Galaxy S5 vs. iPhone 5S Speed Test

Okay, obviously some of you guys are confused so let me try to clear things up. In the browser portion of the test where I seem to "hesitate" on the Galaxy S5, there wasn't any hesitation at all. I was simply waiting for Chrome (and the Verge bookmark) to finish loading up. If you look closely you can see that the Verge icon was still grayed out, meaning it wasn't finished loading and wasn't clickable at that point. As soon as the Verge icon showed color (meaning it was done loading) I tapped on it. Hopefully this helps clear things up!

Brendan Schultz Although I'm more leaning towards Android than iOS, I gotta admit that some of those specs are necessary to run Android with Touchwiz overlay. All those features added by Samsung, pretty sure 3 GB of RAM are necessary to have them active altogether. With the small screen of the iPhone, 1080p on that would be too much of an overkill in my opinion. You're right about optimization though, and I think that's what iOS has going for it. Everything is optimized to run smoothly for the most part on iOS devices' subpar-to-Android-phones specs. That being said, I don't think there is a "best" phone out there.

it really does show how poor samsungs optimisation is with the S5 i mean the HTC One M8 is running literally the same hardware and took the iPhone by storm, thats not saying the s5 is a bad phone by any means, just saying samsung has a lot of improvements to make on its version of android

Definitely. Samsung always lags too sadly... I've owned the original HTC One and currently have a 5s... Reason why the ONE M8 won in the speed test was due to obvious reasons: Quad Core vs Dual... 2GB ram meant that even when the M8 had lots of apps opened, it'd still operate faster compared to the 5s' 1GB ram..

The crazy thing about these speed tests against the 5S is that almost no apps so far (at least from my experience) are even optimized yet for the new processor. Pretty crazy that a dual-core is putting out performance like this, even 6 months after being released.

I am a developer of android and iPhone applications and I can tell you there is a clear distinction between how apps are made. For instance, android uses java while apple uses objective C, this is completely ludicrous to judge each phone on apps that are made differently

If you watched closely you saw how the verge bookmark was greyed out because it was being loaded while the ip5s loaded right away. All the bloat Samsung puts makes the phone seem slower than it should be considering the internals.

Agreed. The One M8's less bloated Sense 6 was lightning fast when paired with the 2.3 ghz S801 (the S5 has the higher-clocked 2.5 ghz version). It beat the iPhone (fairly?) by nearly 8 seconds.

And here's the answer why iphones are pretty good devices, if not the best...even tho the 5s has half the power of the s5 and ''outdated processor'' its still capable of keeping up with todays standards with extremely good results. You might say its old and it has the same design for years now or the ios is getting boring etc etc but hey over the years apple and its developers have managed to optimize the software in such a way that all the apps run smooth without lags. Its a well built device with great specs and a great camera..so next time you are about to say iphones suck think that android needed aprox 5 years to come so close to iphones performance..However i am not gonna lie..i am a huge fan of android devices especially htc since i adore having a huge screen and the free choises of customization that android gives you but i dont expect the upcoming iphones to have larger displays or fancier specs cause simplicity is what has differentiated then from the android market and has kept them up for such a long time.

I am a good viewer of your videos Mr David. However, you need to know that chrome is slower as double in the galaxy phones than it would be the stock browser. I looked in a different video that galaxy scored 700 and something in the chrome version and in the regular Browser, it scored 300 something making it as double of quickness. Yes he did, but obviously he did hesitate to touch the screen for prolonged periods of time on the s5, multiple times. The only thing conclusive in this test is that he let the iphone win by running up the clock and taking way too long to react. I also noticed how familiar he was with the iphones menus and icon locations where as he struggled to find them on the s5. This goes to show that this test was conducted with clear and convincing favoritism towards the iphone. In my opinion the s5 won by a mile.

I will always prefere the iphone 5S instead of any android device. why? simply because the iOS is running faster than android, generally. When it comes about specs, the S5 is by far better than the iPhone, but our little iPhone does not seem to need that. Just imagine an iPhone that has all of the hardware specs of the Galaxy S5, but still running iOS. It would kill the market. I like iPhone because iOS is not that laggy as android is. I know what I'm sayin' because Java is way slower in execution than Objective-C.

The 5S is simply an inferior phone 1. Less durable 2. No storage upgrades 3. Less customization 4. Inferior camera 5. Smaller screen 6. Poor battery life Ect... mrheno10 If external apps are used while trying compare the speed of two phones then it's not fair, because once you test external software as a part of comparing phones you're no longer comparing them properly because external software has been used. For Example; if I wanted to test which is better at playing videos, Mac or PC, and I use VLC for the PC test and I use the default player for mac, it's not fair because the variable of how good the external software is also added to the mix.

My thing is this. For all the Apple fans and the Android fans. Until u own both, at the same time. You will never experience the true user experience at the same time. Ive had both a 5s and a Galaxy Note 3. Honestly they both run the same. I chose the Note 3 BC I like to be able to write down needed items at work. And can send a copy as a pic to others. It kinda boils down to looks and feel(iPhone) vs feature packed(Galaxy). Love the feature to use my phone as my tv, projector remote, notepad, camera(who isn't doing that), journal, feature of NFC(use a sticker that when I tap my phone... Post to my social media that I'm on my way to work((this saves me time posting to all and avoid the "wyd texts"))), better music downloads on the go, use of the Galaxy Gear(my job keeps me moving... And it's nice to know who is calling/texting without risking my phone falling while I'm rushing from department to department.), I change PCs a lot so I don't like to have to erase my phone each time(could be wrong but I have to each time I change PCs with my iPhone) I don't like having to use my PC just to put that one song I heard on Pandora #iTunesIsAPain I'd choose an iPhone for how it looks mainly... Its gorgeous. Wish it had better expansion for memory. Don't like online storage that much. Cameras are an equal draw to me. Although brightness is key with iPhone where as accurate rich color is key with the Galaxy. The front camera on the iPhone is best where as the main on the galaxy seems to give slightly better photos. The iPhone just works as it is. Not complicated not complex where as the vast customization of a Galaxy may overwhelm the ones who are not into the settings. Air drop is cool but feel it's a rip of WiFi direct on Galaxy devices(which is a never ending rip of other products.. Will just Give credit to IBM), seems it was designed to be less straining for one handed use(although I preferred larger). The list goes on... I'm very ticky on comparisons... I chose not to use a method as this BC this isn't a typical way people use their phones. Think both would eventually self destruct(simultaneously). So before you say one is better... Remember its based on your preference of hardware feature vs looks and feel. Just look at the comments. That's the base argument. "Metal this" "ir blaster that"... Tbh the phones are the same... Its Apple and Samsung as a company that should be judged. How are they are good and bad for the consumers.

Still a huge improvement where the s5 took on the iPhone in a couple of apps and got trumped on angry birds. Given that samsung's touchwiz used to be laggy it is a good improvement to be within 4 s which don't make a huge difference in nearly 2 mins of usage. Webpages loaded slower (higher resolution 2.2x more content) so still good xD

One thing though, it would be more precise if on the browser you would test both phones with google chrome, but you used safari on iphone 5s and chrome on s5. The speed difference might have been because of software differences.

Biased? How? specs don't matter anymore. It's about optimization. Samsung stuffs touch wiz features down the phones throat causing it to bog down and be extremely slow. 2gb of ram doesn't matter when the software (touchwiz) alone is taking up 75% of it. That's with zero apps open.

Are you using ART? It helps improve apps a lot. But either way you get great results from the s5's beautiful's display and the iPhones OS.... but I like Android as it is open so that's why I chose it.

I saw the video. It's a nice comparison iv been using the Samsung s5 for nearly two weeks. I must say the graphics is awasome. The sites also load very fast on its own Internet browser. As it also defaults to phone version of the site. That was a trick played by phone buff. Not good guys when clearly the Internet button is located in the home dock. 😉

My favorite part of these videos is the comments. Honestly, no hate meant, but these comments make me feel smarter. And that's not saying much. Lets ask a very simple question. WHY did you buy the phone you currently have, and are defending so viciously? If you purchased it because it was "the newest most awesome phone", you are now excused, your comments are no longer valid. If you purchased it because "all the cool popular people or an actor/musician has one", you may now go stand with your fellow thoughtless clones following an imaginary leader. The ONLY people who should be commenting are those that purchased their device because its what works best for YOU. All of you in here saying the S5 is better specs... WHO CARES! It still was "slower" in this test. For all of you apple lovers yelling HAHA... shut the hell up! Its was NOT a big loss time wise. I'm also sick of hearing "it only lost because of touch"... The S5 COMES with touch and that's just how it is. So DEAL with it. I switch between Android and IOS depending on what phone is currently the best solution for my daily needs. I have a huge HD tv and HD monitor if I want to watch videos and such. For me, watching videos on my phone is pointless and not something I do on a regular basis. I don't travel into town to watch media on my phone. When I'm out, my phone is for work, text, phone calls, and sometimes music. For me its more important to have a form factor that is easy to use with one hand. If you have massive hands and can do all with one hand on your S5 or similarly large phone, great for you. But for the rest of us that need a smaller phone while multitasking, the iphone is just fine. Honestly, the argument I see the most is "iphone has a small screen". The new Iphone will have a larger screen. So what then? It still just sucks because its apple? Lets all grow up. I admit that I prefer apple over other phones. But only because Iphones most consistently are the best solution for MY needs. I do agree with many that Iphone is priced too high. Yes I do think the build quality is better than a lot of Android phones, but that price could still come down. Its hype and popularity that lead to those prices lets be honest and fair. In the end nothing matter except rather or not the phone works best for YOU. I have read most of these comments and I have yet to see ANY where a truly viable reason has been given that one phone is "better" that the other. The "best" smart phone is the one that fits your needs. If you prefer the S5, offer some reasons why. What does it do for you that makes it better for YOU. Same for Iphone users. Just saying mines better because *insert incorrect fanboy generated misinformation posing as a fact here* is NOT a viable answer. Here, I will start... I am currently using a Galaxy S3 because my Iphone 5s got knocked into a pool. I miss my 5s and I prefer it because I like a smaller phone that is easier to handle while multitasking with one hand. For ME, its the better phone choice.

I just put the iphone 5s in my hands at the store few months ago, when i was about to buy a new smartphone (i had an S3) and i realized, that there's no coming back to Apple. In comparison, the iPhone looks like a kid's phone, small and tiny. There's no way i go back to that small screen and that's enough for me. I've never seen a Samsung/HTC owner switching back to iPhone. If you tell a Samsung/HTC user if he would switch to iPhone, he'll laugh at you. And apollo14444 That is true, but unde a 4 second difference with a larger screen, larger battery, expandable storage, there's more to even the average non geek consumer than just speed. Like I personally use a nexus 5 and a note 3, I like the nexus' screen for anything that isn't just pictures and home screens.. but love my note for well pictures and home screens because of the saturation. It's really just up to who is using it to decide the screen since most android phones are all using a quadcore snapdragon. Either way.. in technicality the S5 is faster with the stuff it has to power where as the 5s is faster in visual/realworld speed (if anyone wants to argue with this statement.. it better be a good argument)

I wish you'd take Verge out of your web browser test. Wouldn't be too surprising if an Apple centric site such as The Verge paid more attention to optimisations for iPhone's, iPad's etc, comparative to Android devices. Better to load something like PhoneArena or GSMArena instead. Also surprised you used Chrome instead of Samsung's built in browser. Not sure which is faster on the S5, but on my S4, the last test I did, Samsung's own stock browser was quicker. In the same way I'd imagine Safari on the iPhone might be quicker than other third party offerings.
