My wishlist for mighty Frank Gambale would be to: 1. Adopt a principle of never playing the same phrase again twice in one song/composition/track (mighty Chick RIP did this very well all the time) 2. Recognise enormous value of having his music mixed in a way that's more balanced and impactful 3. Evolve improvisation which is based around (more recognisably) melodic theming, instead of showcasing his enormous ability to glide up and down scales/arpeggios endlessly (people like Spyro Gyra or Yellowjackets are excellent examples of what I'm calling here 'melodic theming improvisation' - many books could probably be written just on this subject 4. Focus a lot more on 'compositioning' his songs in a way that is 'hook oriented'. This track is one of the most hooky tracks from FG I know of. I would love for FG to have hits like Level 42 has for example, while maintaining the improvisational prowess in that music 5. For FG to develop and evolve a general purpose/direction of creating on theme of some sort. So for example, FG could 'commit' to making 4 albums over next X period of time which fans could look forward to and maybe even part take in co-crating. This kind of an approach (I strongly sense/believe/feel) would give FG a lot more followers and 'barbershop talk' about what FG will come out with next. This has happened with Jacob Collier over the years very nicely 6. Going off point 5, it would be amazing if FG was to 'accept' fan musical idea submissions (I would love to send in a bunch of them) and perhaps 'build' tracks around those musical ideas. I would love to see FG take a 'raw' musical melody from a fan (like me) and 'take it into the stratosphere' with his improvisation, ideation, exploration and general commenting/feedback, etc. I think I might be one of the biggest fans of Frank Gambale in the world, having seen him recently at Ronnie Scott's in London playing that wonderful red guitar and I always get 'left' with the above 6 brainfarts as a takeaway. So, finally, after many many years of pure consumption and admiration, I gathered enough strength to date to post this suggestion from the bottom of my heart. Love you Frank! You're the man! Thank you for being who you are and reminding us that practice, calmness, consistency, love and caring get the job done, especially in the music world. Biggest hugs from London!
