Why would you hide a fleet in an asteroid belt like that between earth and mars?? That would be stupid as ... (you imagine the most stupid thing for yourself). First, the Asteroid belt is so far away from the planets that it would take too much time to be effective to hide defense forces or to trap or stop an incoming fleet; the asteroids are not densely packed - not even the rings of Saturn are and that would make them a bad place to hide anyway. Star systems like our solar system are more or less all in a plane - and if you come to see, attack or destroy the third planet, you just come out of hyperspace or FTL flight not in the plane but above or below the target, not taking the risk of crossing the asteroid belt without any need or passing other planets where the defenders may have factories for weapons and battleships. Then, ... guerilla warfare? You would need millions of spies and traitors to infiltrate the system, including a detailed knowledge of the technology, the programs, the options of taking over highly advanced computer systems that are safeguarded by defense mechanisms and guardian programs. Do the authors have any idea how big the galaxy is and how vast the interstellar space or even the intergalactic space is (for the stories with empires spanning over several galaxies with billions of stars and probably millions of habitable planets and hundreds of thousands of intelligent species scattered and expanding over these?
