This balmy paradise, balancing just above the equator, is enjoying a major tourism boom right now - thanks to its misty mountains, palm-fringed shores and Insta-worthy tea trails.
One of its most underrated gems is the beautiful city of Galle. With much of the buzzy west coast becoming increasingly modernised, this colonial townscape is just the ticket for travellers who want to take a step back in time to Sri Lanka’s exotic past.
Galle (pronounced ‘gawl’ in English) is situated on the southwestern tip of the country, about three hours coastal drive from the bustling capital city of Colombo. Few places can boast as varied a history as Galle, and at its beating heart is its old fortified quarter - a walled cape which has stood since the early sixteenth century, through the Colonial periods of the Portuguese, Dutch and British.
