Look at the color of the water and sky. The way it sounds. An entire game about water ski jumping, can you imagine? Somewhere we took a wrong turn. Nothing is big and loud and bright and punchy like this is.

I used to be obsessed with this game. It was at my local Mr. Gatti's Pizza arcade (until about 2009ish), and at a movie theater/bowling alley about 20 minutes from my house. Always loved the Expert course and its music along with graphics. Yep, that is the cheesy voice actor from SEGA Bass Fishing -- Hisaki Nimiya. "Let's START!"

You're lucky my local bowling alley didn't have it but luckily they had the ski game which was also super fun.

With so many great games left in the arcades, emulation has been such a godsend for Sega fans; finally being able to play games like this, Golden Axe: RotDA, Daytona USA 2, Slashout, Star Wars Trilogy, OutRunners, Toy Fighter, and F1 Super Lap again or for the first time has been amazing.
@SaturnMemories9 жыл бұрын
+OriginalName90 It's a pity Model 3 emulation isn't a bit further along. Daytona 2, Sega Rally 2, and Scud Race are all playable but they could be so much better. Would be nice if Sega just gave them a proper port.
@OriginalName909 жыл бұрын
For sure. Unfortunately, I don't think that Sega's recent arcade ports have been profitable. I wonder if they'd do better if they tried a comprehensive arcade compilation? Maybe it'd be interesting if they took a page from NES Remix/WarioWare and remixed the games into something fresh that might attract new gamers, then made the originals unlockable. I dunno, I'm just another guy on the Internet with free ideas that Sega won't use. I've been hoping DEMUL will pick Model 3 back up -- their last update is incredible. I just want to be able to play the real Virtua Fighter 3.
@SaturnMemories9 жыл бұрын
OriginalName90 I think Daytona did well for them. The leaderboard list was crazy long compared to games like NiGHTS. As for Model 3, there's been more recent work done on it in MAME than either Supermodel or DEMUL. Hopefully one of them make some major breakthroughs soon.
@OriginalName909 жыл бұрын
Ah, alright, good to know. I just figured since they discontinued that line of Model 2 ports that the whole thing chalked up to a loss, but it does make sense that Daytona would've done well. Y'know, I'd heard that MAME had been making progress on Model 3 lately, but I haven't been able to find any recent documentation about it. Everything was from about five years ago. Anyway, yeah, I don't care which team makes that breakthrough, so long as it's made.
@SaturnMemories9 жыл бұрын
OriginalName90 Daytona wasn't part of that batch. It came out a year earlier, and may have even been part of the reason why Sega decided to port the those later Model 2 titles. There was progress on M3 emulation in MAME just as recently as a year ago. Look up VilleDevs on KZbin.

This is from the Japanese version of the game. The Japanese version of the Geneva font (denoted as Osaka) was used. It would be later used heavily on many information screens that were aired by television stations on their analog signals as part of the digital switchover in Japan on 24 July 2011…

Nintendo and Sega used to be the KINGS of water sports games. What happened?
@SaturnMemories9 жыл бұрын
+NPC 888 Sega made some of the best arcade and simulation sports titles in their day. The arcade games obviously hold up a lot better. If you like this, give my Sega Ski Super G video a try. I adore that game.

Found out about this and Top Skater last night and tried them out myself today. Both simple but amazingly, addictive fun times. Wish i could've experienced them in a proper arcade with their og control schemes but man, these are 2 titles that really exemplify what charming arcade fun is really all about. Also why is there no official or fan art of Shamoo or Lenny, artists must right this 25 year long wrong

This must have been absolutely incredible in the arcades, Looks amazing. Loving the cheeky pre-ramp jump too :D
@SaturnMemories9 жыл бұрын
+David Heaton If you time those pre-ramp jumps just right, you'll land on the very tip of the ramp and get an insane amount of air when you make the actual jump (which also gives you more points). This is also useful for landing on the final bridge right before the finish line on the expert stage. Unfortunately, I didn't want to risk blowing a 22K score, so I didn't make the attempt.

@ProDaKah9 жыл бұрын
+Ashley Holroyd At the very least, Sega could release a XBLA/PSN compilation of Model 2/Model 3 arcade titles, with this included. Not asking for or expecting it; just saying it would be possible, and quite welcome.

Okay, I never even heard of this game, but why did this never get brought to consoles? Sega needs to stop constantly re-releasing their older collection of games and focus more on bringing their arcade games to current gen platforms.
@SaturnMemories3 жыл бұрын
Probably because the main selling point for the game was that the cabinet had the player stand on a pair of water skis. Not that that it couldn't been adapted for home consoles, but they probably felt it wouldn't have worked super well. As you can see from my video, it's pretty difficult to pull off more than a few tricks on a consistent basis.
