It was Capt. COOPER Master of the Anderson who saw McSorley "skirting closer to the shoals than HE would have sailed". Capt Cooper had feared the Fitzgerald had "bottomed-out". I find it "interesting" that Fred Shannon's video got pulled from YT.The FITZGERALD'S FAMILIES have a LOT OF CLOUT. SHANNON found a crewman on the lake floor next the bow of the ship...and THEY GOT PISSED. First. HE DID NOT HOPE TO FIND THAT. IT WAS THE TUG MASTER AND HIS SON'S "COMP" RIDE...SHANNON PAID FOR THAT EXPEDITION OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET..HE WAS *NOT* LOOKING FOR THE CREW.. HE WAS GOING TO PUT STILLS FROM THE DIVE IN HIS BOOK...BUT HE HAD THE BALLS TO INTERVIEW A COUPLE OF LONGTIME CREW MEMBERS WHO HAD PREDICTED DISASTER FOR THE FITZGERALD.. BECAUSE MCSORLEY "WOULDNT GO TO ANCHOR FOR NUTHIN. HE WAS A "ROUGH WEATHER SKIPPER." A LOT OF THINGS THAT WERE WRONG WITH THE FITZ WERE DISCLOSED ON THAT VIDEO. BUT THE FAMILIES GOT IT PULLED. A SHAME.

The lecture is wonderful, very informative... but I do need to knit-pick one point. According to old maritime language rules, no one can 'drive' a boat. Driving is for horses and autos. For a boat, it depends on the type of propulsion. The common terms are sail, row, pilot, steer, navigate. Aircraft get the term 'pilot' from watercraft. Am I being too picky... probably. I just hate to see the old vocabulary die out. It should be preserved in some way along with other maritime history. Example, maritime language history, 'boat' and 'ship' are some of the last words in the English language that still have a gender, the are properly associated with female pronouns.

Sorry to be pedantic, but I think you mean nit-pick, rather than "knit-pick". No wool involved.

An exception to the female pronoun rule was the battleship Bismarck. Captain Lindermann told Admiral Lutjens that a ship as large and powerful as Bismarck could only be masculine.

@@TempoDrift1480 "That damn song" is THE DAMN REASON THIS SHIPWRECK STANDS OUT FROM THE JILLIONS OF *OTHER* GREAT LAKES SHIPWRECKS. IT ALSO PROVIDED FUNDS FOR THE GUY IN THE NUTE SUIT TO GO DOWN AND SWAP A BELL ENGRAVED WITH THE NAMES OF THE CREWMEMBERS FOR THE FITZ'S BELL. I WAS BLESSED TO HAVE MET GORDON LIGHTFOOT AT AN AFTERSHOW MEET 'N' GREET (I WON MY PASS ANSWERING A TRIVIA QUESTION POSTED BY A LOCAL RADIO STATION). I HAD ALSO BEEN FRONT ROW CENTER AT GORD'S SHOW A COUPLE YEARS LATER...MY TREAT FOR GOING INTO REMISSION FROM CANCER...AND HE REACHED DOWN FROM THE STAGE *WAY* DOWN-I'M 4'9". AND PRESSED MY HAND BETWEEN BOTH HIS, SMILING INTO MY EYES. WHEN HE RELEASED MY HAND THE GUITAR PICK HE'D BEEN USING WAS IN MY PALM. I CRIED LIKE A CHILD. GORD'S GONE NOW...BUT THE CRAPSTORM HE WENT THRU BEING NIT-PICKED INTO CHANGING THE LYRICS OF THE SONG WAS EPIC..BUT *HE* NEVER LOST HIS INNATE GRACE.... SOMETHING A PERSON WHO'S NEVER WRITTEN A GENUINELY IMMORTAL SONG COULDNT POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND.
