They usually get paid money by the big names racers because they can post certain times but have never had the stamina to go ish it out. They do a good job of hiding the pain on their faces but when they quit they are wasted plus they have been.breaking the wind for the following rumners.

My advice, as a senior in high school, is to just stay consistent in training. So many kids want to train really hard, including doing doubles, drastically increasing mileage, doing hard/ridiculous workouts, or grinding out easy runs at a fast pace. Eventually, this leads to injury, early peaking, etc. Just trust in the process, and have fun for right now. If you keep on training at a rate that works for you, but also gets in the work you feel is enough for your needs, then keep it at that. Paces, volume, mileage, intensity, etc. will all increase as your skill, knowledge, and speed (and stamina) does. Also, summer mileage is VERY important to a distance runner. Good luck with the rest of your running career!

Listen to your coach, I was stubborn freshman year because I had prior experience with running. Yet my coach has never been wrong. This does depend on the coach however. Also if a run is meant to be easy, actually take it easy. All runners need rest and overdoing it will cause injury.

Seemed like the slower runners that Galen was lapping were getting in the way a bit. I wonder if he could have run faster if they had not been there. He might have gone sub 13 min maybe. He made a brilliant run of it. His face looked so tired at the end. I really enjoyed watching this...but I wish that one commentator wouldn't do a high pitched "Wooooh!" and damage everyone's ears...ha ha. At least they were informed.

It all depends on your qualifier for states. For me to qualify for states I have to be in the top 20% of everyone who runs at regionals, which usually ends up being 20 people going to states per region. A 17:30 sounds like a good time that can make it but I can see even slower times making it also

He was a rabbit or a pacer. In distance races for records, these are sometimes employed to help keep the leaders on pace. They run quite hard to help keep the race at the intended speed, and then drop out because they themselves are not capable of sustaining that kind of pace for the entire distance of the race. This guy in the blue did an exceptional job. He was hitting exactly the pace that was planned for the race, which can be quite difficult, and then when he tired he got out of the way.
