This is arguably the most important episode of TOS in terms of defining what Star Trek would come to be about. It's our first time seeing the Federation as a multi-species cooperative instead of Space America, the first time treating aliens as cultures with distinct perspectives rather than allegories or versions of Space Yellow Peril, the first time really delving into a character's life outside of being a Starfleet officer, and the first time using the Enterprise as a Space Holiday Inn for conventions. All major themes in TNG and onward.

And it ultimately comes to define the core of the Federation, with Humans, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellerites being the founding species. What I love about it is that this episode led to it becoming a fan theory that these were the founding members of the Federation and then the show went on to confirm that fan theory in Enterprise. Similarly, both Sulu and Uhura's first names were never defined in TOS and came out of fandom, only to eventually be canonised (Sulu's first name is Hikaru and didn't get said on screen until Star Trek 6. Uhura was long considered to have the first name of Nyota and that wasn't canonised until the "reboot" movie in 2009!) I love it when the show and the fandom has those little feedback loops.

Space America was a lot easier and cheaper to pull off in TOS, rather than spend the time & money on make-up and other facial attachments. Also, it's not really that easy coming up with new & believable aliens, who don't come off as being ridiculous.

Well the Warp Scale was changed between TOS and TNG. In TNG, Warp 10 was supposedly infinite speed, while in TOS, The warp number, cubed, is the multiple of the speed of light the ship is traveling, so Warp 10 would be 1000 times the speed of light.

Everybody talks about Mark Lenard playing Sarek, but I think the really inspired casting choice was Jane Wyatt (listed first in the credits as Miss Jane Wyatt...). Anybody watching this when it first aired would have instantly recognized her as the mother in the "50s sitcom "Father Knows Best", a role she won 3 Emmy awards for.

Warp 10 means something different in TOS than it does in TNG and after (Oh you'll see)... Between TOS and TNG warp engines were upgraded to a point where the old measurement scale wasn't practical anymore. In TOS Warp 10 is just "really frikken fast" in TNG and the other shows its infinite velocity where you are going so fast you are everywhere and everywhen. The gaps between 9.1, and 9.2 get immensely bigger on a curve. After warp 9.9 you start getting ships with top speeds of 9.95, 9.975, 9.999 but warp 10 is only theoretical... Or is it???
@mmattson8947
@mmattson8947 Жыл бұрын
"By Any Other Name" had the Enterprise accelerated to Warp 11. (A trip that would take thousands of years at normal maximum warp would take 300 years at warp 11.) As Callum said, in TOS each additional warp factor is several times faster than the previous number. For TNG, they use a scale where 10 is infinite speed. (Probably influenced by Einstein's special relativity equations, where it would take an infinite amount of force to get an object with a rest mass up to the speed of light.)
@chrissonofpear1384
@chrissonofpear1384 Жыл бұрын
For instance, warp 12 is equal to around 9.3 or 4, and warp 14.1 is equal to around warp 9.7, new scale.
@Senkoau
@Senkoau 2 ай бұрын
I prefer the old scale myself. Going Warp factor 50 as a speed increase from Warp Factor 30 sounds less ridiculous than ships going Warp factor 9.9, 9.99, 9.997, 9.997227.

P.S., Vulcans have 200 year lifespans so in TNG, roughly 100 years later, Sarek would still be alive but Amanda wouldn't. This episode is long before Sarek's current wife Perrin would have been born. Also Bones is my favorite too, because underneath his grouchy, cynical exterior he was the most deeply humane character underneath his surface abrasiveness. Seemingly a dickhead with a heart of gold!

Love that leaning on the fourth wall bit with McCoy. He's PROBABLY speaking to Chapel but it still feels fun. Also there's a bit in the novel "Sarek" where the novel takes place after Star Trek 6 but has Sarek himself, in a rare distracted flashback (the novels love to give Sarek's inner monologue to make it clear that he has MORE emotions than Spock, but he keeps control of them a lot better due to age), remember Amanda choosing to just say she _expected_ Sarek to remarry after she was gone, a little after her fortieth birthday.

The finger gestures that you found so cute was something that Mark Lenard (Sarek) came up with for the episode. He'd talked with Nimoy who explained the Vulcan salute and how Vulcans use their hands. If you ever watch some episodes of the Enterprise series dating from the earlier 2000s, you can see better looking Tellarites and Andorians. The Andorians' make up even has the moving antannae that look very good. It's very fun to see humans interacting with those before the creation of the Federation... The Tellarite still look quite ugly but "natural ugly", the make up is really good. Tellarite tyîcally like to engage ina conversation by taunting and insulting you, so to do business or engage diplomatically with them, you mustn't be the type to be offended by any sarcastic remarks... Many younger people nowadays would be very uncomfortable with them... One of the Andorians in Enterprise is a recuring character (Cmdr Shran, so your Shrek wasn't too far off actually; lol) and is played by an actor who plays nummerous characters from TNG, DS9 and Voyager, and Enterprise. In one of Enterprise 3rd season, he even plays TWO different characters in the same episode ! Fortunately, make up is so different that you barely recongnize him if you don't know it is him... The Warp scale wasn't the same back then. It was linear or logarythmic and not exponantial. All changed after Kirk's era eventhough they were testing it in one of the Star Trek movies, calling it "Transwarp" (not to be confused with Borg Transwarp tech that goes even faster and isn't completely working on the same principle). Sarek(s condition in TNG isn't the same, it was mental illness, like Alzheimer. TNG Sarek's wife is named Perrin. She's his second human wife. Vulcans typically live twice as long as humans. You can see Sarek is some of the TOS era movies as well (3, 4 and 6)

Kirk introduces his First Officer, Mr. Spock, obviously proud to show off that a Vulcan, his good friend, is their First Officer. Spock gives them an honourable greeting: "Vulcan honours us with your presence. We come to serve." Sarek ignores a fellow Vulcan, Mr. Spock and turns to the Captain: "Your service honours us, Captain." Kirk replies: "Thank you." But you can see him thinking WTF? a bit irked, his eye starts to glisten. Sarek greets McCoy and as they walk to the next portal, you can see Kirk is upset. Sarek introduces his aides and his wife. She is very pleasant (I don't think Kirk can tell she's not Vulcan at this point) he is softened by her greeting. So he tells them that when they are settled, he's arranged a tour of the ship and, proudly again, tells them Spock will guide them. Sarek just says: "I'd prefer another guide, Captain." "As you wish Ambassador." But his eyes glisten more and we can tell he's angry and I feel that he's thinking he'd like to say "That's twice. Mr. Spock is the finest officer in Star Fleet and, more than that, my best friend! Disrespect him again and, Ambassador or not, you may find yourself WALKING home!" But then he has an idea about how to show how much he means to him and shame this guy, he changes focus from this important man to talk to his friend and make him an offer: "Mr. Spock, we leave orbit in two hours, would you care to beam down and visit your parents?" Spock tells him that they ARE his parents.

My recommendations for Season 1 of DS9 would be Emissary (obviously), A Man Alone, Captive Pursuit, Battle Lines, The Forsaken (just because they love Lwaxana), Duet and In the Hands of The Profits. In those 7 episodes is the best of the first season. They could add Q-less but other than the obvious it isn't a great episode. But in that selection you have the basis for most of the main characters, a good Odo episode, a stand out classic of Duet, and between Emissary, Battle Lines and Hands of the Profits you get to know the setup for Bajor, its politics, it's religion and the drama that comes later.

Concerning the NEXT TOS episode you plan to watch, I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Seen it dozens of times in my 50 years. When TOS went into reruns, after the show was cancelled, it was soooooo popular because even the "bad" episodes were actually quite "good". Fans have their favorites. Don't expect it to be bad, it's just not on many fan "top 10" lists. There are only a few TOS episodes that I can think of which I'd rate under 5/10. That would be an interesting poll.... TOP 10 WORST TOS EPISODES, picked by the fans.

while i agree that the episode in question is barely above average, its a fine example of late season 3, the end period of the series. they havent seen anything nearly so late before, so its a fine choice all-around.

@@ice-iu3vv several of the best episodes are in season 3... ALL OUR YESTERDAYS, THAT WHICH SURVIVES, SPECTRE OF THE GUN, FOR THE WORLD IS HOLLOW, THE ENTERPRISE INCIDENT, THOLIAN WEB, PLATOS STEP CHILDREN, WINK OF AN EYE. Most others are still above average. But I never understood the distain for SPOCKS BRAIN. It's not great. But I'd give it 6/10.

Not surprising there's a costume change every scene. Jane Wyatt was a high powered actress in her time. She deserved high status and whatever she wanted.

This was a good one , Marc Lennard played a few roles in Tos. and has of course reprised Sarek And Nurse Chappel is such a different character from From Troi's mum . Of course the costumes of the other races are more convincing nowadays but certainly for the 60s the show was really progressive and the writing and acting overcomes a lot of disbelief . It's. always on tv even now , usually with remastered effects which do help some of the episodes .

This episode began the grand tradition of Spock talking about his family only when he really really has to. For all we know he has 20 or 30 relatives, and no one out of the family knows it's that large.

Just on watching it again recently, did I notice that when Sarek and Amanda, alone in their room, touch fingers, there's the beginning of some hot rubbing going on!

I hope that after the completion Season 7 of TNG, the girls will react to all three seasons of TOS. My hope is that if they do, they’ll get to some memorable episodes like: “The Menagerie” “Arena” “Tomorrow is Yesterday” “Amok Time” “The Ultimate Computer” “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” and a personal favorite of mine… “Court Martial”

I'd like to see your reaction to "The Cage", the original Star Trek pilot with an (almost) unrecognizable cast, but an amazing story.

I can't remember, but did you guys ever react to "The Cage", which was the original Star Trek pilot episode(as opposed to the 2nd Star Trek pilot), that featured Actor Jeffrey Hunter as the U.S.S. Enterprise Capt Christopher Pike, who briefly pre-dated William Shatner's Capt James T. Kirk ? If you're looking for really ancient retro in the Star Trek Franchise, this one might be the one to watch . . . OR, "The Menagerie", which was the 2-part episode in which TOS(the first season) looked back on "The Cage" pilot episode.

I'm not sure why your version of the ep had those hard cuts, but I suspect they were from a copy that was cut for broadcast reruns on local TV stations. They tended to chop them roughly in order to cram in more commercials ($$$).

The Savage Curtain does have a fair amount of cringe and is the source of more than one frequently quoted line. And there is not only a character from Klingon history and one from Vulcan history, but also a very big and real figure in Earth history as well.

Well,if you want to watch a ST-like show with plenty of humor,I suggest The Orville. That is if you like Seth McFarlane's type of humor. Believe there are only 3 seasons so far with about 12 episodes per season so it wouldn't take long to get through. Anyone that has seen it knows it definitely rips off...I mean,was inspired by other ST episodes.
