Galaxy A42 5G Screen and Frame Replacement Guide | Teardown | A for Average

Today I'll be showing you how to teardown another of Samsung's A-series phones: The A42 5G. This one is barely different from other A-series devices, but includes the large clunky 5G antennas we've seen in flagship S-series devices lately. We'll be replacing the screen and frame assembly with a new Samsung part. Links to parts and tools below:

The other day I was quoted $200 and a week to fix a cracked screen, that works just fine. I kind of chuckled. It's a two year old $300 phone. LOL That and I have to charge it ever night now. Think I'll just run it till it dies.

$200 AND a week?! What a rip off! Good shops will repair this phone for less than $150 and if they have any idea what they are doing it should take them an hour, two hours tops to repair it. Wild.

Depends on your carrier! Verizon uses the larger UW antennas

What adhesive should I use to adhere the back panel?

I use tesa double sided tape, though any thin double-sided tape should work, bonus if it's water resistant!

hi, do i have to heat it up before taking the back panel off? i'm doing it myself and have no way of doing so

It isn’t necessary but it will make the adhesive softer. In this case you’ll want to use isopropyl alcohol if you can to weaken the adhesive. You can also get it a bit warmer from just having it in your pocket, charging it, or playing a video for a while. Technically you can go raw and just yeet it off the phone (gently), since it’s plastic it won’t break but it can bend and warp a bit

Easily, sounds like your display cracked which keeps it from displaying. You just need a screen replacement and you'll be back up and running in no time

@@ktg_pesojr7885 nope, no need on Samsung phones. The first thing the technician should do is go to disconnect the battery from the inside (it's pretty important), this won't lose any data or cause issues like it could with iPhones.

BE CAREFUL WITH THE ION BATTERY. I just attempted this repair and could not remove the battery it ended up being pierced, it spewed blood red sparks everywhere. I was lucky enough to have exactly what i needed beside me (not on purpose) a shovel and fire extinguisher. The extinguisher held the explosion and fire back long enough for me to realize I had a shovel near me and used that to throw it in the dirt outside, where it proceeded to explode. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL

We sometimes called them spicy pillows, lithium ion batteries pack a punch. When they get pierced the layers of the cells contact one another, dumping their entire charge capacity into that single point as fast as possible. Massive amounts of heat, once it starts it won’t stop. Most repair shops keep a bucket of sand nearby to dunk on batteries and smother them. Glad you got out safe!

Thanks for your demo. I would like to also do my own, but the options of kits online are so confusing. My phone specs are SM-A426U 5g, AMOLED display. But I am having a hard time finding this model number where the AMOLED display is specified. Sometimes I see OLED, sometimes I see LCD, but I never see AMOLED. I don't want to order the wrong one, then have to send it back. Can you help? Thank you in advance!

To be honest I have never seen an LCD version of this one, so I'm pretty sure it's just retail companies not knowing the difference between LCD/OLED when they make the listing. If you want a trustworthy place I'd check Injured Gadgets or GadgetFix!

What is the heating mate that you are useing look nice?

It doesn't really have a brand on it, it's just a generic "adjustable silicone heating and soldering pad". I've found a few on Amazon but usually find more on Ali Express.

If it still displays but won't respond to touch you can connect a mouse and usb hub to it and copy data. If not, you'll need a new screen to be able to unlock and use it again

Alright I’ll tell just you, personally. You can remove the screen from the frame by applying heat and alcohol then using a razor blade to cut it out. 90% of the time this will destroy the screen. It will also be very hard to glue the new screen into the frame, which is why it’s less work to just swap it with a display and frame combo.

I was doing this (tysm for the tutorial), and noticed my phone did not have the 5G blocks??? I specifically bought the 5g, from a trusted, big seller (Elgiganten) - but I did pay for a display replacement at a less mainstream shop once. What are the odds, the guy took them out for whatever reason?

Entirely possible, but I will say that different carriers use different modules. As far as I've seen Verizon is the only one who uses the large blocks.

This might seem out of the blue, but I need a second opinion to see if my theory is correct. Just a few weeks ago, I cracked my phone (a Samsung a42 5g) at work (I forgot to get a screen protector, I know. It's really dumb of me considering what I'm trying to get into). Just recently, my phone just "died" and won't turn on, despite working as well not that while ago. I tried: - charging it - resetting it - plugging it in and resetting it - plugging it into my computer - leaving it plugged in for more than 5 minutes (trying the 30 to 60 minutes trick) and all of them doesn't work. My theory is, that because of the screen issue, the battery and possibly, the internal components have been affected, thus causing a permanent shutdown. That's what I think it is.

Very unlikely unless moisture got into it as well. I'm not sure the extent of your damage, but I can tell you I regularly work on devices that have been run over by vehicles and they are still recoverable. Something in the damaged screen could be preventing start up. The best thing to do would be connect it to a ammeter to see if it's drawing any current when charging. Next would be opening it up and disconnecting the battery for a bit, and trying again (unless you see more damage internally).
