It really helps to know clinical psychology when you read this CRAP Paul is diagnosed with Schizophrenia and Malignant Narcissism, post mortem. He had a schismatic abberantly salient moment of pure psychosis and when he came back, he saw this movement as an opportunity to exploit people for his own clout. THAT IS ALL THAT HAPPENED WITH PAUL. @@christophergibson7155 Welp, so did Peter, where's the love for him? But in all seriousness, I don't think you got the grasp of the joke, I don't care if Paul loved Jesus or not, he focused more on Jesus' Resurrection and his return much more than his life. He did not get along with Peter, the one who said to be with Jesus himself, could Peter have loved Jesus more? But regardless it doesn't matter, you quote from the letter that most likely to forged and later attributed to Paul, thus these aren't necessarily his thoughts.
@christophergibson71556 ай бұрын
@@BrghtScorpio "He did not get along with Peter,"... Incorrect. Paul had to rebuke Peter once only for withdrawing from the Gentiles when certain Jews came to visit. (2 Peter 3:15b-16) And that is a grand misconception to think that Paul did not know Jesus as Peter did. @@christophergibson7155 right there: "Both of them filled with the Holy Spirit", this makes no sense to me outside of that being their motivation to spread the message (which is not uncommon for religious cults in the Greco-roman world). Paul's teachings seem to be more prominent than Jesus' teachings themselves.
@christophergibson71556 ай бұрын
@@BrghtScorpio That is incorrect. You are imagining that happened. And this was not the case according to God's own Word. Suppose your advice was good and Paul was somehow speaking the truth on behalf of God when he wrote Galatians. Can you point at something in Galatians that contradicts something believed by the Mormons? I have been atheist since age 8 or so, and I can't remember very well before then. This infighting between Christian groups always feels weird to me when I encounter it. They all seem to be able to somehow get past the contradiction between God having an important message for us and God trusting that message to hearsay and paper books that must be copied repeatedly by unreliable scribes. Somehow the conflicting Christian groups get past that and then find that they disagree about something else. It seems absurd every time.

@@Critical_Explorer-vw5hy I think you are talking about Galatians 1:8: "But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed!" Galatians 1:1-2 identifies "we" as Paul and one or more people who were following Paul when Paul wrote Galatians. To make this relevant to Mormonism, we need to say that something in Mormonism is contrary to something said by "we" prior to Paul writing Galatians. Galatians was the first letter from Paul we have. It was written even before the Gospels. So we don't have any records of what the Mormon gospel would have to contradict for Joseph Smith or Moroni to be accursed by Paul. Did you read Galatians before telling your Mormon acquaintance to read Galatians? I was quite surprised to have all of the New Testament aside from Galatians 1:1-8 become unknowable even if I were to believe Paul at the beginning of Galatians.

Galatians is I think the most damning letter to Christianity, but also to mythicism. If Paul invented Jesus or only had an angelic figure, his disputes with the "super apostles" and the Jerusalem church are incomprehensible, and it makes no sense why he'd invent them when they only serve to undermine his authority. And as you point out, Galatians also shows the historical early Christian sects couldn't decide on what the orthodox positions should even be. Given that, and that the Roman wars seem to have destroyed all documents of the Jerusalem church, nobody alive can know the full breadth of disagreement between the religion's founders. It probably was a politicized end-times sect of temple outsiders, but the devil was always in the details.

What I have never understood is why Paul was even "chosen". Jesus spent three years wandering around the Middle East doing his ministry. He met tens of thousands of people and was supposedly part god and thus could see things about people (would this person be a good disciple after I am gone?) and convince them to follow him. He had such a wide choice of disciples and the ability to get them to follow him. Yet, with all that power and knowledge, he doesn't pick the best disciples. He has to reveal himself to Paul at a later date. Why? Why couldn't he pick and teach the right people during his THREE YEAR stint? Why did the disciples become irrelevant in such a short time? Couldn't Jesus have done a better job of selecting disciples? How can a revelation be equivalent to three years of discussions? Thousands of hours of question and answer is trumped by a bright light on the road? Really?
@christophergibson71556 ай бұрын
"Why did the disciples become irrelevant in such a short time? Couldn't Jesus have done a better job of selecting disciples?" Jesus chose exactly who He needed to choose. And all of the Apostles (excluding Judas and John) died as martyrs for the faith. They knew Jesus not just outwardly but inwardly. They were born again by the Spirit of God and were baptized in the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. And when Jesus ascended He promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would lead and guide them into all truth. (John 14:26) And Paul received "revelation" because of that very Holy Spirit that Jesus had sent. Yes, "really". This is the wonderful promise that Jesus would not leave His disciples as orphans...."I will come to YOU." (John 14:18)

He probably never expected anyone to collect his letters, so maybe he's happy saying one thing to one group and another to another. His Corinthian letters seem to back that up. Also, Galatians may have been written much later than the Corinthian letters. We see an older and more frustrated and desperate Paul in Galatians. That's what Dr Steve Mason suggests anyway, though that's a consensus only among a minority of scholars.

Galatians is the bread and butter for the free grace camp whenever they want to argue against works…good luck upholding it with the rest of the New Testament 😂. It gets pretty hazy real quick and you really have to “negotiate” with the text bc there is a cornucopia of verses that suggests we have to do works or be transformed. Free grace was the last Christian camp I was in before deconverting, and boy am I glad I don’t have to wrestle with scripture anymore in attempts to make it all fit without contradicting.

It's pretty obvious what happened in Galatia, reading between the lines. Paul does not bring up the meeting in Jerusalem without purpose: He is emphasizing that there was an arrangement between himself and Cephas not to mess with the doctrine of each others' churches. Some Jewish Christian showed up in Galatia and started preaching circumcision, and Paul assumed this was Cephas trying to get back at him for calling him out. You can feel the undercurrent of "We had a DEAL, Cephas!" seething through Paul's writing. Now, to be clear, it's possible this was all in Paul's head and Cephas didn't deliberately interfere with his church. It's also possible it really did happen. It's petty drama and I love that about Galatians.
@justin23085 ай бұрын
It’s also weird, when you think about it. Peter by this point already knew about the gentile mission and earlier hadn’t been afraid to stand up for what was right in COURT. That was in Acts. In Galatians, though, he’s presented as regressing when he should’ve been one of the Jerusalem leaders who agreed in the verdict.

14:50 argh! This is like 2 Corinthians all over again! We cannot use Acts as a historical framework and just slot the letters into it. The visits don't match up, and Acts never even mentions any letters. Acts is fiction, pure and simple. The "Jerusalem Council" in Acts is largely based on what Paul says in Galatians imho. Real scholars don't assume that Acts is historical and then go from there. As I say, Galatians is obviously late, because it has that bit about him having his revelation seventeen years earlier (3 years plus 14 years, in chapters 1 and 2). Some scholars recognise this, as well as what I said in my other comment about Paul's desperation as he begins to suspect that he might die before the son of man comes in the clouds, to be indications that Galatians may be the latest, or one of the latest, of the surviving uncontested epistles.

Hey, Brandon, I know of a Hebrew Roots/Torah-observant website called Case For Torah that offers some good talking points on this topic. To summarize one, though, it’s believed that Paul wasn’t talking all the time about the WRITTEN Torah but the ORAL Torah (traditions). When he was referring to the written Torah, like here, he was saying that the Torah wasn’t the means of salvation. Salvation was always by faith, but faith should be shown/strengthened by works as a response to faith, hence he and James wouldn’t contradict each other. The same goes for “weak and miserable forces” that he mentions (which might also have been pagan stuff). Regarding Peter, the RCG and others make a decent point that the rock Jesus was talking about wasn’t Peter but rather Peter’s FAITH in him (Petros vs Petra in the Greek). Finally, regarding Paul’s confrontation of Peter, was that the first confrontation? Jesus said a public confrontation is necessary after a person won’t listen in private or with a small group. If Paul had discussed this with Peter at least twice before, then he probably wouldn’t have been wrong to do a public confrontation.

One thing this caught my attention are the passages included in the problematic section 1, 2 and 4. Given how the new testament develops a form virtue ethics, where a proper moral action is sensitive to context rather than universal moral maxims, why wouldn't it be justified for Paul to use the language that he does in some of his passages if the situations requires it? specially since Paul's epistles are directed to specific communities of believers for their concrete situations
@Badficwriter6 ай бұрын
Paul contradicts himself though. Contextual ethics support going along with Gentiles when dealing with Gentiles, for the greater good, but Paul is happy to call out this as hypocrisy when it is his rivals.
