After finding out how big of a fan Stephen Hawking was of Monty Python, I am so glad he got to do this with them. It made this even better. The greatest theoretical mind of the past 100 years in cosmology and astrophysics...was also someone who loved the Python just as much as his science. God rest his and Terry's souls.

It's B to Cdim7 to Bb, taking advantage of the fact that Cdim7 is just A9 with the root lopped off. You expect Cdim7 to resolve to Eb, then F7, then around the circle of fifths to end on G (which is not an unreasonable modulation, as the the interlude is in F#, and we are used to modulation up a half step from Broadway musicals). However, A9 does indeed resolve nicely to Bb, which sets up the big swell back to the verse. The emotional moment comes from the unexpected switch of Cdim7 into A9, which is in some sense the musical equivalent of a pun. So, in effect, Eric Idle just engaged in classic Python wordplay, but in musical form!

As of this comment, (November 14, 2020) it's still two down, four to go. You're probably thinking of the death of Neil Innes, one of the contenders for the title of the so-called "Seventh Python." Doesn't make it any less tragic, and the death of Terry Jones was the first red flag that 2020 was going to be different.
