Gambling addictions grow in America as sports betting becomes popular

Around 2.5 million adults around the U.S. have a severe gambling problem, according to the National Council on Problem Gambling. Nick Wolny, a managing money editor at CNET, joins CBS News with more on the rise of gambling addictions.

I live in nevada, and there was a reason we had it in our state and only our state alone for so long. You're going to see a lot of problems develop as it's marketed as consumerism.

People can overcome a gambling addiction. The problem is that the gambling industry is aimed at targeting poor and addicted gamblers.

@John-PaulHunt-wy7lf Buying SP 500 index funds/etfs have averaged around 8% annual increase over the long run. Thats safe strategy. But someone buying a trending stock without doing research is gambling. You really can't go wrong if you buy the stocks that BlackRock and the politicians buy.

This isnt news. Sports betting has always been a thing. It just "looks cleaner" (no running to bookies etc) and is more easily accessible now

no, sorry, it's not the same as it was 10 years ago as some claim that it's just more legal now - this is really bad because you can connect your checking & savings to it and you can transfer hundreds, thousands to casino and sports betting sites with no fees for doing so, and because you can't see the money, just digits, it disappears til you realize, you just blew your rent!!!!!!!!! (first hand experience doing that and went oh no, don't do that again)

The more you supply people with a potentially bad thing, the more addicts and victims you will have. All for the love of money. Soon you wont hear about this anymore . It will just be accepted, like all the other addictions , visited upon us. I remember when internet addiction was talked about , in the early years

I've been the casino twice. Just played the slots. Set a spending limit, when I was done, I was done. Both times ended up winning a few hundred bucks. Difference is I know I was extremely lucky and that's not an everyday thing.

I don't gamble but I don't see any issue with people doing this as a habit, game, or even addiction. As long as it's not harming anyone else. But if you're a parent and gambling your children's college fund on sports, that's really on him, not gambling itself.

They both could lead to early death, specifically due to the suicide rates for gambling addicts that is a lot higher than normal. With that said, many will argue gambling addiction could actually be worse.
