Galatians 4:17 “Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may have zeal for them. Paul tells them, just as I’m telling you, that there are pastors and teachers out there who will tell you anything in order to build “their” kingdom, to gain converts. But if their message isn’t helping you to be “transformed” into the image of Christ then their message is of no value, period! Ezekiel 22:26 “Her priests do violence to my law and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common; they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean; and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.” The self appointed leaders of today are simply teaching traditions handed down to them by the forefathers and the leaders of their doctrine. But in reality, they have no real understanding of what it means to follow Christ, just as Christ warns us of the religious leaders of His time. Matthew 15:14 “Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” This provides another confirmation that it’s not about “conversion” to religion, but salvation comes through “transformation”. These are disciples of Paul who would have already made a confession of faith in Christ. So why is it that Paul was so concerned if a confession of faith was all that’s needed to be saved? This is where the very dangerous doctrine of “Once Saved, Always Saved” is demolished. Paul himself, the teacher of salvation by grace though faith expresses to his own disciples they were in fear of losing their salvation having strayed from their trust in Christ, “The Word”. This is why the enemy doesn’t go after “the lost”, he goes after the found. And one of the easiest ways for the enemy to attack is from inside, by lifting up ignorant and unstable teachers who are filled with pride and willing to “scratch the inching ears” in order to build their own kingdoms. May you be blessed in your pursuit of truth!

In Pastor David's commentary, he explains how the "plucked out your own eyes" is an exaggeration or hyperbole that Paul used to express how grateful and appreciative the Galatian people were, that they would do something very extreme and self-sacrificing if it could help Paul at all. It is not meant to approve of or suggest anyone plucks out their eyes or to mean that plucking out eyes is positive. From Enduring Word commentary on Galatians 4: enduringword.com/bible-commentary/galatians-4/ b. _My trial that was in my flesh you did not despise or reject_ : Even though Paul was not a great example of strength and power because of his physical infirmity, the Galatians still received him, and they received him honorably. They embraced Paul so generously that they would have _plucked out [their] own eyes and given them to_ Paul if that could somehow meet his need. i. “Obviously, a plucked-out eye would be a gift nobody could use, but Paul’s point is that his converts had been ready to do anything for him in those early days.” (Morris) ii. This leads some to believe that Paul’s physical infirmity had something to do with his eyes. Noted Greek scholars such as Wuest, Rendall, and Robertson believe that the nuances of the Greek text indicate that Paul’s physical infirmity was an eye problem. Galatians 6:11 - where Paul makes reference to large letters written with his own hand - may also support this idea. iii. But Cole rightly notes: “Those who see here a proof that Paul suffered from ophthalmia, or some similar eye-disease, are welcome to do so. Certainly with smoky fires, no chimneys, and oil lamps, one would expect a high incidence of eye trouble in the first-century Mediterranean world. To one who had spent years poring over crabbed Hebrew tomes the risk might well be greater. But again we have no proof.” iv. But the real point here is that despite whatever Paul’s infirmity was, the Galatians did not _despise or reject_ him. “As physical infirmity and illness were regarded by Jews and Gentiles alike as a symbol of divine displeasure or punishment, there would have been a natural temptation for the Galatians to despise Paul and reject his message.” (Fung) This is exactly what the Galatians did not do. Even though Paul seemed weak and afflicted, they embraced him and responded to his message of grace and God’s love.
