I felt that I just had to comment. I came across the channel by accident but have been glued to it since. Love the humour as well as the presentation style. I'm hoping that at some point you might do a basic geology lesson for us numpties who know nothing. I must admit to looking at the website and toying with how I would work a claim.... I'm a hotelier in the Cotswolds in the UK, so quite how I thought I could make that happen is beyond me. My dream moment was short lived but if you ever did a working learning break for people I'd love to learn more. Its absolutely fascinating.

I'm curious! You said that the olivine turns red or rusty when it close to the surface of the bedrock. My question is does it matter if the bedrock you are cracking open does it matter if it's in the sun facing south. I'm finding it all being rusty in color. I'm also curious if I remove the top layer of boulders to get down to less exposed bedrock if I might find better clusters sockets of olivine? And peridot. Also the bedrock is an old deposit, there are no catacombs above the bedrock field I'm working.

Dan next time you are drilling Basalt vacuum up the dust and mix it with water and put it on house plants, fruit trees and the vegetable garden if you have one. The point to this experiment is that basalt is rich in the trace elements plants need and it is very good for plant growth. You might find that it could be a new source of income if you could crush and grind basalt to a powder.

Bruh. I remember when I got into rocks. Me and my dad were at some garden stone place to get a big ass rock for our front lawn. And there was just random rock. Just looked normal. But, coming out the side was this perfectly transparent, 3 inch long, forest green crystal. And I was like, “my god. Those just exist in nature. I wanna find one.”
@tomkzinti27603 жыл бұрын
Dan, you really need to consider what you're doing when you oversensationalize everything you find over and over and over. It's that good old story of the boy who cried wolf - except that now, it's a man crying 'gorgeous crystal!' or 'huge nugget!' or 'super gemmy' or 'unbelievable treasure'! After a while, it gets old. When you really have a good look up close at the stuff you're crowing about, it usually ends up being fairly vanilla and underwhelming. Let's face it, peridot is one of the cheapest, boring gemstones out there and the ones you're picking up here resemble boogers more than birthstones. Crow about coloration when you find something grass-green and super rare, not these mildly straw-colored granules! Calling something beautiful isn't wrong, but when you call everything beautiful, what really is? We're not all third graders and you're not our teacher. Can we get a touch more realism and less exaggerating? I think you can do it without reducing views or sales, just give it a try. Thaaaank yooouuuu

That fine grained blue basalt looks familiar to me. Basalt is pretty much THE host rock of the Hawaiian islands. In a'a or pahoehoe flavors... Hawaiian lava is basalt. Peridot (olivine) is the only thing I can find here on maui...land is too young, and the central Pacific hotspot doesn't vomit up the same stuff the west coast mainland did. plenty small olivine crystals - larger gem quality is pretty rare. I do have a few nifty blue basalt samples with embedded olivine crystals in them, Amazing what you find when digging around here and a jobsite is using using a hoe ram on a backhoe to break up old lava flows for construction. Kinda like your feather wedges, only not as precise... oh... and commerical blasting - I found some pretty cool olivine bearing basalt after blasting the foundations for the second phase of the windfarm I work at. Jumped down in the holes and had a look when they blasted and excavated the holes. Found some cool stuff. The scientist in me couldn't pass up the opportunity. Also, We do have a ton of iron rich magnetite nodules all over. Makes me wonder - had we left the hawaiians alone alone long enough, would they have figured out they had basket fulls of iron rich ore just laying around on the ground? Someday I might try to make a knife blade in the Japanese tahmagane fashion using these nodules to see if i can...

Dan can I set you a challenge? You have hear of Jason from Greek mythology and his golden fleece. Only a story It's lost knollage. Well it's actually reference to mine techniques. Can you test this theory on your channel and see if it works. Experimental archaeology. Place sheepskin on the bed of steam/shallow river. Then place rocks on it and around it so the flow of the water goes over the skin naturally panning out any impurities . Any gold should get caught in the hair giving you a golden fleece. Can you see if this actually works on one of your claims. I watched a very old documentary about old mine tricks and this technique was used briefly for the cameras on a mountain stream in Wales UK and they got flecks of gold out of it

Hey Dan, how about slicing it off and freezing it in a vaccum chamber box, it would split it.. along the fissures, and can they sonic bath it or set off a fire cracker in there ? That splits a beer bottle. Pop it in a sonic bath and then freeze it solid.. make the water cloose to freezing and then run a liquid nitrogen around it and sort of flash freeze inner out ward so it splits and not compresses.. inner bottom up. Might be a real time saver on that one in many ways, as well as clean it maybe and the dust would be off them , be able to tell the gem quality ones and sections really quick. Hey, we shatter kidney stones . And it's already been freeze separations if we Xray and tap to the Big crystals without crushing them in a rock crusher.. ya know? And putting them in the sonic bath would pop them all off the surface , And if we depth charge them after a small bore.. or slice , a brake press with a wedge like a log splitter on a floor jack something or other would cut it along the saw score line? High sonic variant will have them fall out like sand when split too maybe? It already has air space in there huh? Yeah ice after the split off .. stone hydraulic splitters and a scoring saw.. press it down to a few hendered pounds and then whack the pin.. lots of ways. Electro bonding.. as long as the metal is sort of within the spaces.. ya know? ? So.. even a paste would sort of be cool too. And it might give a shimmer depth look too depending on crystal size .. when polished off.. If the crystals were all touching, vaccum tight, it would probably show light from the weirdest ways. Very pretty I'm sure, and a layer can be done too maybe since the metals will be fusing... Anyway. Making drill bits .. we ever think of that? High pressure, easy to pour and form, and magneticly quench bond them.. the problem is the bots and such.. and I can already tell we have a lot and need to polish a bunch of them.. And if we have the right clay, and the right depth on the two plates, we can even get a semi uniform bead side. Squares even possibly. Lots of stuff can be done with it. And it will look and be fairly smooth polished.. a microscope to see which kind of sand silt mud it is.. Diamond or what not... wet it and put the other larger crystals and plate roll but not crush it like flour and roll it around under the plates. The powder would be lubricating, use olive oil or vegetable oil since it's viscous and thick if need be and can be boiled out easy, steam spray it off the stones and there you are, tell all what you're dealing with..
@b_uppy2 жыл бұрын
Get the harmonics right and the crystals will free nicely You need a big cloth underneath when using a chisel. Save some work an possibly big crystals that'd get lost otherwise. Otherwise if they fall they maybe impossible to find...
@mattmoore13113 жыл бұрын
On a more serious note, I suspect you'd like your chisels much more if they were about half as long. A short chisel is counter-intuitive. You feel like you're going to hit your hand, but the reality is it's easier to control, usually you can rest your hand on the rock, and if you have a glove on, can usually control the spalls with the palm. Give it a try. :)
