How wonderful. The amount of dedication, energy, money and sheer perseverance put into restoring this magnificent instrument demands our profound thanks and admiration. Although much work has still to be done, what has been achieved is simply amazing. I can recall being at my boarding school in the early 1960s here in the UK and spending hours reading the section devoted to pipe organ history in the' Oxford Companion to Music' and drooling over the picture of the massive Atlantic City organ Console. The article mentioned Senator Emerson Richards and that the organ was only partly functioning and many volumes would be required to even begin to describe this great wonder of the musical world. I could never have imagined or thought at that time that this instrument would eventually emerge, phoenix like, and once more be heard and appreciated by pipe organ enthusiasts and an ever growing number of newly initiated enthusiasts and supporters.

Hi Titus: I,too, am from the UK and read with interest about the AC organ, never thinking that a decade later I would visit the organ and in 1998 play the organ. Back then, only the right chamber was functional. Now look at the progress !!! Quite remarkable. KUDOS to ACCHOS followed by HORC. Without them, this would not have happened.

Impressive that they are working again. Listening to extremely high pressure reeds always makes me think that the high pressure is only that high to impress on the stoplist. Some of the best have a smoother sound, still incredibly magnificent. In the final analysis, 100 inches makes them sound like shredding roofing tin. The honker at St. John the Divine is magnificent, but exactly half the wind pressure, and it is as powerful as any reed could be imagined.

You want to hear the State Trumpets on 50" wind over the west end doors of St Paul's Cathedral in London made by my old firm of NP Mander Ltd! The echo and sound is just bloody stupendous! I know there were claims that Emerson Richards was unhappy with these vs. the other two 100" stops and quit using them entirely. Is there a reason known? They sound lovely to me, and probably work extremely well with a big chorus. Did Richards just want them to be louder? The other two certainly are.

It would be interesting to get an actual decibel measurement on those sounds, both in the chamber and in the hall.

It's not actually known. The Grand Ophicleide, the loudest of the four 100" reeds, maxed out a SPL meter placed 1 meter from the pipes. So it's more than 130 db.

Only on a very large organ would these stops have a home. This is not a criticism, just a reflection on having so many ranks, there are only so many sounds that an organ can make before the designer turns to the more unusual sounds. Not the sort of stop you would want on a 30 rank instument.

WOW!!! Am I correct in assuming there are devices that hold the pipes down so they don't blow out of the chest holes? It looks like it.
@JIMD63703 жыл бұрын
@jim, actually there to keep the pipes sealed, worst that would happen at the pressure is they'd get unseated and fall over.

@@pipedreamin 100" wg sounds an awful lot, but in fact is less than 3 and a half pounds per square inch! 1 psi is 27 1/4" wg ( wg stands for water gauge not to be confused with HG which is pressure in inches of mercury)
@pipedreamin3 жыл бұрын
@@samrodian919 Yeah, I get that it's not a whole lot of pressure, i just remember from that book I read that the pipes were strapped down because of the pressure. I take it that wasn't a live video of the Tuba Maxima chamber as it was being played. That has to be loud enough to make a camera lens shatter from such a short range. I can't imagine how they can protect the ears of a tuner sufficiently to get close enough to tune the darned things.
