About Dian Fossey: Secrets in the Mist
Dian Fossey: Secrets in the Mist is a three hour series for National Geographic Channel. The series tells the story of the life, work, murder and legacy of gorilla researcher Dian Fossey. The series will weave together three story strands. The first is the story of Dian's life and work - her childhood, her early days researching in Congo and her arrival in Rwanda for the 18 years she studied Mountain Gorillas. The second strand covers Dian's murder in Rwanda and the trial of her American co-worker Wayne McGuire, who was found guilty of her murder. Wayne fled Rwanda before the trial began but was convicted in absentia. He has always maintained his innocence. We intend to reopen the case by reviewing the evidence (if it can be located) and speaking with people who knew and worked with Dian and were involved in investigating the murder. Finally, we will tell the story of Dian's legacy by filming the Pablo troop of gorillas, which includes the silverback Cantsbee, the most successful gorilla ever known. The series will use archive footage and still images, interviews with people who knew and worked with Dian, specially shot footage and reconstruction to tell the life story of Dian Fossey and the aftermath of her murder.

What have we gained by studying these gorillas? What applications can be made to mankind? Is this knowing for the sake of knowing or is it knowing for another purpose?

We got to know one of our closest relatives. We learned how to respect them as they deserve since before Dian's studies, they were treated like monsters or trophies. Also the research began with the desire of wanting to know more about mankind by studying the creatures we evolved from.

It dispelled the myth of gorillas as savage bigfoot-like creatures. It was once thought that gorillas carried off women into the jungle to mate, fought elephants with clubs, walked on two legs and built huts. It was also thought that they decapitated people. This was debunked first by Carl Akeley, and then by George Schaller & Dian Fossey.

@johncoontas7212 it could be said that there is a lot of research that cannot benefit anyone out rightly or immediately and which is therefore useless as there is a need to cure widespread diseases, solve political problems, prevent war, feed the hungry etc etc etc. Of course not everything that is studied "benefits" everyone in some definite quantifiable way whether it is researching wild gorilla behavior or researching how mosquitoes mate and what societies they create and live in. But the knowledge of these things in the greatest wider-picture sense are useful and adds to the greater knowledge of science and facts and the way nature and the world works. Yes you can easily argue that it is more important to give food to homeless people in the streets than go out in the wild to watch wild animals eat, sleep and escape predators. No way to stretch resources and everything else to cover every dilemma there is in the world. There are archives of manuscripts and writings in museums and historical societies that most people will never pay attention to, only people deeply interested in entomology, or astronomy, or oceanology. Generations of people will come and go before any of it "benefits" them. Yet human dilemmas cannot be some reason to limit all other endeavors. It actually would be counter productive and self defeating.

No one could've done what Dian Fossey did. She became cold to blend in w/ the Gorillas and the African people of Rwanda. That same coldness became her undoing.
