckloads of color-separates plastic. Of the kits I’ve built so far, I think you’d like the AC017 Nine Ball Armored Core Ver. It’s quite solid save for two detail pieces on the core that really need gluing, the build is involved without being too tedious, and it was reissued last year, IIRC, so hopefully prices won’t be too high. It’s also in 1/72 scale, so you can compare it to the Blade Liger accurately.

When I had my zoids years ago, the ones where you put batteries in them, they came with those little dinosaur like characters that fuses with the zoid. And man, if that one is big, imagine a deathsaurer.

I built the Red Horn last year and loved it. Although it took a tumble off a top of a bookshelf and needs to be reassembled.

I got the bootleg version of the blade liger from wish and from what I could tell the quality is on par with the actual ones just going by KZbin vids. I bought 2 because of the price. The blue one like here and the other was the mirage (white with red trim version). I do have an official liger zero that I got in the mail the other day, once I build that I will be able to better compare the official quality with the bootleg. I did not have to glue the blue blade liger at all but on the white one, there were a couple places I added some glue because the joints that moved were pulling too hard on some of the other pieces.

Definitely have to recommend the Liger Zero Schneider. Only... two parts need to be glued? Everything else sticks really well. Mine sits on the bottom of my "Newest/Favorite kits" cabinet, and honestly it's such a heavy UNIT. I put it up higher and the glass beneath it cracked from its weight... So I had to reinforce, and then moved it to the bottm where there's more structure. All in all, either the Schneider or the Genosaurer/Genobreaker!

The last time i built a zoid was when it was battery powered with not much articulation and an easy build, this brings back childhood memories.

I started my model kit building with zoids but now I do gunpla. What you are saying is true there is a lot of plastic with these kits. That only makes them much more fun to put together. And if you want large kit look for a Gojulas kit or the rare Death Saurer hmm kits.

Back in the day I hade the shield lion then liger zero the raptor sniper and the big gorillas. Man those were good time waking up in the morning to some zoids

Try the Takara Tommy ZOIDS Wild ZW36 Rising Liger. It has a motor instead of wind-up. The movement is still reaaaallly basic, and because it moves the pose-ability is nill, but still a surprisingly beautiful kit, and the parts aren't in runners!

When it comes to Koto kits back in the early to mid 2000 they were actually ahead of Bandai in terms of Mech kits. Their Armored core line and zoid kits were far more detailed, and they used better plastic only caveat PLASTIC CEMENT. I still have my AC002 kit that still looks great, and yes I agree plastic cement kits are your friend! Small tip to people that cant afford the HMM line of Zoids good alternative is still the Takara Tomy line Although I consider it a build mechanical moving toy not a bad option most recent release they had is pretty recent 2018.

I already built this one too and just like you, I was blown away.... you got to build lighting saix, after building a liger zoid I think it would be nice change of pace to build other cat version, and lightning saix is the good choice. oh and also, lightning saix is already been in my wish list for about 7 years now, it is quite rare in my country and it would be great to see you review it...

Excellent video, brings back nostalgia loved every bit of it. My favorite zoids from the series were the red horn and dark horn. Triceratops my favorite dino so it was just natural to gravitate towards it. I have been wanting a kit myself but being upwards of $120-200 it's a hefty price I can't spend just yet.

I forgotten about my Liger Zero I had in a box in my closet. The parts are extremely loose and required a lot of glue. It does look awesome on the shelf.

Some good smaller Zoids that you can try are the Command Wolf models ( I would recommend the repackaged version that comes with all the weaponry available for it), the Shadow Fox, and Gun Sniper models

I had a motorized Liger Zero as a kid. It was pretty much a brick like the wind up one you showed so I had no idea Zoids could be this good.

I don't know a lot about the Zoid kits, but I know Zoids, so I'll just recommend some of my favorites that I know have a kit. Liger Zero, Liger Jaeger, Liger Schneider, Command Wolf, Command Wolf Irvine, Shadow Fox, Lightning Saix, Gun Sniper, Pteras, Storm Sworder.

great to see this, i requested this ages ago since i love this series too. I've been making all the Gundamium stuff you recommend!. as a Zoids fan, i recommend any of the main character machines for instances, Blader ligar AB Ban Ver, Zoid is same but comes with painted mini pilot characters and Ryuk? that lil zoid thing that goes in core, its pretty sick. Also some of the main machines have add ons or exchangeable backpack/Armament (Zeno Breaker, Berserk Fury) so check em out too.

I think the white parts on the upper portion of the feet are heat vents-or at least that's what I think I remember they did back in the old show, Chaotic Century.

I have a large collection of Zoids by Tomy when i was still a small child in the early 2000s and they are falling apart :') I remember getting the Bison and the clerk sold it to me by saying that the metallic parts which were the horns and hooves being from America. I got it when I was in the Philippines.

I watched a lot of the first zoids show on toonami (new century) and JUST recently built a Liger Zero model kit. I really like it and glad you liked the Shield Liger kit as well. May have to pick up a few others I've wanted to try, like the command wolf or shadow fox.
