I feel like any of Harlock's stories should be watched by everyone at least once. Whether it's Galaxy Express 999, Arcadia Of My Youth, Space Symphony Maetel, Endless Odyssey, Cosmo Warrior Zero, or any of the other series

I have watched a few of those. The other night I watched the one that involved the planet Valhalla and wotan. That was taken straight from Norse mythology.

Another huge one from Leiji.. maybe his biggest depending on where one grew up. I grew up in Sweden / Scandinavia And Leijis show Starzinger (SF Saiyuki) Was HUGE here. Its also a space opera, where they travel between planets and solarsystems and galaxies in order to reach the great planet "Great King" to restore the energy balance of the world/galaxy. Its based on Journey to the west (The Monkey King)

Saw the entire series on Crackle in 2012, and it was one of the best experiences I've had with watching a show. The different type of worlds that they encountered in each episode were all fun to watch and kept it refreshing. Definitely in my top ten shows of all time. Would encourage anyone to see this wonderful anime.

Excellent video! I love pretty much all of Leiji Matsumoto's stuff. I understand that it's not for everyone, but I like his signature art style/character design a LOT. I call it "beautiful people & potato head people" 🤣 What makes his stuff so great though is his storytelling. It's super old fashioned in a way, but it seems like a breath of fresh air compared to today's average.

I saw the movie back in the late 90s on the SciFi channel - it was my first anime and I fell in love, instantly. The very next anime that I saw was Demon City Shinjuku followed by the Escaflowne movie. I've been looking for that edginess in anime ever since.

I got into reading the manga because of the Galaxy Railways (one of Leji's producer role). The anime was interesting because of the main cast's train, Big One!

I vaguely remember this show when I was young and it made me really emotion because I think sometime in the show maetel and the main character get separated, after that my mom decided it wasn't for me. I think I still have the show on dvd

As soon as Yamato 3199 is done, here's hoping GE999 is next up on the reworking roster. Now that Toei has taken over managing Leijisha it is expected to really get behind a big push to cement the master's legacy.

I think there was a huge influence from Star Trek or Dr. Who (and they hard a Star Wars magazine so I guess a bit of that also). About 12ep in and so far, while a lot of the episodes feel sort of basic in terms of story telling, there's a lot of really interesting concepts going on. I think this review has been exactly how I've been seeing the show so far. Looking forward to seeing more of it!

Star Wars in general has had a pretty big impact on a lot of sci-fi in anime. But yeah it wouldn't surprise me if they were also inspired by other things like Star Trek or Dr. Who. Yeah certain episodes can definitely feel pretty basic. Being that the show is mostly episodic, the quality does tend to vary from episode to episode. But the cool thing about 999 is that it does raise some questions as it goes, that will eventually culminate in a, in my opinion, pretty interesting ending

If the show would consist only out of my 45 or so favorite episodes, it would be an absolute must-watch. But as it is, it's quite repetitive. I wish there would have been a few more moments that more clearly change the dynamic or relationship between Maetel and Tetsurou (be it for the better or worse). The show had also a very strong overarching theme of "pursuing your dream" and what it means to do it (not only for Tetsurou but nearly all side characters). Would you even die for your dream? That included escaping poverty, illness, dead/getting old, desperation, crime or just wanting to be together with the person you love, live freely. Even art, protection of the environment were included. I'm not ashamed to say that several episodes were making me a bit emotional, they were just sad and depressing. Still, I prefer Queen Millennia.

6:40 In Galaxy Express 999's defense, those two shows were directed by Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki (respectively) and even on a TV show's budget, it's really hard to top that level of talent.

That was a great review. I really enjoyed that show when I watched it. You're right that the animation wasn't great, but it did have animation and I don't think that's the thing I was there for, that time. XD The craziest ep that stuck with me was the one about Sakezan's Planet. Sakezan, the Drunken Tarzan. That ep really stands out. Other than that, there sure are a lot of planets and stellar objects ruled by witches, huh? I found your video when I was looking for an example of Tetsuro's show look, since he looks so different in the movies and I wanted to show some friends.

5:23 - I will admit that Matsumoto-sensi's character design is like nothing in anime. His art is one of a kind. I never had an issue with his designs, since I grew up watching Star Blazers, getting used to his style, so that when I moved onto Robotech, it was just another art style like any other.

I was reading Umineko and they mention this story at the end of ep 5 they say "(LD) Galaxy Express? (BK) the one that isnt Night On The... (LD) You know I read that back when I wasnt a witch. ...I always thought it was strange that humans who obtained eternal life could become so cruel... At the time I honestly couldnt relate. (BK) After becoming a witch and living a thousand years, I fully understand it. ...That writer could understand our cruelty really well, in the truest sense." So that made me want to look for what they were talking about and it seems its this anime. I definitely need to read the manga since im more into reading then watching. Good video

As a kid in the early '80s, I would occasionally see posters and magazines for this series. Access to dubbed or subbed versions were expensive and practically unattainable for me. Maetel's character design immediately grabbed my attention because she always looked perpetually sad, as though she was constantly suffering from fighting back some unspeakable heartache. I don't care about spoilers so could you please tell me what the reason was behind why she looked so pained all the time?

After years of being aware of the show finally watched the whole series, was not aware it dated back to 1978, this show was much better than expected, yes the animation and art is dated in some episodes, SPOILER ALERT DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO WATCH THE SHOW BUT HAVEN'T, at the end Maetel goes off on more journeys with other boys and says good by to Tetsuro, however Maetel destroyed the factory for manufacturing mechanical bodies, what does she do with the boys after the journey ends, since the journey was about boys getting mechanical bodies? if anyone has read the whole manga.

I recommend watching the movies first, then if you want more the television series. The first movie covers the story of the television series, but heavily condensed and with a few changes, the second is original material. The television series has more depth, but is a much longer time investment. I like both the movies, and the television program, but definitely prefer the television version.
