Nice to have another mechanic on board. I agree with you, you could spend thousands of dollars on spares for every possibility, and it's wise to be prudent, but there is a point where you just have to use your best judgement. Or.........you could tow an entire 2nd copy of your boat behind you. Slower going though.

Another great video. One can't have a spare for everything on the boat, judgement comes into play. Easy to "Monday morning quarterback" decisions but fact is Teal managed the situation well and got the boat to port safely. I don't know of many who just carry spare hydraulic rams "just in case". Again, well done Basik crew.

I loved the repair with Emma, the mechanic. I am fortunate to have two daughters, one of whom showed an early and lasting interest in tool use. I built her a workbench when she was eight. It is something fathers should always do with their children. As humans, we are tool makers and tool users and learning these things at a young age is so important. Thank you again.

Hi Teal, this is a nice solution for the emergency steering system. But the reduction is still 2 to 1, because the additional blocks are fixed. To increase the reduction further, you'd need to connect the blocks to the coupling tube. However, if it works this way it works.

I was going to say the same thing. It would be easy to convert to 4:1 by changing the two bottom pulleys to have multiple sheaves. It may work at 2:1 in port, however, underway you might be glad of the extra mechanical advantage.

Don’t let the critics get to you!! You have done an amazing job! This is exactly the reason your taking very short trips down the coast, gives you time to learn your boat. I’m surprised that no cabinets or doors have got loose or you had to remount something. If you started using your boat with every backup part purchased, then might as well bought a new one. Anyways easy to sit at the back of the boat and we can’t understand why we didn’t buy every $1200 part available for this boat, while we are riding for FREE.

You need 6 hydraulic caps. 4 that fit the cylinder fittings and 2 that fit the hose. Mate 2 and 2 and put two caps on the spare cylinder. When changing. Remove one line and cap it. Plug the cylinder . The remove the other line and cap it and plug the cylinder. Everything is sealed and if you did it quick you lost less than half a cup of fluid total.

Ok now... You had the back up all set up, BUT DID YOU TEST IT? As a nice drill, you should see if it takes only your predicted 6min. Now we all, ( us mechanic's) know, and love, the way you work. 6mins really means 18. A fire-drill test of the set up, also so you can "test" it, would be an interesting time check. On you emergency steering system, I think I would have gone with a snap hook or some kind of carabiner to attach the end of the line and the pulleys. Remember, you might have to do this is a rolling sea. It might be interest to see what "major" spare parts you are carrying. (Skip the seals and gaskets.) Alternator ? Full raw water pump ? Bilge pump(s) ? As the years go by, I'm sure you will have a large collection (anything that might corrode from salt air should be sprayed with a corrosion inhibitor and stored in a plastic zipper lock bag).

Hind sight is always 20/20, you managed to be ok and you were not in storm conditions with 30 foot waves breaking. All in all you did well. I know you like using line instead of cable for your emergency steering but SS Cable is much more dependable for emergency use. I just don't know how you would mount the emergency system in storm conditions unless you deployed a sea anchor so you didn't have your stern to the wind. Be safe and plan for the worst is my moto. Best of luck to all of you. Tell your Emma to buy pile worms from the local bait store and you will have a ton of surf perch that are also in the harbor. Can't wait for next weeks new addition.

What I would suggest and we do this on every boat that is ocean bound is this. Install the other spare ram in the other hull and on both sides add a set of bypass valves. As simple as three ball valve one on each hydraulic line to the ram and a cross over between them. That way the ram not being used the fluid will flow through the ram in restricted and ready to go. If one ram fails close the valves and open the bypass and do the opposite on the other side then you still have steering while you fix the other ram.

Just a few quick thoughts about your backup system(s)... You just went through the gentile reminder version of a double fault / failure event. Problem situations have a way of escalating. The next time you might have to rig it you may be at sea. In, less than ideal conditions. At night. Add an extra block and at least 2 extra shackles for things that get lost irretrievably overboard. You don't want to be scrambling around for parts when you drop something. Also add a safety lanyard for your glasses to the bag. And maybe even a written reminder about safety harness / flotation / PPE. (A ship that cannot control its course cannot recover a man overboard. As I think about it people even manage to fall overboard tied to a dock.) Would you want to leave Linh & Emma dealing with that?
@mandmmilling3716

Have you thought about just putting some by-passes on your hydraulic ram so you can isolate it? If you did that, you would only need to move 3 quarter turn gate valves to by-pass you steering ram instead of removing the nut. It would be way faster in an emergency situation.

As soon as I started watching this episode and listened to Linh's intro, I noticed right away the cause of all of this bad luck .....BANANAS!!!! Seriously though, you can't foresee everything that will happen while you are out there. What really matters at the end of the day is how you dealt with the problem at hand and how you learned from it. I do have one comment about the tie bar, is it solid or hollow? Either way, the holes that are left in the rod may introduce a potential point of failure, would you not consider bringing it to a welder and have a sleeve welded over that area with your eye welded into that sleeve? Just a thought.....Keep up the work and keep on cruising, we love watching your videos and really love that you are out there doing what we plan to be doing in about two years time once our dirt home is sold. in regards to having a spare hydro stearing cylinder, even a new one after 1 year can fail. So not having a spear was ok by me. You were better off spending the money and time rigging for the manual system. Great job.

Teal. Sorry but I would have loved to see your emergency steering work. Please incorporate it in a future video. And about carrying spares. You can not carry spares for everything. You would become a verry heavy catamaran. Like they say: Sh!t happens.

Think about what it will take to install the backup rig in even a 5' sea state. You could have the backup steering system installed but free-running, as in continuous loop. What you've built is a pull-pull system, so putting a wheel in the middle up top you could turn things quite nicely, have the whole thing rigged up, then pop the wheel on when you need it. You have a backup cylinder, so that won't fail again, ;) but you could have a split hose, and all the fluid leak out, then what? Do you have a linear hydraulic ram that runs your autopilot? That would be #1 backup for a failed steering.

With that purchase system, maybe some kinda windvane set up as well. I think one can do it on a cat.

Hi Linh. I went back in time to look at some of the older Historical Records for SV Basic. I tried to leave subtle hints when Teal was installing the old hydraulic Ram. I suppose telling Teal this might be a good time to replace that hydraulic Ram was too subtle. That......or Teal is such a straight arrow guy he did not want to violate the " Temporal Prime Directive " and take my advice.

Most boats have an emergency tiller arms that you drop thru the deck onto a socket on the top of the rudder posts

You didn't loose on the gamble, you just deferred the replacement 2 years, which probably made the big outlay easier to manage financially, that sounds like a win to me, probably wouldn't have hurt to do the seals 2 years ago, but as they say hindsight..... As for your best mechanic, she's kinda young, but that could be useful in years to come, hopefully she sticks around.

I'm still not quite sure how the new emergency steering system works. I saw what you did on the transom but how did the old one connect to your helm and how does the new one connect to your helm. I guess the new system won't connect to your helm but instead, connect to a tiller that you haven't installed yet. I guess I'll have to wait and see but you left out several key details in this video that make me wonder how it works or did work.

Teal, You can get anything you need for far less than OEM prices from SurplusCenter.com. I rebuilt a 2 cylinder system for 1/3 the cost and that included shipping costs.

Hopefully it will be a long time before you need your emergency backup in a bag, but therein lies a problem. Will you remember how to rig it? Next time you rig it take some photos, make some prints and put them in the bag. The laws of failure state failure happens when you least need it to. Trying to remember how did I do this way back when is not fun!

If adding a tiller contraption you might as well manufacture it so an autopilot works on that.

This reminds me of the video on the channel Monday Never : Rescue at sea Mid-atlantic mayday. A family on a monohull lost their rudder mid atlantic, not able to reestablish steering they got picked up. They lost their boat and with it everything they had. Hilma sailing lost their rudder by a faulty compass light, a loose wire from that light got into contact through the metal compass column and steering cables with the rudder shaft, which corroded and the rudder broke clean off just under the hull. They got towed into harbour, making emergency rudders from cabinet doors. The boat turned wildly left/right around the keel without a rudder under tow. They got into the habour, but i guess with less cabinet doors than they had before. They repaired their boat and made a sturdy emergency rudder that is easy to deploy. Now i wonder, the emergency rudder system you build, can you mount it while in bad weather with waves? With the dinghy in calm water behind the boat as working platform it did look doable.

So rebuild the first one and keep it as a spare. Certain things you should always have as spares starters alternators injectors an injection pump belts bilge pumps fuses circuit breakers. Also a very complete set of tools and any manufacturer specific tools.
