Gale Banks has designed many cold air intake systems that increase horsepower by reducing restriction and keeping temps down, so why does his old Mercury Marauder still have a stock intake? The iDash displays how much horsepower Gale's old daily driver is losing by keeping his intake stock. Luckily, now he drives a twin-turbo Cadillac CT6-V.

Thats the big P71 air filter box, the normal air box is even worse! Easy, cheap power on a crown vic can be found by swapping out for the bottom half of a cop car P71 air box. The air inlet is much larger.

Being able to go to Napa or Autozone to buy a new filter and trashing the old one is the reason why im not changing out my airbox. Yes there are big pod filters that give you an extra 5hp or whatever but the convenience of not washing or needing to buy a replacement (especially when one isnt instantly available) is truly great. Plus a reputable brand does a good job at filtration.

I think the whole point here is that you have to take the entire system and intent into consideration. Gale's not just losing 5hp with the stock setup, hes losing closer to 70 hp because its actually acting as a bottleneck. If adding an aftermarket intake is the only mod you're doing, yeah its just adding cost and inconvenience for minimal benefit. Most people don't need an aftermarker intake or filter.

@@phaetondragon6229 For me personally? Of course not. Because the rest of my car is stock, it doesn't need any additional air flow, and the stock intake is well designed. But one example from one build doesn't make a rule, that's not how science works. Besides Gale just showed in the clip that he IS losing that much based on his data. It all depends on the specific build and intake. If you're adding a lot of power and heavily tuning a car that has a restrictive air box to start with (a lot do as a result of design constraints or wanting to reduce noise for the average daily driver), the intake could very well be impacting power and responsiveness. The point is there's no cheap shortcut to power, bolting on an off-the-shelf intake of course isn't going to do anything by itself, you have to take into account the entire system and tune and modify accordingly.

Also, man I wish I could go back to when I was choosing between a Marauder that needed a little work, and my Mustang project car, I would have gone with the kick ass with class machine, instead of the pain in my butt, yet super cheap to build, Mustang. I doubt I will ever see a deal like the one I turned down again.

Usually there is no vacuum with a stock intake, because there is a hole right before the air box, prevents the engine from hydro locking it run through a big puddle, but takes away power and fuel economy.

I had an import that was designed to run as a stock rally car on the world circuit. And the big conical filter company swore I could gain more power with their intake. Guess what? Someone tested the odd looking stock air intake "designed to promote laminar air flow" versus the aftermarket one. ZERO GAIN from the clowns. Who also were not interested in sending me one do I could dyno test it and share that with the national association. Sometimes, the factory pays money for the best engineers.

This is why it’s so important to run a good logging system. The data available to read from all of the sensors on a modern EFI engine is immense but without a good tool to read and log this information you’re just running blind.
