Sylvia Massy, Taylor Hawkins and over 60 different microphones - this is what the first Galaxy 64 Synergy Core recording session looked like. The mood has been set, Sylvia has prepared her setup and the Dante audio interface is ready to unpack the rich tapestries of the mics’ unique sound. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the process of making Taylor Hawkins’ “One And The Same”.

How many phasing issues would you like for this session? Sylvia: Yes please
@nikolaygeorgiev41
@nikolaygeorgiev41 4 жыл бұрын
You don't have to use all mics at the same time. The best part of drum recording in a room like this is to swap or bring in/out different room mics for different sections of the song. And then there were two sets to be comapred... So no, no phase issues really. She certainly knows what she's doing :)

When you say “phase issues” do you mean things losing perceived volume (phasing out) as they are spread too thin in stereo? Still have yet to discover these phase issues I’m always hearing people mention.
@TomMcCaffrey
@TomMcCaffrey 3 жыл бұрын
@@NRG2 when you record two or more mics on one source, the distance of the mics to the source will determine how long the sound takes to reach the mic. So if two mics pick up a sound at different times the soundwaves can cancel each other out when summed together, which is what “phasing” means
@VaudeoProductions
@VaudeoProductions 3 жыл бұрын
@@NRG2 and commonly you'll hear a loss in frequencies which in turn causes a loss in volume/body. Another way to understand phasing is to think about when a drummer hits a snare, when his stick hits the head, the initial transient/waveform from a top mic will curve downward first because the sound pressure is moving away from the mic initially, and then the opposite for a bottom mic as the pressure/waves move toward the mic initially. If you don't flip the phase/polarity of either mic, the snare will sound thin, missing body especially in the low end/low mids. As soon as you flip one or the other, that snare should instantly sound like it's supposed to, and of course everything will sound even better if all mics are in phase together and closely aligned.

I was interested to learn more about the synergy core processing. With ProTools Carbon out, hybrid processing using internal (processing inside an audio interface) and host processing is becoming a significant advantage. Does the Galaxy use AFX2DAW? How well does it integrate? Amazing mic collection though...It will be interesting to have only Antelope Modelling mics instead of having 60+ different mics for flavour.

I don't get it. How does it not have sync issues when there are that many mics spaced at so many different distances from the drums? The sound is going to reach each mic at a different time and you can clearly hear a flam effect.
@morbidmanmusic
@morbidmanmusic 4 жыл бұрын
That is not a problem if it sounds good. room mics are most common. distance is good on drums in general also. They sounds more realistic farther away. Also they can be time aligned after the fact to be closer or further away. Very common. And I'm sure a little measuring distance to the snare came into play for phase related issues. .
