Yooo, sick find! On the grate, you can also have Mario look upwards in Y cam to charge backward speed faster fwiw 5:20 Sorry to crush your dreams but the weird math that makes PUs a thing in SM64 no longer happens in Sunshine, so there’s nothing to travel to. Even then, true out of bounds kills your speed in Sunshine, so you couldn’t even get close to building up PU speed (hover storage is still the better option in that regard since Mario doesn’t try to go anywhere until you get off the mesh)

What's rather interesting is that the Blooper Method of building up speed in Sunshine is nearly identical to what's known as the "C^ Trick" in Super Mario 64, which allows you to build up a large amount of positive or negative horizontal speed by going into Zoomed Camera Mode while running near-parallel onto a slippery slope. As others have mentioned, you can do a similar thing with riding a shell.

Well, the slope slide mechanic is also present in 64. Hyper-speed-sliding is what occurs when Mario needs to slide off of and object when it is too steep to climb. By positioning Mario almost parallel to the slope and performing an action like sliding (holding the joystick in on direction then the opposite) you can lock Mario in a sliding state so that he moves forward and the slopes fail-safe pushes him into a state with negative speed, his speed will be updated but his state won't (remember, hes already in sliding state so he cant stomach slide or butt slide) thus giving him more negative speed and keeping him in the same place (other than moving backwards along the wall). using other mechanics it is possible to trap Mario under a ceiling to built up (almost) infinite speed. That to too long to write.

To have another SM64 speed building comparison, there actually is a method just like this in SM64. First, ride a shell up a slippery slope, then once Mario starts slowing down, turn so that Mario is facing away from where you want to go, and slightly facing uphill. Sadly, you can't use an angle of 0, but an angle of 1 is the next best thing. Mario will build up speed and stay on the shell once he gets off. This is actually possible RTA as well. My favorite and the simplest setup is on the second star of Bom-omb Battlefield. By the cannon, there's a shell and a slippery slope that spans most of the map's width. Here is a video of the glitch in action, as I'm not the greatest at explanations: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXa0c5aYa8SoarM That video is a TAS and in Snowman's Land, but it's the same trick. TL;DR get shell go nyooom

parallel universes in 64 always confused me. like, are they a developer intended thing? or just a weird side effect of something else?
@fourteevee5 жыл бұрын
It's a side effect of how collision is detected! Pannen made several videos on the topic but of particular note: - position is stored as a float (the maximum value of which is very large) - collision is NOT detected directly alligned with the position, instead, it is stored in a short int (a very small number... 16,000ish if I'm not mistaken) - by exceeding that 16000 value for colision checking, it wraps around back to -16000 and eventually back to 0, meaning your position can be very far from the map but you still technically collide with the main map because colision detection loops forever Due to these things, PUs exist! All a PU is is you colliding with that looping main map colision very far from the main map, rather than actual objects out there. Hope that helps!

If you want to get super pedantic, SM64 also does use a float for Mario's position - it's just that for floor detection specifically, it gets truncated to 16-bit integers for whatever reason.

@AverageTreyVG5 жыл бұрын
I never actually knew they were vertical as well... ye rocket storage would be much better for that

I thought rocket storage let you build up vertical speed at a linear rate. Double the number of storages, double your speed. Triple your storages, triple your speed.
@AverageTreyVG5 жыл бұрын
that's tru - I didn't realize this til after I made the voiceover.
@SSM24_3 жыл бұрын
It might feel more than that because a linear increase in speed actually gives you a quadratic increase in maximum height, not just a directly proportional one. Storing 2x, 3x, or 4x the number of rockets will indeed give you 2x, 3x, or 4x the amount of speed, but that speed will give you 4x, 9x, and 16x the total height respectively.

It is not negative speed. Speed is your speed, you cannot have negative speed nor time, however, you can have negative velocity. Velocity is your speed over time, and your negative velocity would be you traveling backwards. Your speed will always be positive, but if you travel backwards your velocity would become the negative. And there is not deceleration while we’re at it, you can accelerate negatively, which just means you are changing speeds by slowing down. Acceleration is the change of your velocity, which is your speed over time.
