Never seen a Longplay as good as this before:) Here's what the looks of the rival cars are and how they behave: Red: Do not catch up Green: Like a police car Blue: Similar to Green Truck: Tries to run you off the road(Reminds me of Ridge Racer's 13" Racing) Porsche: Synchronized Driving(Similar to Green) Brown: A muscle car that must be taken down to pass and win
@SaturnMemories11 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say the red cars don't catch up, but they aren't aggressive. The green car in Chicago is definitely behaves like the police, but it'll spin out if it hits you. There's also a pea green rival in Philly who is able to pass you if you're slow. The blue rival chucks cans of soda or beer at you when it's able to pass. I want to say you can completely outrun the dueling Porches if you do the stage perfectly, but I don't quite remember. The final rival looks more like an '80s Caddy with a spoiler and some Mad Max crap going on.

When you put the game on Easy, the truck on Stage 6 will not move and you have to focus on those curves or else you will fall down on the cliff. Putting it on Normal and Hard will make the stage harder as the truck was faster and they tended to ram you off the road aggressively.

Why is there no cops to arrest you in this port? In the arcade version, there are cops going to arrest you for a bit of challenge. That renders the cops in Kansas City stage completely useless.
@SaturnMemories9 жыл бұрын
***** The new music and CG cutscenes were added to make the game seem more cool and edgy. I'm guessing the fat exploding cop was deemed too hokey, so they stripped him out in favor of the boss battles, which ultimately lead to the final showdown with the "Mad Max" car.

I'm reading 'The Sega Arcade Revolution: A History in 62 Games' at the moment and I've just finished the section on Rad Mobile. I've never actually played the Saturn port, but according to the book it was quite poorly received at the time. Not really sure why though, it looks like a decent enough port from your video (interesting here though, that they decided to go down the polygon route for the CPU cars, rather than the sprites of the Sega System 32 version).
@SaturnMemories5 жыл бұрын
The main thing is the draw distance -- it's abysmal. You pretty much need to memorize the traffic patterns if you want to get anywhere. The other big thing is the controls. If you play the game as intended -- with the standard digital controller or the wheel -- it's awful. Neither one work well. If you plug in a 3D Pad and have it set to analog before the system boots, you can fool the game into thinking it's a wheel. Surprisingly, this is the best way to play Gale Racer. Most of the police chases have been eliminated from the game too. Even in the one instance that they still show up, you still can't be pulled over.

This was a decent port of the System 32...but I prefer all sprites vs polygons on cars..If would of run better...And the System 32 version had pop further back in the background.
@SaturnMemories10 жыл бұрын
Controls are kinda crappy unless you use a 3D pad (which it's not even designed to work with) and the draw distance is very short. Unless you have the traffic patterns memorized, it's kinda hopeless.

Saturn Memories Yeah it was a bad port...And Saturn was support to be powerful like System 32..

Orion Pax Saturn can handle super scaler games just fine. Outrun, Power Drift, Galaxy Force II, and Space Harrier all run great. Gale Racer is just a very early, sloppy Saturn release.
@CubamusPrime10 жыл бұрын
Saturn Memories Yeah but I heard the System 32 had multiple dedicated chips to handle seperate sprites and FX....So it was very hard to port over System 32 games. Maybe that is why this port was sloppy.

I like how in gale racer its "mecha sonic" and in the original it is 'sonic the "tojo" (hedgehog)' ... kinda fits the update....damn sega saturn should of had way more sega system32 arcade releases.
@SaturnMemories7 жыл бұрын
That's Metal, but you can get Mecha and Silver Sonic too. In fact, you can get a crapload of different Sonic character keychains in the game.
The graphics leave a lot to be desired. Then I read that it's from 1994. The Saturn did not even make it to Europe until 1995 so I can imagine how rushed this was or how low the standards still were. The game was probably technically outdated by the time it hit the home console market.
@SaturnMemories10 жыл бұрын
Came out the week after the system hit stores. May as well have been a launch title. Still, aside from the short draw distance and polygonal cars, this isn't far off from how Rad Mobile looked.

I would like to believe that this game was rushed through development. This game could've gotten a 1997 re-release with many improvements, possibly arcade perfect and analogue support.
@SaturnMemories4 жыл бұрын
There is actually analog support and you're seeing it in this video. The game supports the Saturn wheel, which is an analog device. That said, it doesn't control particularly well with the wheel, but do have one more analog option that works surprisingly well and that's the 3D pad. Just make sure the controller is switched into analog mode before starting the console, and it'll trick the game into thinking it's a wheel. It's seriously the best way to play Gale Racer.

Rad Mobile ( arcade version of Gale Racer) has a much more comprehensive horizon view and slightly better graphics.

I was hoping this game is perfectly ported to the Sega Saturn, but too bad, the Red Mobile on the arcade is solid 60 fps, but the Sega Saturn version Red Mobile, which is the Gale Racer in this video is 30 fps, causing the game is not smooth as the arcade version. I have no idea what is the purpose Sega did on this game, it is the early stage for Saturn's launch and they should port this game on it with far better graphic than the arcade. However, they don't. I love the Red Mobile, I really want to play it on the Saturn, but too bad, the Gale Racer is not the perfect Red Mobile at all.

It was actually ported by System Sacom, which is better known for its adventure games. They didn't really do it justice, which is a shame when you compare it to some of the other great superscaler ports on the system.

Grace Kelly I own three Saturns and 230+ games on the system. I simply choose to emulate. The results are often as good as, if not better than the real thing. It's more convenient, and I don't have to throw down an additional $300+ for an XRGB. I've already spent well in excess $1,200 to keep this channel alive. It's a labor of love, but I'm not made of money.
@PSXuploads8 жыл бұрын
Saturn Memories I understand, still would love to see you getting pristine footage from an actual saturn, if u have that many games u could probably afford an upscaler too :P
@SaturnMemories8 жыл бұрын
Grace Kelly Well, you're certainly welcome to donate the cash. I'd also need AR flashed with Pseudo Saturn, so I can avoid opening my sealed games without subjecting my Saturns to swaps. A new stack of CD-Rs would be nice too. Probably would need a Japanese SCART cable (I've got a European one, but there's a pin difference). I've read that I may need a Sync Strike as well, but I'm not positive on that. Meanwhile, I still have to set aside some extra cash for a new hard drive. Probably at least 3TB. Recording at 40Mbps eats up space quick! And I guess I can continue to do without a Blue Snowball. Bottom line. This shit's expensive and costs add up quick. I make $1.25/day off ad revenue, which doesn't pay for the equipment, yet alone all the time I sink into this.
