Yeah, seriously, the first time I saw this I was amazed, still am: but when you hear the flashback memories of episode 3 - holy shit - I had chills the first time I saw that part. This "reimagined" version - where it integrates a fight between the wise but past his prime Jedi Knight against his former apprentice who's now far more powerful than he once was. More over, the fact that the two characters fighting styles were perfectly replicated is masterful. This is the Vader we didn't see in the movies - this was the Vader from the comic books which show what he got up to as Vader after order 66 was executed and he began hunting down the remaining Jedi against the rebellion. After Vader was placed in that suit, which - by the way - limited both his powers and his mobility: he had to completely change his fighting style from when he was a Jedi Knight. Between the change in his mobility combined with having fallen to the dark side his fighting became far more brutal, a lot more power in his strikes and direct assault rather than how flowing and fluid his style was when he saw him in episodes 2 and 3. For the people who never read the comics, the only time you really saw Vader like this was only in very brief glimpses from Empire strikes back. This clip of him fighting in such a violent and unrelenting frontal assault fashion is the Vader most passive Star Wars fans have never seen. You did incredible work my dude, utterly incredible.

I'll always say this to anyone looking for a different perspective on the Prequels.... GO WATCH THE 'NO CHEESE' EDITS. The tone of the movies without all that childish 'humor' and Jar Jar and other shit that never impacted the story/characters.... it makes you realize how dark the prequels are. Without that stupid humor distracting you, you are very aware of the noose slowly tightening around the Jedi's collective throats. I truely believe Lucas noticed how dark the tone was without the childish humor and then added in all the fart jokes and Jar Jar cringe to try to make it more kid-friendly. I mean.... it IS a trilogy essentially about the protagonist in heavy plot armor saying "fuck your rules. I choose evil if it means not living by YOUR rules". Its pretty dark for a "kids film" when you think about that

They went above and beyond with this. I have the Hal 9000 edits of the prequels which make those MUCH better. And this fight scene was one and only thing I wanted changed in the entire original trilogy and now I got it. GOOD TIMES!

@@Theosake I disagree. I think people like myself knew there were good movies in the prequels but couldn't fully enjoy them because they were buried by unnecessary dialogue and exposition. If Lucas would've had a better editing team with him back then maybe we might have gotten movies closer to these versions. Sometimes more for the sake of more isn't better. These versions just tell a more streamlined and focused version than the originals and now I'm much happier that Lucas made them because I can fully enjoy them. You like you're versions and I'll like mine and we can both be happy.

Back then, the lightsabers were basically reflective tape on a spinning plastic tube. The tube can shatter easily. So they couldn't do the elaborate sword fighting they can do now. They probably didn't have the budget for it.

I believe it was wooden dowel that would spin with the reflective tape on. This was before plastic because the sort of thing sparring weapons were built from and so durable. They didn't have the budget to keep replacing the rotating rods. Plus Guinness was in his 60s at that time and they couldn't afford stunt doubles so he had to just go with it against a much larger man in David Prowse.

I thought I heard it was a glass tube. But whatever material it was, it was: A) Expensive & B) very fragile! So fragile that they were told to NEVER connect with each others weapon! They only had a few spares & if the ALL broke they could not be replaced (SW was already on a shoe string budget)! That's why there were 'lightning flashes' when their sabers "struck" in the original theatrical release. It was to hide the fact that they never came within 3-6 inches on touching during that entire fight!

If I recall, George Lucas said something about the pace of the duel between Obi Wan and Vader. Contrary to what you see in the prequels, Vader and Obi Wan are both old men and can’t really pull off the same stuff and fight as fast in the sequels. It really wasn’t about the durability of the rods, it more about age.

@@slmb_b In one of the way older making of specials Lucas talks about how he wanted the sword fighting of of swashbuckling movies but in the canon he had imagined initially, it took such physical strength aided by the force to wield the lightsaber that fast movements were physically impossible for a jedi. Still dont know how that makes sense, but isn't sci fi at its core a bit nonsensical?

George Lucas couldn't do it like this in the original back then because one, they didn't have the cgi and special effects back then to do it and two, David Prowse (The actor who originally played Darth Vader) was a big, strong man and he had to fight Alec Guiness. A old man who didn't have any strength or agility to keep up with David. They also only had shitty reflecting sticks that weren't designed to be hit against eachother hard or they would shatter. Neither actor were professional fencers or sword fighters either so they had to be extremely careful with their strikes, particularly David who could have easily hurt Alec with a mistimed or misjudged strike. This is why the original fight is stunted, slow and not flashy.

roger Rumble Well, technically they were both old, so my own coverup guess is that age had to do with the pacing of their duel. Another thing is that back then flashy sword duels weren’t really a thing, so a lot of duels were pretty slow paced. No clue about Bruce Lee movies, anyways.

One thing I just absolutely adore about this video is how they managed to maintain their fighting styles, despite this being much more acrobatic and fast paced. If you watch the movements closely, you can see that Obi Wan is on the defensive for almost the entire fight, much like episode 4's original duel. I was worried that, with this, they would have Obi Wan flipping around everywhere and do things that he shouldn't conceivably do. But no, it maintains realism (well, Star Wars realism anyway lol), all they seemed to do was add actual choreography that matched each person's combat style, boost effects to add more force powers and environmental damage, and make edits to their newly made footage to make it run smoothly alongside episode 4. Honestly, in my own personal canon, this is the actual fight that happened, and I am sure this is more akin to what the original vision was.

The reason why Episode 4's lightsaber battle was very simple was because David Prowse, Darth Vader's actor, lied to George Lucas that he could do sword figh for the role, but he doesnt. So that's why the choreography was toned down by a lot. In Episode 5 and 6, they hired a swordsman stunt double to do the lightsaber instead of David Prowse.

I heard it was Alec Guinness that lied about being able to fence. Prowse on the other hand got replaced by a stunt double in the sequel duels because he kept breaking the props in episode 4. Too much of a giant body builder.

@@talyn5304 Ah, man, I could go on and ON about how awesome this was! Also, Vader's, "Then I will show you the true nature of the Force!" and HE DOES. People often think of the Jedi/Sith as just "Lightsabers, lightsabers, lightsabers" but Anakin/Vader possessed absolutely terrifying power in the Dark Side of the Force; he was a MONSTER Force User, too. Just look at "Jedi: Fallen Order." At the end of the game, after the last boss, you DO NOT fight Vader! All you can do - with good reason - is RUN as that monster chases after you!

The original fight was the way it was primarily for 2 simple reasons...1) Alec Guinness was in his early 60s and 2) Bob Anderson couldn't move very well in the 1977 Vader suit.

if i remember correctly they where basically covered in glass dust, (yes glass DUST) which is super dangerous especially if you breath it in. there are part during the fights where if you look closely where the blades accidental clash little puffs of white powder, you can see for yourself if you look up Ben Kenobi vs Darth Vader - A New Hope [1080p HD] slow the playback speed to 0.25 and go to 0:35 as Vader pushes the blade away a small puff of white can be seen. that is the one that I find is most noticeable

if I remember rightly the original fight was so slow and stiff because they were using glass tubes so they couldn't connect with each other, but I did hear there some behide the scene footage with actors practicing with wooden sticks and they're were really getting stuck into it.
