There is a meme out there. It shows Rory, Amy, and the Doctor. The caption reads as follows: "Amy's Boys." "One is the man of her dreams. A hero of impossible bravery who is older than he looks and who's exploits are the stuff of legend." "The other is the Doctor."

I remember at the time on the original airing of Flesh and Stone, people caught the "continuity error" of Eleven having his jacket on during that moment when he went back. Moffat played us for fools. Gotta keep a sharp eye and ear out with him in charge...!

I remember this as well! Folks on the boards were complaining about this continuity error. 😄. But it was not an error. And Moffat, having at one time posted on The Who boards before he was show runner, had to know the boards would blow up over this. The sly dog.

Often skipped over is just how clever the "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" line is. The TARDIS is totally all of those things as well as that being a traditional wedding theme, and Amy and Rory's wedding was the perfect anchor for the Doctor to remain in the rebooted universe.

There was a time when The Doctor sincerely thought the ideal life for a woman was to be married in 20th century (give or take two hundred years) England, and no longer have male friends or go or do anything else. That was a philosophy he really believed in and lived by. Then he experienced the 21st century, not for the first time but a version of it that wasn't shit, and changed. Only took him a thousand years.

Some people complain about Moffat's push towards the dramatic and it indeed does often seem like his plots are all about building to big dramatic moments. He may even skip steps in order to get to them. I still insist though to any critics that there is a reason why Karen Gillian has become one of the biggest stars on the planet. There is a reason why Arthur Darvil isn't just limited to roles in U.K. soap operas. Doctor Who companions haven't normally translated to non-British or big-screen roles even when they were talented actors. Stephen Moffat let these kids shine and if you were to find yourself as a companion on this show Moffat should be your man. By the way, there is an earlier episode where River Song says to the Doctor, "Have you done the Pandorica yet?" so it was pretty clear that at a minimum she would survive.

I love the different dynamics between the Doctor and Amy compared to the Doctor and Rory. Amy's the one who trusts and idolises the Doctor and Rory's the sceptic who challenges him. It would have been dull if they were both "groupies," for the Doctor. It also makes sense. For Amy its obvious that she grew up with this fantasy image of this hero she met once as a child. But for Rory that "fantasy Doctor" would have been a rival for Amy's affections and one he would struggle to live up to. So it makes sense that he'd challenge the real Doctor in a way that would prove he is not the perfect man from Amy's fantasy. I also think it says something that Rory is a nurse who spent his days being bossed around by doctors. In his dream in "Amy's Choice," he is now a doctor. All part of his insecurity and desire to live up to Amy's fantasy man. There's some nice subtext in their character arcs and sometimes I feel it gets overlooked next to Moffat's timey-wimey shenanigans when people discuss his writing.

This was one of my absolute favorite finales. It had a bit of everything. And Matt Smith is easily my favorite Doctor. I haven't had a problem with any, but I just feel his Doctor shows the most growth out of any. At this point he's the 'oldest' version of the Doctor and also played by the youngest actor. The Doctor still shows his youthful boyish side with the dancing and goofiness, but then he can get serious like with his monologue. I can't wait for the next season. It's one of my favorites and has some terrific episodes. Ohhhh I'm excited.

And now ‘The Drunken Giraffe’ dance is canon! Don’t miss the Christmas Special before Series 6, it’s one of the best imho. And the next few episodes are really, really good! If I recall correctly Stephen Moffat, when he became show runner went through River’s whole timeline with Alex Kingston before they started filming, so she knew exactly where River’s timeline went, starting with her dying in the library. Nobody else had a clue. And despite being asked she never told any of the cast even though they pressed her on it. Spoilers!

I think Paula has Steven Moffat just right. The extravagant, emotional rollercoaster, combined with twisty convolutions of plot are what he's all about. You may or may not find that all a bit wearing after a while. But some amazing things will keep on happening throughout his run.
@carn95074 жыл бұрын
My fave Who finale! I love it so much. The mixture of time-traveling and the fairy-tale feel. And so many quotable lines too. My faves being "Hello everyone, I'm Amy's imaginary friend...but I came anyway" and "we're all just stories in the end..." And that clever bit with the present Doctor going back to the Angels episode to talk to Amy that explains why he had his jacket in that scene when in that episode (when the angels episode was first broadcast here in the UK a decade ago, many pondered it a continuity issue/mistake til this one explained it). I love it. :)
@christianwise6374 жыл бұрын
"We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good way eh? Because it was you know. It was the best." Ah, The Big Bang. Much like the previous episode this finale is a wonderful emotional rollercoaster, going from wacky hijinks to intense action to heartbreaking tragedy to the most exhilarating punch-the-air ending to any series thus far. It's definitely peak Moffat writing, with the timey wimey twists and turns coming thick and fast, fitting perfectly into the story without overcomplicating the narrative and risking losing the audience. The jokes are immensely funny, and the various action setpieces are loads of fun; the scene in which River threatens the Dalek is spine-tingling, and praise has to be given to Alex Kingston for managing to make her feel genuinely dangerous. Meanwhile, the way the cracks in time story arc is resolved in this episode is brilliant. I love the way the story tied together the various plot threads (the cracks, the Pandorica, the exploding TARDIS, that one scene from Flesh and Stone where the Doctor inexplicably gets his jacket back) and uses them to create a perfect satisfying conclusion to the series. Ultimately, the emotional moments between our now three main characters is what makes this episode so great. The scene where Rory pledges to look after Amy in the Pandorica is a very touching moment, and seeing his absolute devotion and loyalty to a woman who, let's be honest, hadn't always treated him that well was so sweet. The "final goodbye" between Amy and the Doctor was so heartbreakingly sad, and played very well by Karen Gillan and Matt Smith, who also gives a fantastic performance in the scene where he speaks to the young Amelia before being erased from time. You genuinely feel like the Doctor is a tired and ancient alien wearing the face of a young man, and it's beautiful. And then the wedding; I don't think I've ever watched the scene where Amy uses the old wedding phrase to bring the Doctor back into existence without getting this big stupid grin on my face. After four series ending with a massive downer, whether it be due to a regeneration, a companion leaving, a massive body count or some combination of the three, it's wonderful to see a series end on a happy note. The companions are married, the universe is saved, everyone who was erased from existence is restored, and the TARDIS trio are free to set off on brand new adventure. The perfect fairytale ending to this perfect fairytale series

Rory remembers being plastic! So it was all there for him and her. The episode Amy’s choice foretold all of this. In fact, there were two different timelines Amy and Rory were living in “Amy’s choice”. But now they do have memory from two different timelines. The one with the crack and the one without it. Moffat coined the phrase “timey wimey “ when he wrote “blink” and that is how he writes. P.S. Rory is awesomeness!

Did anyone below talk about how this would have played out had Moff talked David Tennant into doing one more year? That was the original plan, to have Tennant's last year be Moff's first so that EVERYTHING didn't change between seasons four and five, but Tennant got an offer he couldn't refuse so enter Matt Smith. Anyway, the original plan that Moff pitched to Tennant was that the very first scenes with young Amelia would have been with Tennant in a raggedy, messed up costume that would never be explained until the end of the season when due to *plot stuff that Moff hadn't worked out yet* the bits with young Amelia would be revealed to have been the Tenth Doctor's final moments. Everything went in another direction when a new Doctor happened though, and the idea of a later Doctor preceding his earlier self in the story would happen... well, you'll see soon enough.

Then Rory dies and Amy realises how much he means to her just as he's wiped from existence. Then he gets recreated solely from Amy's memories, albeit as an Auton, who can see no bad in him whatsoever. Then he's turned back into a human during the 2nd big bang, and hey presto, you've now got the perfect boyfriend.
