I think honestly this movie is subtly telling people not to believe everything they watch, even if its labeled as a "documentary" or "biography". Human beings never evolved with television of movie screens and its scientifically been proven that watching anything on a screen can imprint into your memories as if it was real. I think its also saying that the aliens never considered producing works of fiction or lying.

The fact that a movie that ridicules everything about Star Trek (the "hokey" premise, the actors being typecast and coming to resent their roles, the conventions, and even the fans themselves) manages to become beloved by Star Trek fans shows how incredible this movie is. I always thought it would be awesome if the Galaxy Quest franchise took the place of Star Trek in the Star Trek universe. As for Thermians in the Trek universe, since the only remaining Thermians were the ones on the Protector, they might have gone extinct before any of the Trek shows or maybe they puttered off to the far side of the galaxy and started a little colony there, I dunno, I’m just brainstorming…

The scene where one of the Thermians dies, and Rickman does his monologue is one of the best scenes in cinema. Given that Rickman's character despised saying his catch phrase line throughout the movie, then delivers it with so pure acting talent is stunning. Right up there with Tears in Rain scene. Not kidding.

I liked that they all had an arc of going from despising their characters, to appreciating how much their characters meant to others. Rickman's character is the best example: from "I'm not going to say that stupid line again" to willingly saying that line, because he saw what a great gift it was to a dying man (Thermian), to be told those words.

The story goes that shortly after the movie's release Jonathan Frakes who plays Commander Riker on Star Trek the Next Generation called his friend Patrick Stewart and asked him if he had seen this movie yet and Sir Patrick said he had not planned on seeing it. Jonathan told him, "Oh, you must! It's fantastic!" and they saw it together. It's too bad that it didn't do well enough to warrant a sequel, sadly, but has a large following to this day. What surprised me was how touching some parts of it were, unexpectedly. For example when Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman) says his "By Grapthar's hammer..." line with feeling and emotion (for the first time in his career) to the dying Thermian. Everyone needs to see this deleted scene with Tech Sargent Chen (who, you'll remember, is actually a moron): It's the first scene here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5OXpGh5m7V3ars

Im so happy they did this clip, because that movie had far more depth than anyone realizes. To perfectly mock yet reflect the whole star trek series, both behind and in front of the camera, with accurate reflections on William shatner as the actor AND James Kirk as the role, combined with a story thats compelling, combined with what could have been ridiculously corny stuff without the performances. Just genius how it all came together. Imagine someone like Megan Fox or even Vin Diesel as the lead alien, and you'll realize quickly how bad this could have been. Also the comedic performances, especially the Mathusar and Sam Rockwell, just fantastic. Great writing, great acting, not-getting-in-the-way directing...perfectly done. It also reflects how good writing can be elevated by incredibly perceptive actors who don't try to mug to the camera.

I care more for these characters from a parody than I do for lead characters in most modern blockbusters. What makes Galaxy Quest work so well is that underneath the parody is an actual engaging plot about characters you care about. And the Thermians being "cute" in trying and failing to emulate humans is such a big part of that. Even it it wasn't a parody you'd still care about the characters and their plight, and still find the tactical twist "this ship is dragging mines" an excellent plot point.

As an old scy-fi , or however you have spelled it over the decades. This movie was absolute genius. Yes it was mostly about the 'Trek' shows and movies, and quite a bit more. But the not only nod to those old shows, but it at the same time made fun of them as well. I still find it odd that this film wasn't a bigger hit with just how many nerds there are. And I am a proud member of them. Pure greatness.

It's one of those movies you really like, but can't explain why. It bears frequent viewings, and like the best movies and sitcoms, it's bred a following and it's own unique set of classic one liners. But you have to hand it to the cast, there are so many memorable moments from each one. As I'm writing this I'm thinking of Sigorney Weavers famous two word exclamation, which was delivered so perfectly, the cinema cracked up.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. It came out around 6 months after I finished grad school, and was settling in to a new job and apartment. So I suspect I was too busy to see any movies at the time. I picked the DVD up on sale at Walmart many years later. But it's just the type of quirky, unique movie I really love. This video on the Thermians was excellent as well. They did such a good job portraying a very strange and funny race of aliens that were lovable as well. You actually end up caring about their survival and don't really mind the love scene at the end between the human and the tentacled alien. Somehow that made her human form all the more sexier.

I had always thought they were doing "dolphins trying to be humans" as a directors instruction. The mentioned tonal warble when speaking English. The alien "chittering" language. The sleek grey suits. The pasted down hair. The arms and legs that didn't quite work as arms and legs. Even the fixed smile as a dolphin grin. A bit galling that I had read far too much into the aliens character development
