Had my eye on this one for a while, and it seemed like an easy, relaxed sort of day trip - I'm very glad I got the kayak wet as it was a perfect day to be out.

Well, I think my trip was at least 7 weeks ago! I have been out a few times since, but not on the yak. I was looking for options for an overnighter but I reckon most of the lochs will be frozen over now and very hard going for the sort of thing I enjoy doing - or else I'll get snowed in at the end of some narrow road to nowhere (I can hear the kids sniggering now 😀)

Fantastic scenery, great video work. Looks like an area that hardly sees people and those glides you were kayaking along look as though they could be hiding some real lunkers!

Some of this area is actually pretty accessible and bits of it will get quite busy during the summer months. I completely agree that it looks very fishy, though I don't think it has any reputation as a big fish water. A kayak is pretty good at putting a little distance between you and most of the human race and I'm coming to appreciate that more - even 300 or 400 yards can leave you in largely undisturbed territory🙂

Hi Ash, just a beautiful spot on a beautiful day, and one I've had my eye on for a while - although I didn't expect to get as far upriver as I did. It's not the easiest ground to camp on, but there were one or two possible spots for a future visit. The drive wasn't too bad, although it's mainly pretty slow roads inland from the coast. Overall it was a very relaxing day and far better than my alternative option for the day - painting the hall 👍

Lovely. I assume the bridge was once for an old railway line?

Yes - there was a railway between Dumfries and Stranraer, which must have been quite a scenic route. It's quite a fine bridge really and still very solid looking - all granite, probably from the quarries down at the river Cree.

Nice up there Doug, been up there a few times in the yak but only as far as the wee bridge. If you explore there, there's a small abandoned farm just next to the bridge.

I only made it another 500-600 yards beyond the bridge but it's a very pretty spot and feels a lot more remote than it actually is. Hopefully I get back there next year sometime and explore the farm you mention - I can see it on the map but wasn't sure if it was still in use or not. Might take a trout rod along too!

Getting near the time of year when I sit with a malt or three making vague plans for next season. Spending a bit more time exploring freshwater in Galloway is definitely on the cards, although I think it still takes second place to saltwater for me. I'm just glad that I do have some decent choices available!
