Lindsay Ellis has a great video about how hollow these "progressive" ideas are in these Disney live-action remakes are. About how they're surface level and don't meaningfully change or affect the story. An example is Belle being an inventor in Beauty and the Beast and how absolutely nothing comes from this in the story. As for Snow White being a revolutionary who knows what this will do and if it will be any different than the Charlize Theron movie.

After seeing the clip of that interview with Rachel and Gal at 2:54, it’s weird that Rachel was the only one who got any hate. Yes, Rachel did start the comment with the whole “It’s not 1937” quip, but Gal was the person who made the comment about “she’s not going to be saved by the prince” and seemed to be the one to kinda prompt the rest of Rachel’s answer (which I think is understandable, given she’s a younger actress and potentially looks to guidance to a more experienced co-star like Gadot in interviews). What you said about the little person debacle is exactly how I felt about it. No one can tell me that everyone at Disney simply misinterpreted what Dinklage said and made the move to something more “palatable.” It feels as if they heard his critique, figured, “well if we chuck real little people from production that’s fewer ADA regulations we’ll have to comply with”, and ran with it. How could you get a job as a creative executive who makes decisions that change the course of an entire movie’s production and NOT be able to understand what Peter Dinklage actually meant? If they really cared then perhaps there’d be more exploration into the lives of the dwarves, what dwarves live outside the seven we know? How do they communicate and interact with the world beyond their forest and their mines? What could be done to make them more than just the supporting cast of Snow White? It’s so frustrating because the people behind these productions are being paid the money to come up with these ideas, but they can’t because it MIGHT affect the fucking bottom line.

This era for children’s media in general has been crap since 2019 when Andi Mack got cancelled, Cameron Boyce died tragically and the live action Lion King became the highest grossing “animated” movie of all time made by a filmmaker who doesn’t even call it animated! At least Inside Out 2 outgrossed them this year! Personally, the market of the industry that’s suffering the most compared to any other market are family friendly media. From KZbin disabling comment sections of even the oldest videos that just so happen to have no sex, violence or cuss words, some may even be old enough that adults would only know about them. Or Victor Zsasz or whatever his name is influencing companies into purging talented people’s hard work from availability just to save money, many of which being animated and/or kid-friendly. Or tv networks, cable or streaming, making no effort advertising or even preserving their content including content meant for families or at least the better ones and replacing them with either content that does the bare minimum or doesn’t even try to improve that gets rewarded for multiple renewals (Young Dylan) or revivals/reboots/sequels of their parent’s’ favorite shows. Or at the most, older sibling’s’ favorite shows (The Really Loud House, Teen Titans Go). I don't care how excited I was for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place or Phineas & Ferb or Alice in the Palace or The Fairly OddParents A New Wish or other revivals including from Cartoon Network. The originals matter just as much not just for movies but for media altogether. I’m in my late 20s and I feel terrible for kids right now because adult executives blatantly hate anything they can write off as kids stuff like animation, even if it’s for adults. And these live action remakes aren’t helping. At this rate, I’m expecting it to get worse for a long time before it'll get better.

The sad thing is, Rachel Zegler can be a talented actress, and it shows when you give her the right scripts to work with. She just REALLY needs to fire her media coach, or at least get a competent one, because there are times she speaks up on things she really shouldn't. It doesn't do her career any favors when she blurts half the stuff she says out. I guess we'll see what happens with her career in the end.

I can’t help but think back to that Variety article that came out about toxic fandom in fantasy and other adjacent media, like Rings of Power, Star Wars, and Bridgerton when situations like this come up. Studios are as money-driven as ever, and they care more about what serves their bottom line than caring either about the quality of the art or about their actors. They’re hiring diversely now because it’s “trending,” but they do nothing to protect the actors from abuse from the public when a property is “bad,” and those actors become shields the executives use against criticism so they can continue to put out more of the same. Rachel Zegler needs media training, for sure, but the gist of some of what she was saying isn’t inconsistent with the general branding with the live-action remakes, pushing (to varying degrees of success) updates to make them more “modern” that other studios may have already done. Disney should be getting way more flack than her. Same with pretty much every situation where people piled on a BIPOC or other minority actor who allegedly “ruined” their favorite movie or tv show.

Hansel and Grethel, for example, it follows all the plot points Disney are writing about recently - it's about family love and not about romance and it have a strong female lead, who ends up ending the villain. Loved the video! 1:30 I agree with most of your arguments in this video, but I still think that deffending Rachel’s casting is not the best thing to do. The way I see it (and this is coming from a Mexican woman) is that if there were to be a latino live action remake, like Encanto or even Coco, I certainly wouldn’t appreciate the casting to be completely opposite from what most of the film’s characters look like (white and from non-latino origins). And if there were to be a Princess and the Frog Disney remake, it certainly wouldn’t be well received to cast a white person for the main roles. So why is it okay to cast a latina in a movie that is talking about European culture? It seems a bit hypocritical to me. If they want to cast a darker skinned european person, then that’s fine, at least they would identify more with the culture they’re representing. I’m not saying that Zegler is to blame, nor is this the only case where this has happened. This is purely the executive’s fault, but I don’t think it’s something to defend at all. But yeah anyways, I wasn’t even planning to see this movie, haven’t seen a Disney remake in years. The blatant way they are using supperficial social justice aspects to defend their lazy nostalgia cash grabs is gross.

I have to disagree on your take on Snow White being played by a Latina. Her character is literally defined by her skin tone and I'm aware how toxic that beauty standard is, but there are so many ways they can modernize it without replacing what makes Snow White "Snow White". Besides Disney's diverse casting feels extremely performative and became a scapegoat for people to not realize the movies are bad because of the soulless direction, not the casting.

I have no problem with a Latina Snow White, or a Snow White who has a bigger purpose than just being poisoned and then rescued by the prince. There have been plenty of Snow Whites before Rachel's version (including Kristin Kreuk who's not white), and no one had a problem with it. The changes in this movie feel politically charged to most people. And this version is a direct adaption of a beloved specific cartoon, not another original interpretation. With both live-action Ariel and live-action Snow white, it feels like Disney is saying the original versions were not politically correct enough, or good enough at all, and these new versions are what the characters were always supposed to be like. I thought Halle Bailey was lovely as Ariel (even though I think the movie could have been better). But Rachel Zegler as Snow White? Well, once you criticize the original so heavily, there's no way to win fans over. And her Snow White is simply as not as revolutionary as she thinks that it is. Kristen Kreuk, Lily Collins, Ginnifer Goodwin aka the best live-action Snow white, and even Kristen Stewart have all already done the "groundbreaking" stuff with Snow White. Rachel's Snow White is late to the groundbreaking party with its 2016 girlboss feminism. The trailer genuinely looks like it was AI-generated. Disney could actually unite everyone if they were to shelve this movie forever and just admit that it didn't work out as intended.

Also her smiling a little too much about Andrew Burnap possibly being cut from the movie because “It’s Hollywood baby,” was just ick. I think Kayla really downplayed it as “oh people don’t like her because she’s Latina and outspoken,” meanwhile Jenna Ortega is BOTH of those things playing one of the most iconic “pale” girls and she hasn’t lost any steam. Some clueless people may not want her as Wednesday because she’s Latina but the majority digs her just fine.

I cannot say as I do have a particularly puritanical view of who should play Snow White. But when a writer provides such a vivid description of a physical characteristic, the choice of whether or not to honour that characteristic in adaptations is more of an aesthetic one than racial. I mean, many "white" people aren't even as pale skinned as might be imagined from :"skin as white as snow". Certainly just about anyone who is capable of getting a tan might not even stay that way all year round. US concepts of "race" don't necessarily align with those of other countries anyway but it is also a bit artificial for the focus (by both defenders and detractors alike) to be on the Latina aspect when the other half is Polish. I'm not sure exactly what the make up of her Columbian side is likely to be but honestly as far as any of this matters in the slightest (really not much at all), she'd probably be considered "white" if born in Europe with that parentage. As for her skin tone, I'm not even sure what that is naturally but some pictures do make her look relatively pale. So presumably there is some tanning and'/or make up involved in tweaking it one way or the other. So they probably could even make the aesthetic choice with Zegler to match the accepted description if they wanted to. But the emphasis is more on leaning into her "non-white" heritage for diversity reasons, so that seems unlikely. At the end of the day though, if Disney themselves are going to cast someone for cynical, racially motivated reasons then they can certainly expect people to comment on that. And it is unreasonable to accuse everyone who does so of being a racist. The moral posturing of a company like Disney over these subjects is quite tiresome, especially when they only have to release a movie somewhere like China for us to see how insincere it all is.

This is all so, SO exhausting, and 90% of the "discussions" regarding this film are blatantly in bad faith. I have no interest in seeing this film (have never seen a Disney live action remake and intend to keep it that way), but the vitriol people are able to summon whenever it is brought up is so wild to me. The hate for Rachel Zegler is wildly disproportionate to anything she has said or done -- WHO CARES that she was scared of Snow White as a kid? Disney saw an opportunity to cut labour costs (which they love to do!) and removed little people from the film -- the idea that any of this is Dinklage's fault is such a braindead take, but yep let'sblame pretty much the only big actor who is a little person rather than the megaconglomerate! Gal Gadot really doesn't have any business being in this film for several reasons, and the fact that Zegler (and Dinklage, who isn't even in the film!) are getting more heat than HER tells you everything you need to know about the intelligence of the average American.

Being mixed, I take offense at the Aryan jab. I find this kind of casting highly disrespectful. When race-swapping occurs, especially in ways like this, it's telling that particular race, "You're not worth a story about your history and culture. So here's a place in a White story." I mean, they made Ariel Black and gave her a Latin dad and multicultural sisters. Um. Ariel's whole family was the same race in the original. Why didn't we get an entirely Black family? Why is this acceptable for folks? It's the bare minimum! It's laziness! It's for a remake that isn't even going to be any good! Why would anybody want this kind of representation? It's absolute bullplop. Also, her name is Snow White because her skin was as white as snow. It's like naming Han and Leia's son Ben when that was Luke's son's name, and for good reason! Changing who the name belongs to completely changes the meaning behind the name.

I dont agree with Peter at all. He can say that as he has conquered everything in Hollywood. Unfortunatelly, people with his condition dont have many chances in acting, and being seen in a Hollywood megaproduction could be a first step. Yes the movie was called "Snowhite and the 7 dwarfs", but in the movie Snowhite calls them "little people" and only the evil queen calls them dwarfs. And in the original tale, they are supossed to be some kind of forest magical creatures, but their size and height and such is necer mentioned, the idea we have about that story was fixated by the Disney movie, who decided that they should be 7 dwarfs and be on a mine and those things that are not in the original tale. I thought those 7 magical people looked ridiculous im sorry, maybe it was the overall vibe, the clothes are all over the place, the characterizations are not special...idk it is a disaster.

Dinklage is not the only person who is allowed to speak for the little people community, I as a little person myself could have made money being in this film, and others also, its not our fault or problem that we can be only in or seen to be cast as munchkins, monkeys, and dwarfs or fairy's or half lings. it is what it is, and his remake of serrano sucked and it was because the lead character was short and the score was bad. somethin things art not made for every one. get used to it. I'm proud to be an elf and a munchkin mayor and a flying monkey. it means you always will be hired for jobs. We are not all that lucky to get Game of thrones Dinklage.

it's kinda like he's not letting other little people from the community achieve success in Hollywood, he should know better and unfortunately building a career in the acting industry in already hard, this could've open doors for many actors

The whole "white as snow" is also a literary trope meaning that she is pure and good. Also, Snow White was the daughter of a king. She was snow white because she never worked. Being pale and with no tan was considered a status symbol of the elite.

NGL if their first animated movie becomes their last live action remake that’d be pretty poetic. Assuming of course the execs accurately diagnose the issue as low quality nostalgia slop instead of scapegoating the minorities they gave breadcrumbs to…

Also, if people want to dialogue with the original Grimm Brothers' story: 1) There was no kiss 2) SW is awakened because the apple falls out of her throat 3) There is no magic at all except the magic mirror 4) The narrator is telling a story in the 19th century about a feudal period 200-300 years before 5) No where is it ever said specifically where and in what country this took place 6) The ability of the Queen Regent to live in that huge castle all that time with the heir is pretty iffy 5) A modern invention from the 30's film is to make the queen "ethnic" looking - that also did not exist in the original story. Also, should Snow White and everybody be speaking High Middle German? because that's where it all supposedly took place. People get angry about the most random shit.

I like Zegler in the performances I've seen. I don't think she's a bad actress. I know it might feel inauthentic to who she is as a person, but how difficult is it to say 'I love the original, and I'm excited to be a part of the remake' it doesn't seem that hard.

You can tell Disney doesn't actually give a shit about feminism or progressive values when they are letting a 23 year old Latina woman be torn apart online for years as a rep for a movie she is just staring in but has no power around the casting, special effects, script, etc....

The 1937 film is beautiful and lovely, but Snow White gets overshadowed by side characters almost immediately. It might as well be called The Seven Dwarves and the Evil Queen ft. Snow White. While I am morbidly curious about the movie, I am also interested in how the film will tell Snow White differently. It could be an interesting take on the fairytale (let’s be real Disney never follows the original stories), but it’s most likely just gonna be shallow corporate feminism to pretend to be progressive. I don’t think it’ll bomb (critically), but I wouldn’t put it past people to review bomb it. I think it’ll just be another mid remake because Disney hates taking risks, but they love using their leading actresses as their meat shields. It’s so sad that they refuse to stamp out misinformation spread about Zegler, especially her election comments and how a bunch of people are saying she’s threatening harm on Trump supporters (which she isn’t). Also I love how people will go to war for fictional characters while trashing real people who have something to say about them. Idk if I have to say this, but Snow White isn’t real. She won’t thank anyone for tearing down Zegler to defend her honor and end wokeness or whatever. The Disney Princess subreddit LOVES to sing praises to Snow, Cinderella, and Aurora for being kind and optimistic despite their terrible circumstances, but they will be petty about Zegler (but sure she’s the mean girl narcissist) and basically do the opposite of what they praise the original three for. Anyway, hopefully Zegler can have a good career. Succeeding in the arts is hard, and I’m glad she’s doing that. Hopefully the internet mob won’t snuff out her star. Side note: considering what is being said about this Snow White and the absolute rage that she’ll become a leader (again she isn’t real and bends to the whims of the writers and producers and executives), people will 100% call Mulan (animated one) a pick-me or NLOG if that movie came out today.

say what you will about rachel zegler she is actually a decent actress and can sing and puts effort in her acting. She also has acting credibility. Her acting in the ballad of songbirds and snakes was good. Gadots acting in the trailer was the weak link. In past disney films the villains are all great actors/actresses. How was Gadot even casted for this film??? I only remember her in wonder woman which her acting was also bad and her role in fast and furious where she was also the weakest link.
