The better they are bred, the better they are trained and the better you ride them, will make for a better gaited horse. Buy for Temperament, Safety and Gait, Not for Color or Looks.

Gaye I have a difficult question that you may or may not have an opinion on. A few weeks ago my horse was shot in the middle of his right rump. The vet I took him too said it would be less traumatic for the horse to leave the bullet in, we're not sure that it was a bullet but we can't imagine what other thing could have caused the wound. Anyway today no infection and it still oozes a little blood but I'm worried because he's not really putting weight on that leg. He is a Tennessee Walking horse that I adopted from a rescue. Not sure on age but we think he's 2 or 3. He gaited well on his own before the injury but I am afraid that this will really effect that. I just want him to heal well enough to have no pain while walking. Is it possible he will only gait on the noninjured legs? Is there anything you can recommend for me to use as therapy to make sure his gaits are comfortable for him again?

I would want an X-ray to see what exactly it is and where it is or at least an ultrasound. If it's not by the bone or nerves, it should heal and recover but that can take some months to get back to normal. Then it should go back to gaiting as it previously did, but only time can tell.
