Dang I love quail. I'm in east Mesa and there are always a few families passing through my yard each day to stop at the birdbath I have on the ground. I love watching the babies grow from tiny cuties into what are basically skinny 'teenage' punks - like for real omg with their tryhard mohawks so gangley and awkward! - and then into 'young adults'. And the way they are always running to catch up with the others, or turning back around to make sure not to lose those who follow is so wholesome. Sometimes an adult male ends up at my sliding glass door pecking at his reflections while the mom and babies mill around waiting for him to figure out there isn't actually another quail there, but it takes him soooooo long.

What sort of bird bath do you use? I'm trying to get them to come into my yard. I bought a baby tub to set on the ground but they seem so shy here

@@untamed1958 It's concrete, made it myself which was a HUGE hassle. I think a baby tub might be too deep, it should really only hold 2-3 inches at most of water and you should put some fist -sized and smaller rocks in it. That's so when the babies get in they can get back out again. I learned that the hard way. :( If you google "shallow serving bowl" it should give you some pictures of things that are about the right depth. You can probably find something the right size at a local thrift shop for a few bucks. Don't get anything really dark, otherwise the water can end up too hot. Good luck!

I was interested in your TV broadcast this morning. We have a healthy covey here in Golden Valley. I have been observing them for 20 years outside my windows and doors. I have several amazing stories of their activities. One tough bird ! The best to you Ms. Nelson.

I live down in Yuma. In a rural area. There are a couple good size covey in my neighborhood. In the morning and evening I can play call videos and they'll chatter together and call back. It's too cool.

I commend AZGF for their efforts. You have to ask yourself, where do the golf course quail overpopulations go? There is a limit to what any golf course will sustain. I hardly consider this a risky venture. Why not take your chances relocating these quail as having them struggle or expire on/around a golf course? Furthermore, over-population drives a healthy number of predators into an otherwise unnatural environ - the golf course. As such, we hear more and more about coyotes and their impact on these residential areas. Obviously, the core quail numbers will remain on the golf course as a sustainable resource. In-other-words, relocation of the reasonable number will have no negative impact. I think this is a GREAT project, having witnessed huge coveys of Gambels on the golf courses in close proximity to these release sights. Once again...kudos to everyone involved!

I'm in Ahwatukee. We've had two successful hatches in our yard. But yeah, we count the chicks every year and I'm guessing 90% chick mortality. This past winter seemed to help and we have a decent population. The lack of monsoon storms isn't helping however. Plus the city has clear cut the wash that runs by our house this week. Lot's less cover might affect mortality rates.
