It's so sad that Gallagher's most memorable legacy tends to be The Sledge-o-matic routine...Of course it in and of itself makes a wonderful commentary on commercialism and consumerism, but those are usually lost in the enjoyable chaos of flying food. The VAST MAJORITY of Gallagher's stuff was his observational comedy...getting people to think about the common absurdities of life...Couple his genius writing with an amazingly gifted delivery and you've got a superior comedian.

Thank you for explaining that.

What was once a wacky parody of the Chop-O-Matic gadget eventually became an albatross around his neck, and (sadly) the one and only thing he's ever remembered for now. I personally thought his observational humor was great, but by the end of the '80s, along came Andrew "Dice" Clay and Sam Kinison, who quickly made him yesterday's news and a corny novelty act, from which he never quite recovered.

You're right. It is sad that his one hack bit overshadowed his other hack bits.
