I had an ERCP procedure a week ago, but during that, my pancreas became inflamed, which required me to stay in the hospital for 4-5 days. I have sickle cell disease Additionally, I have a bacterial infection for which the hematologist has prescribed medication. After a week in the hospital, I came home, and everything else seemed fine except for some upper abdominal pain. It's been 4-5 days since I've been home, and every day, for 6-7 hours, I experience severe pain in the upper right side of my abdomen, just below the ribs. Initially, I thought it might be due to my sickle cell disease, but now I'm questioning whether it could be due to my gallstones, as stones were found in both my common bile duct (CBD) and gallbladder. After the ERCP, a stent was placed in my CBD. Since being discharged, I've been on many medications for my gallstones, liver function, bacterial infection, and gastric problems. Could you help me understand the possible cause of this persistent pain in my upper right abdomen, which lasts for like a almost whole day and often worsens at night?

Thank you for sharing your experience. Given your recent ERCP procedure and the presence of gallstones, there are a few possible reasons for your persistent upper right abdominal pain. It could be due to post-ERCP pancreatitis, gallstone-related issues, or even a biliary infection. Since your pain worsens at night and lasts several hours, I recommend discussing your symptoms with your healthcare provider. They may want to conduct further evaluations, such as imaging or blood tests, to determine the exact cause and provide appropriate treatment. Take care, and I hope you feel better soon!

@@Learnwithcapsa Thank you for this insightful information. I will be planning to visit my gastroenterologist and hematologist soon, but I have some fears. During my ERCP and the week I spent in the hospital, I had about 5 IVs placed. Two of those IV sites became inflamed, and one vein is still causing pain. I’m worried that I might have to go through the same process again, which is mentally exhausting. Living with sickle cell disease is not easy, especially when my age-only 20 years old. However, maintaining a positive attitude and focusing on a hopeful outcome is something I can control. Once again, thank you for your support and the information you provided.

It’s completely understandable to feel worried after your recent experiences, but it’s great to hear you’re focusing on maintaining a positive attitude. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Wishing you all the best for your upcoming appointments!
