Years ago there was a keeper in that light house they built that very well to take that kind of wave pounding ! That had to be a bit unnerving to be in that building during a storm like that .

@@susanpugh130 Michigan can get crazy but not as much as Superior. LM is a beautiful lake from Holland north. What is crazy is how dangerous Lake Erie can be. It is so shallow that not very much wind will whip it up pretty good.

I remember going up to Duluth around this same time in 2013 and having a similar thing going on. My family and I stayed at The Inn on Lake Superior and after two days, everything was covered in a layer of ice over an inch thick along the boardwalk. It was cool.

same here.....the thought of being in a nice cosy log cabin during a blizzard, or in a lighthouse during a big storm is genuinely appealing. difficult to find the latter though since practically all lighthouses these days are no go areas for everyone but maintenance crews.

I’ve always had an attraction to high waves but I also was quite cautious so I didn’t get swept away. When we went to Aruba several times the north shore and sand dunes were magnificent areas to watch the waves coming in and crashing into the island. I was always amazed that it seemed like every 5th wave was the largest one. This video is of course on the Great Lakes and I will never forget when my uncle and I went up to Lake Erie and as we pulled in I saw the warning flags were out and I was seeing 6-8foot white caps. But my uncle was in the Navy and this didn’t scare him. As we were going out of the harbor people were pointing at us and laughing. We literally spent as much time out of the water as in the water that day but yet here I am to write about it.

I shipped out on the Paul Tiejen which was a Steinbrenner owned boat on about April 20 in 1977. The made it up to Duluth before the end of April and at that time there was still ice two feet thick in harbor and along the coast. A tug had to come in to get us through although there were paths through the ice from previous ships. Point being that the lack of ice there now is a direct consequence of global heating!! And at the rate we are going there will be no ice in the Arctic during the summer either. When we lose the Arctic the natural mechanism to moderate the climate will be gone and we can will see an additional warming of 0.6 C above what we are already seeing.

Mud and sand getting kicked up from the lake bottom by the waves, plus it’s currently flooding in almost all the rivers leading into the lake, and the pine trees are waking up, lots of sap dripping into the water as they prepare for summer. The pines give all the rivers leading into the lake a natural brown coloration. Only reason the lake is clear is because of all the clams and mussels in it, cleaning it. Slight bit of pollution from the port but not enough to turn the lake brown at all
