I read a story one time where a professional performer sung or spoke a passage of scripture. The audience gave him a standing ovation and cheers galor because his performance was so amazing. Then he went backstage and a little old gentleman that was a stage hand or custodian walked out onto the stage and spoke or sung the same passage of scripture. When he finished, there wasn't a dry eye in the audience. The older gentleman walked backstage and the professional performer met him and said "sir, you got the greatest form of applause any performer could ever receive. You moved the people into silent tears. How did you do that???" The old gentleman said "you know all the words, but I know the one who wrote them.". And I feel like there are many that perform this song "because they know words" and perform them well, but Mark knows who the one wrote the song.

I grew up knowing Mark Lowry's name as a Christian comedian. I knew he was involved with the Gaither Vocal Band, and had done some writing, but somewhere along the way I forgot that he wrote "Mary, Did You Know?" It wasn't until I started an Advent Bible reading plan going through the songs of Christmas that I discovered this was his song. It's always been one of my favorites.

Of all the renditions I have heard of your song, Mary did you know, I love yours the best. You sing with so much feeling and deep emotions. Everyone else either sings it to fast or doesn't put any emphasis on the areas that need it to make someone FEEL the importance of the gift God has given us through his Son. The importance of him being our Lord and Savior and that MARY KNEW she was bringing us the Lord and Savior of mankind. The feelings and emotions of knowing that had to be a tremendous emotional experience to Mary. And you put that emotional feeling into the song when you sing it. I don’t believe she knew all at the time of his birth. It was a progressive revelation over the years. It would have been unbearable as a mother if she knew the end from the beginning. God in his wisdom protected her as I know he protects us.

The pianist is Anthony Burger. At 8 mo. old Anthony fell on the furnace grate and he suffered 3rd degree burns on both hands. His parents were told he would never be able to use his hands. God had other plans for him. He started playing the piano at 3 years of age. There are a few versions of Anthony giving his testimony.
